Jace Mawer (Nora)

"We're detectives, aren't we?" Nora grinned at her. "And what do we do as detectives, if not snoop?"

She tilted her head to the side. "Besides... isn't it interesting? Two human men, travelling alone to a city that's recently come under a string of violent crime? It's slightly curious, particularly considering those long sleeves of theirs. Seems convenient for covering up some dec caled (1) tattoos."

(1) Dec caled is an underground network of crime. Members are identified through swirling tattoos which depict stylised goats.

Adrik Volkov

Potential trigger warnings: Family problems, allusions to kidnapping, some uncomfy stuff in general. Take care of yourself :D.
---

Okay. I missed. Seriously, though, either way, this guy has got to built like a brick wall.

And apparently as dense as one too. He knew people were watching, everyone was getting concerned. So why wouldn't he just let Adrik go?

"Something wrong, kid?" A Kurai model stepped up. Her eyes were vast and empty, but as they settled on Aleks, something cold and hard seemed to solidify within them. "You know this guy?"

Adrik wasn't sure how to respond to that. He knew that Aleks would never hurt him. No matter how much distance had come between them, he would always believe that. But at the same time, it wasn't okay. Aleks kept ruffling his hair and joking around like nothing happened even though Adrik kept telling him to stop.

"Aleks," he said softly. "You're not my brother anymore. Stop acting like it. This isn't just another game. You can't keep pretending like we know each other, because we don't. I hate you. And when I tell you to stop touching me, you stop. I'm not a kid you can just pat on the head and-"

He sniffled, hating himself for the way his face felt wet. Why couldn't he just be mean and not care?

"It's fine," he told the woman weakly. He glanced back up at Aleksandr. "Aleks."

Niwa Atsushi

Niwa followed after them. He didn't look back until they were at the end of the street. The cat lurked in the window, eyes eerily fixated on him. The expression calm and peaceful, tail slowly curling around its paws.

That one, at the very least, was real.

Too real.

Gripping his messenger bag, unable to puzzle out the uneasiness which had suddenly gripped him, Niwa hurried to catch up with the others. And just before they turned the corner, he took one final look back and saw the cat was gone.

It was about time to head to the train station anyway. They might be able to take the buses in lieu of the north-bound train. This was probably for the best.

Jace Mawer (Nora)

She noticed Stella's eyes were moving just a bit too quickly. Hmm.

"Hey, SDC," she whispered. "You thinking what I'm thinking?"

Jace Mawer (Nora)

"Sweet." Nora grinned, planting the pair down. "Now... how about a ten? Got one of those?"

Across the train, a couple of people seemed to be getting pretty mad. Raising their voices, going through gestures faster than her dad could've gotten through a pack of cigarettes. And good gosh did that man love his cigarettes. The house always smelt like smoke. It permeated the lungs, became a smell you looked forward to after a long day at school.

(Don't think about that.)

"What do you think they're talking about?" she asked. "Y'think a divorce is coming?" She peered curiously at the pair. An older, balding man who kept wiping sweat off of his (endless) forehead. It was the other man, a younger man, who's voice was the loudest.

"You can't just say that!" the young man yelled, slamming his fist into the table with a bang. Suddenly, he glanced around himself, and every pair of eyes that had been fixed on him darted off, everyone re-engaging in newspapers and their own conversations.

Nora kept watching though. Curious, this young man. Wasn't he nervous, pawing at his collar and avoiding eye contact with the older man in front of him.

Adrik Volkov

This time, Adrik aimed right for the solar plexus. "Get off me!" he yelled, jamming it in with all his strength. "I don't want you touching me!"

Heads were popping up along the street. Unfamiliar faces staring at the scene.

Niwa Atsushi

"I think," Niwa said softly. "We should be leaving now."

"Oh, but don't you want to try our kitty cake? It's some of the best in town. Can't say anyone here could compete with ours."

The woman's smile was so fake. It made something very cold and hard settle in Niwa's chest. She, and her little android cats, could all go to hell. She wasn't to be trusted.

A meow came from across the room. It was the cat that had run away from him. The thing was slowly approaching, head low to the ground. Wisdom shone in its bright green eyes, some curious sort of strength in those long, feline limbs as it walked across the room with all the dignity of a-

No.

His jaw set.

"We should go," he said, firmly this time.

"Hmph." Andreja sniffed, but the dizziness was returning so maybe that was for the best, though she'd never tell AC that. "Eight glasses a day... are you a fish?"

Goodness, she really was just like Chizu.

Smoking can take twenty years off your life, Andreja!

Binge eating is dangerous. You need to spread your meals throughout the day!

Blah blah blah, take care of yourselffff.

She made a face. "We're not young for very long. Why not take advantage of it, is what I ask. And besides, I am not screen-addicted," she added, finally catching the snide comment. "I'll have you know I have plenty of other ways to slowly drag myself into the sweet embrace of death."

Jace Mawer (Nora)

"Huh." Okay. Wow. How was she supposed to unpack that... Actually, how to respond to that, was the real question. "Good job?" She gave her a thumbs up. "Very awesome. A pair of 9s. Now you just need a pair of 6s and you can properly annoy Narcisse."

But it seemed almost as if the girl wanted a serious game. And hey, she'd played along with Nora, anyway... so maybe it was only fair that Nora returned the favour.

With a swipe of her hand, she flicked her cards open into a fan and began studying them vigorously. A diamond there... a club right next to it, properly sorted in order from lowest to highest. She thumbed an ace of spades and allowed it to tip into her palm.

"How about an ace?" she asked. "Got any of those?"

She nearly made a face. Wow, that sounds... What am I, some eighteenth century cowboy hustling his first game of blackjack?

"Oh noooo, dehydration," Andreja grumbled. "C'mon, we're all out here thriving on our two hours of sleep and one can of Monster a day. Don't play like you're some great expert on taking care of yourself. You're Gen Z, y'don't get bragging rights..."

She blinked. The world seemed to be coming into focus again. But the annoyingness of hydrate girl remained.

"Hm. Wanna try letting me go?"

Oooo, apparently jokes didn't go over well with this girl. She looked madder than ever. Was it too late to back out of the world's most intense game of Go Fish?

"Hmm, an eight, eh?" Why was the girl looking so intensely at her? Was she the world champion of childrens' card games? Nora began to sweat, but continued smiling. "Nope! Go fish!"

"You're annoying," she mumbled, sticking out her tongue even though she wasn't quite sure if her eyes were focusing on AC. "Shut up and be a good coathanger. Me. I'm the coat."

Hmm, okay, she had maybe hit her head when she fell. That was kinda weird even for her.

"Where are we? You know?" Her head lolled to the side. She squinted at the other girl sideways and tried to make out her expression. Goodness, she looked like Chizu from this angle. All constipated and everything.

"Her eyes were like the sky, if the sky were made of sunsets and dreams." She said softly. "When she laughed, her head flew back and her laughter was like clouds floating up to heaven."

Adrik Volkov

Adrik flung his elbow into Aleks stomach with all the force he could muster. "Can't you take a hint?" he screamed into his face.

Breaking into a run, Adrik furiously wiped tears from his face. Now you've done it. Attacking your supervisor... a real detective on your first case? You'll be lucky to get fired with a note to the principal while they're at it.

Niwa Atsushi

"Haha... yeah." Niwa smiled awkwardly. She was weirdly familiar with the Volkov's kid. He didn't really mind, the Volkovs were an okay enough breed so... "Wanna hear about the case?"

Niwa started before she could say no.

"Okay, so basically, there's some serial jewelry store robber and he's like constantly hitting the banks around the north side of Trydanfaid. They have a list of suspects, but no solid evidence to take anyone in for an interrogation. So they got us and we're supposed to investigate on the side... 'they' being the police force, of course. And- and- I think we're supposed to recover some big name jewel that was heisted when it was being valued? I think anyway."

He bit his tongue, already chastising himself. Why would he just go and say all of that? This wasn't her case... and bringing up a "jewelry store" already disproved that stupid lie he'd made about it being some big case.

The jewel was some no name ruby that some rich person wanted to be made big. The whole investigation was probably more about bringing value to that useless hunk of stone.

And... He blinked. The cat was too close. It felt as though his leg were on fire. He pushed it away, and it butted its head against his hand, mewling. The nose was very cold, too cold, and suddenly something occurred to him. He looked at it very hard for a second and realised the whole thing was cold, except for those oddly overheated sides.

He yanked the cat into his lap and it went limp, meowing at him. Its eyes shone with innocence and light, kneading at his stomach and making a half hearted purr even as he took it by the ear and ripped the fur right off.

The fur came off beautifully, cleanly. Never attached properly, he supposed, because when the metal plate became exposed, then there were only a few fine traces of glue.

It continued staring up at him with those soulful eyes, making noises identical to that of any cat he'd heard before. Even with a furry cat hood dangling off a metal neck, that horrible wire face kept opening and closing its jaw. The ears moved mechanically, with the turning of gears behind the plastic which formed the bulk of its base.

He dropped it like a hot potato and it landed at his feet, quickly scurrying behind the android woman, who reached down and petted that mechanical abomination.

"Ah, that's a good kitty," she said affectionately to it. "She's a sweetie isn't it?" She looked up at him and smiled, horribly monstrously. "They're made to be the perfect companion. Though I suppose the design could use some work."

She laughed as if this whole thing was a joke. As if she weren't a liar and a cheat.

"Oh," was all he could think to say.

Andreja showed Coathanger her middle finger without looking at her. "You suck!" she yelled through the gross taste of her lunch re-emerging. "Go dig a hole and sit in it."

Sniffling, she wiped her face clean and crouched there for just a minute. She took in a deep breath and stood up and- oh-

She swayed from side to side, squeezing her eyes shut against the dizziness which threatened to overtake her.

God what was with this place? And why was no one affected like she was?

Niwa Atsushi

"Oh uh- hi!" Niwa's face flushed red. He never had any idea how to treat girls, especially ones like Lydia. Not like his sister, surely, but definitely not like his mom. And it didn't help that Lydia was pretty. Like really pretty.

The cat pressed closer to his leg. He fought the urge to kick it away. That wasn't good. That wasn't how you were supposed to treat cats.

He could still see the first one watching him from across the room. Its eyes glittered coldly, judgementally.

What do you know? he thought bitterly.

"Y-Yeah. She has a.. a lead on an important case! So she's helping us, you know?" He winked at the teenager frantically. Play along, he mouthed. "She's going to help us solve some big thievery thing! It's kinda scary, you know, but we'll do fine."

Adrik Volkov

Adrik frowned. "You're a senior Detective. You should try and be a bit more responsible, especially when you're mentoring two of your younger- oh, who am I kidding." He sighed, passing a hand over his face. "You'll never listen. There's no point."

He hurried his pace, because his eyes were feeling weirdly hot and maybe some space would help. Who knew.

You've never listened to me. Hell, who has?

Jace Mawer (Nora)

Ooo Andy's eyes, so fierce. Nora smiled at her, hoping to diffuse the tension. "A jack, you say? You're wondering whether or not I have a jack?"

She glanced at her hand.

A couple aces, a few number cards, and one face card. A beautiful, unfortunate jack. Hmm.

"Nope!" she chirped, despite sliding Andy the card. "Go fish!"

Nora observed Stella. She was always so careful to observe, to stay out of the conflict. Maybe it came with her history. Keep out of sight, blend in, don't cause trouble. Probably was wary of these crazy Detectives and their elaborate social constructs.

To fit in, she stayed out of it.

That was so unlike anything Nora had ever done. She never let anyone control her, never let the world pass her by for an instant. She seized every opportunity, pounced on every person who glanced her way, and took control of every situation.

Guess we're kind of opposites. Nora smiled to herself. Don't worry, SDC. I like you anyway. Opposites attract, you know? You can be the cool one.

The train is one hour from its destination.

"Chit?" She tilted her head to the side. "What's that? You can't just call me that and never elaborate..." But the girl wasn't looking at her. Not anyone, really.

Andreja frowned. The girl, in that brief moment, hadn't even taken a minute to look her over. Just a quick glance, a quick quip, and then off to more important people. As though Andreja were some mere insect, or a pebble to be briefly studied then chucked off for the next curious passersby.

I will not be ignored. Her jaw set. You've made an enemy, 'chit'.

"Ah, maybe I will." She smiled, noticing that Coathanger was looking at her now. Now that was a fun girl to play with. Andreja liked her! She was just so.... huffy, you know? It reminded her a bit of Chizu and how much that girl could yell when someone spilled just a few crumbs on her bed! Eventually, Andreja had just made it a habit to gobble down some saltines whenever Chizu left the room.

And how red Chi-Chi's face got! It kept swelling and getting redder and redder. The first time Andreja called her a rooster, she thought it might explode.

Chizu...

Huh. For some reason, Andreja was having a hard time remembering that red face.

Shaking off the uneasiness, she smiled at AC, "Ah, ah! Don't be ashamed of your height deficiency, it means nothing in comparison to the emotional neglect you must've suffered from your parents as a child. Naming you air conditioning! Tsk." She shook her head. "That name must've been hard to live with, but now you can use that childhood trauma to grow past your current defects. Not literal growing of course, but something close."

It was hard to take the Chizus of the world seriously. Everyone here was so stuck on those silly little things. Honestly, just enjoy life! We're stuck in some weird murder place, might as well make it worthwhile.

"A game?" Andreja pondered it for a second. Wow, these people needed therapy. "Anyone in the market for a shrink?" she asked. "I can hook you up."

"Humans are easier to kill."

"Wow. Not going to unpack that, I guess."

Oh, and there was the biblically accurate angel again! Clearly hitting on Meat Shield. Damn, could they play into his hero complex any more?

"Ooo Meat Shield is lamer than expected!" she said cheerfully, because clearly he needed to be brought down a peg. "Monarch of Death, ehh? I could've sworn I heard that somewhere. My Chemical Romance? Probably. I mean he seems like the kind of emo loser who'd try to plagiarize one of those 'death parade' songs."

Then she blinked. The world around her began to glitch and sway and suddenly she was in some sort of field.

Urp.

Her hand flew up to her mouth, but before she could stop herself she was falling to her knees. She threw up. She could admit that, unlike the rest of these stuck-ups.

"Whhha... thuuh... fu...." she moaned. Her head was still swirling and she squeezed her eyes shut against the piercing light. Swiping at her mouth with a trembling hand she waited for everything to stop spinning.

When she opened her eyes again, she noticed the village.

Her mouth opened slowly. "Oh," she muttered. "Well."

Not a dream then. This whole thing... the magic... the angel... The vomit and the teleportation and the wholeass freaking village proved it. She was really here. This wasn't some long, drawn out hallucination.

She keeled over and threw up again.

Majoree Sinclair

---
"The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn, the bird waits in the egg, and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities." -James Allen

"So that's it? You're finally done with us?"

Majoree jumped, her hand unconsciously tightening on the wire. All around her, the world was coming to life. Singing birds, the fluttering of insects... and her own heart, rapidly thumping in her chest

"Calm down, Chia," she muttered. "I haven't done anything yet."

"Was it something I said?" her sister inquired, stepping into Majoree's line of sight. Her hair, immacuately braided as always, rested against her red Reaping dress. Majoree tore her eyes away, anger, thick and choking rising up in her throat.

"No, nothing you said." On an afterthought, she added. "Don't be dumb, Chia. This isn't about you."

"What is it about, then?"

Majoree squeezed her eyes shut against the onslaught of images. A beautiful pink mouth moving, asking a question. It blurred and spun and became a forest scene, candied cherry blossom trees soaring into the sky and there was a boy now, smiling at her, his shirt splattered with something she'd rather not think about. His hand was held out, and as she stared into it, something began to form in that clammy palm, and suddenly the boy was gone... and she was kneeled over the ground, cradling a little white bundle of cloth. Her heart froze in her chest. Hands shaking she unraveled it, to reveal a bird, a little dove, its eyes closed, wire wrapped around the scarlet line in its throat. A perfect little bow.

The memories faded away, and her breathing steadied.

You're fine, she told herself. Just answer the question honestly.

Please.

"A dream," she said, finally turning to fully face Chia.

She was holding Majoree's coat and wearing runners without socks. In the distance, Majoree spied her fancy Mary Janes, bright red and abandoned on the forest floor. Chia was shaking all over and there were patches of sweat on her arms and face, but even her obvious exhaustion couldn't hide the anger that curled her shoulders forward.

She could see Chia's hands, shaking and clenched into fists.

"So that's it. You're abandoning us over one of your dreams."

Majoree flinched. Chia had always been the one to defend her whenever their mom started on Majoree and her "gift". She knew Chia didn't really believe her- for goodness sake's, who could?- but she seemed... angry. Really angry. More than last time. This was supposed to hurt.

And it did.

"I'm not abandoning you." She couldn't quite meet Chia in the eyes.

Chia snorted. "Of course you aren't." She pushed past her, Majoree stumbling out of her way, and came to a stop at the fence, staring up at it. "I just remembered," she said conversationally. "It's electrified at the top. I bet you didn't know that, did you? You wouldn't have known unless I told you."

Why was Chia looking for a fight? Majoree's brow furrowed as she stared at her sister- sneakers, new braids, red Reaping dress. She couldn't make out her expression from behind, but her stiffened shoulders told the story.

"It's only active in the evenings," Majoree murmured.

"Ah, you'd know. Been here a lot?" Chia apparently couldn't keep the loathing out of her voice for very long.

"Look, Chia, I don't think you understand why-"

"Oh, I understand just fine, Majoree." Chia spun to face her. There were tears on her face thst momentarily took Majoree's breath away. "I've spent years of my life defending you. When they say you're crazy, I'm the first one to say you're not. What have you done for me? Every week you run away and you expect us to..."

"Chia!" Majoree exclaimed as her sister's knees hit the forest floor. She ran up to her and tried to hug her, but Chia shoved her away.

"It's the Reaping," Chia whispered. "If you don't show... they'll know you're not here. They'll find you." She lifted her head, eyes red-rimmed, but fierce all the same. "Pick another day. Not today."

Oh, Chia. Majoree's heart broke. You really don't get it, do you? You always were the pragmatic one.

Gently, she tucked one of Chia's braids behind her ear, relieved her sister let her. It doesn't make sense to you... why today would be the day to run. It's never been about any of that for you.

"I can't do another Reaping, Chia," Majoree whispered, dropping down beside Chia and taking her hand. "Last night... I think that's what it was telling me."

"What the dream told you?" Chia asked bitterly.

Ignoring her, Majoree went on, "I saw a Reaping age boy and a dead bird. You know what birds mean to me, Chia. And I know that whoever that boy is... he's going to be drawn. And if he does get drawn, then I'll lose..." She hesitated, not sure what to say. "Birds."

"So you just don't want to see that boy?" Chia questioned.

"I... I guess so." That's close enough, I guess.

"Is he from our District?"

"That's not really relevant, Chia-" she began.

"No, listen to me." Chia turned to face her, eyes lighting up. "You don't have to watch the Reaping, Majoree." Chia spun her around and clasped her hands in hers. "That sounds okay, right? I'll just keep you away from the tv. You'll never even see if the boy gets drawn."

Majoree wasn't sure what to say to that. She just kept quiet as Chia rambled on.

"One more year. Just stay here for me, okay? It's not that long. We can figure out how to deal with your dreams. Sleeping pills or something."

"It's not that simple, Chia," Majoree whispered. But her voice waivered. And from the glint in Chia's eyes, she knew she'd won. "Just... don't let the bird die, okay?"

Now I sound crazy. Dream boys and dead birds.

But Chia, as always, took it in stride.

"No birds dying under my watch," Chia promised. She giggled a bit, clearly thinking the argument was over. Hopping to her feet, she strode over to Majoree and helped her up. "C'mon, we gotta get bad before mom throws a conniption fit."

"Yeah, sure."

Chia blinked, clearly surprised, but a grin spread over her face. "Geez, Majoree, you don't have to pretend to love her that much."

"Haha," Majoree said unenthusiastically.

Her sister threw back her head and laughed. After they left, Majoree trailed sullenly behind her. For just a moment, she glanced behind herself at the fence- the twisted metal fingers climbing up and up and up into the sky, gently brushing against the edges of a tree.

In her dreams, her hands had been made of the very same wire.

Her nails dug into her palms, biting deep. She focused on those little flickers of pain and tried to pretend like this was just another weekly attempt to leave the District.

No doubt Chia had thought it was, and for a moment so had Majoree.

But as she walked along, she spotted a little dove, high up in the tree. She smiled at it, gave a little wave. Its song floated through the air, dancing in tune with the wind and the leaves. The bird craned its head to the sky and sang its little heart out, wings fluttering, feet poised as though it were about to take flight.

A flicker of movement in the brush

No, she thought.

The cat's eyes glowed green.

Chia's hand tightened around hers.

The bird's dying shrieks followed them as they left the woods and emerged onto the path. They needed to follow it North, to get to the Town Square. Where the Reaping would soon begin. The shrieking behind them cut off abruptly, and Chia's grip loosened.

She smiled at Majoree and melodious birdsong filled the air once more.

Majoree smiled back, and felt fate's noose tighten around her throat. Today... she would see the Reaping boy.

"Oh, it's just where you belong." Andreja beamed, always happy to torture some poor, unfortunate soul. Honestly, she was doing her a favour! This girl and her angry quips and her coathanger shape was asking to be teased. The nail which stuck up got hammered down. Coathanger and Meat Shield seriously needed to learn some self-preservation, and Andreja could totally teach them.

Andreja was possibly deluding herself about the existence of her own survival instincts, but hey, she'd made it this far, so maybe delusion was the way to go.

"To clarify," she added, noticing the girl had turned her attention to another unimportant worm. "You're Coathanger, right? Because of the way your clothes fit. Since you're skinny. Snake skinny."

But oh- Coathanger wasn't listening to her. Andreja's eyes trailed curiously over the person she was talking to. Meat Shield's gang? That was weird.

The girl who was too familiar with Meat Shield didn't seem to like Air-Conditioner/Coathanger. Which was fair, Andreja was in full support of that. But Coathanger... Andreja felt a strange smile spread over her face. Oh, Coathanger liked someone.

"Air conditioning!" she crowed, sensing attention had strayed from her. "Ha! I like you. You have my permission to court Meat Shield. He could use someone like you. Maybe you'll finally be the one to pull that stick out of his ass."

Laughing to herself, feeling confident in her ability to piss people off, she turned to Coathanger's l'amour. "You wouldn't happen to know a girl named Chizu, would you?"

"Haha, she called you stupid!" Andreja crowed, pointing at Emo-boy. "Suck it, meat shield! Even Coathanger thinks you're lamer than me. You hear that?" Oh, and Angel Bitch! The girl had called her that, hadn't she?

What a cute nickname. And complimenting the high-pitchedness, the femnimity of her voice? Andreja almost had to wipe away a tear. Clearly, Coathanger was volunteering as the noble sacrifice.

And who was Andreja to deny her? This would be fun.

Cracking her knuckles, she turned to Coathanger with a grin. "So, darling~ which closet you thinking?"

"No," she told him, her tone dripping, sugary sweet, honeyed. But her words were poison. "I don't think I will, darling. This is your world, is it? You're the big shot here, all tough and strong and important. Well, unfortunately for you, I don't care. You know why? Because I've decided I'm going to live."

She met his eyes.

"You think you're special, since you get all this stuff. But I'll tell you one thing; being human is what makes me superior to you. And why, out of the two of us, I am getting out of here."

Almost in a friendly way, she reached out and touched his bat. "So, Angie and the meat shield. Has a nice ring to it, hey? If you ever feel up to telling me your name, we can consider adjusting it, but in the meantime, I think I'm going to try and enjoy it. Have fun, you know?"

I'll follow you around and in exchange you'll be my meat shield a while. Give it a go, I'm sure you'll have fun, and a cool story to share in the afterlife with Grams!"

After all, if he was too pig-headed to spill right now, then she could take her time with it. Whittle him down, day by day.

Kaya's face flashed in the back of her mind, and for a second it morphed into the unfamiliar one- the girl kneeling at her feet, begging for mercy.

Blinking, she found she'd just realised something strange.

The girl's eyes... were blue.
