May I suggest something else? Not exactly an icon representing the actual item but a symbol so we know the Pokemon holds an item. Less coding, not many new mini sprites, blah blah.

(about the mini symbols) I suggested this 1st and it didn't got much support so i changed the post....
I suggested to add a everstone and a pokeball. everstone cuz a lot pokemon hold it if you try to complete the dex or you don't want to evolve them etc and the pokeball for all other items..

I will add this suggestion again ^^

Support! I like BlueAbsol's idea more, a lot less to code and it's not necessary to know which item is holding, you can click the pokemon and know what item is.
