Adrik VolkovAdrik slapped the hand away. "Don't touch me!" He yelled. Several heads turned in their direction. He could feel the curiosity in their gazes... and the judgement. "Please," he added through gritted teeth. Spinning on his heel, he headed towards the hallway where each office stood. He scanned each marker until he spotted Detective Laurens. The door was cold on his knuckles when he knocked. Shifting from foot to foot, he waited for an answer. [Read more] |

Adrik VolkovA crushing certainty weighed in on Adrik. He wasn't sure how, but all of a sudden he just knew that Aleks was behind this. Somehow that b*stard had made this happen. There was no way to know how- some strings pulled behind the scenes, a favour turned in, or a threat in the form of a little card under someone's office door. But there was no way this was a coincidence. Out of every detective in the agency, little Adrik Volkov gets stuck with the one person he has baggage with? No, life just didn't work like that. Adrik understood the power of a fat wallet. And from the smirk on that jerk's face, Adrik suspected that Aleks might know even better than he did. Uuuugggghh that smug b*stard. Adrik just wanted to sock him in the mouth. [Read more] |

Adrik VolkovCan't he take a hint? Adrik almost wept for joy when he spotted the crowds around that posted paper. He pushed through and made it to the front. Smiling, he adjusted his glasses and- His smile dropped. Aleksandr Konstantin, Sawyer Laurens, Adrik Volkov. He had no idea who that Sawyer Laurens might be, but the rest seemed pretty clear. Basically, he was screwed. Completely and utterly. 100 flipping percent- Screwed. He sighed internally. Andreja Buivis"No, no," she laughed. "You misunderstand. He was a divorced man, right? When he got the divorce, he had something on her... so he got a major claim out of the settlement." Therefore... "He was having an affair and the woman he had it with stays here, out of sight. She stole his ring and took off. He had to report the theft- it's a famous piece, y'know? People'd be asking after it. He cleaned the whole place up, tried to make it look like a plain old bachelor pad... but you know." She grinned. "He was rich. And rich people don't fix their own caulking." Niwa AtsushiThe place was crowded by the time they got there. Niwa looked around, taking note of all the new faces and storing their features in the back of his mind for analysis later. So many kids here... barely in their teens. A pang of loss echoed deep in the chambers of his heart. Looking in there, he could still remember his own teenagehood. Keiki. They were still here, weren't they? Huh. The room was noisy, and he suspected it might be overwhelming for Eloi. "Want to wait in the hall?" He offered. "I can find your assignment for you. It's no trouble." [Read more] |

Adrik VolkovAleks. It's him. It's big brother. "Charmed," he replied coldly. So this is your game then, huh? Well sure, I'll play. Whatever pleases you, "Konstantin." "I really should be going then. I don't want to mess up on my first day of the job." He couldn't keep his eyes from darting to Iliya when he said it. With a polite nod, he ducked underneath Aleks' arm and speed walked to the lounge, doing his very best to keep his eyes straight ahead and to pretend that they weren't behind him. Nope. Nothing to see here. No siree. [Read more] |

Adrik VolkovAleks? Adrik's heart seized. Oh god... oh god... That could not be good. Hadn't he spent the past year doing everything he could to get away from the Volkovs? Enrolling in a private academy, taking on an internship in a different city, quick skims over the website for any "V"s? Yet it hadn't been enough. Even now, staring into Iliya's stupid smiling face, Adrik felt a wave of anger wash over him... and loneliness. And self pity. And inferiority- worth nothing compared to his stupid cousins with their stupid sholarships and their stupid degrees and their stupid popularity. "I guess we should find our assignments for the day." He wrapped the ends of his scarf around his hand and squeezed hard. "Not much good standing around here, huh?" [Read more] |

Jace Mawer (NORA)"It's nice to meet someone who fancies the finer things in life." Nora smiled at them. Puns are simply darling. "I'm afraid I must be off to the Inves-tea-gative Department to pick up my assignment for today... but perhaps you could walk with me?" Niwa Atsushi"Yeah, friends. If you have any Spider-Man..." Niwa's brain rebooted itself. "Wait, actually. We seriously gotta get to work. The assignments are probably already up, and we won't have time for paperwork by now." Damn. Nerding out had its downsides sometimes. Andreja Buivis"Of course you didn't. You are but a simple detective, and such things are out of your hands, dear Sawyer." Andreja offered them a grin. "As the great and renowned Head Detective Melagis, I order you to not question anything from now on, because it will confuse your very adorable little head." She reached out and gave it a few pats for good measure before retracting her hand. "Anyway... the case." The ruby ring, huh... Andreja recognised it. The story'd been going around for months. As her eyes trailed over the footprints in the bathroom, they landed on a detail in the corner. "Huh," she mused. "He was a wealthy man, wasn't he? Recently divorced, got most of the money in the settlement..." So why was the caulking...? A smile slowly spread over her face. "The thief," she said slowly. "Is the woman he housed here." Adrik Volkov"Two years, six months," Adrik replied automatically, then winced. Ugh, it sounds like I was counting down the days. Changing the subject, he said, "A-Anyway... what are you doing here? I thought you were going off to that university, whatchamacallit... Cub... Clwb Ymladd?" Tyler wanted to go there too. He shook his head. It was a stupid thought. None of that mattered anymore. But he couldn't help but cling to it all the same. Narcisse Michon"Andrael," he greeted coldly. Still can't refer to me by title, I see. I might as well return the favour. "I appreciate the concern, but like everyone else, you can head down to the Investigative Department and await your assignment." At least she was professional. He did his best to treat her cordially, but something about her set his teeth on edge. Her hair, maybe. Or possibly just the way her eyes fixed on a person and in just a moment, seemed to see right through them down to the marrow of their bones. A true profile analyst. She really was good at her job. He might've liked her for it- if it wasn't so unnerving. He vowed to get an empathy test done on this girl, ASAP. Screw stereotypes, this whole thing was just... Breathing out, he allowed a cold smile to settle on his lips. "If no one else would like to make an impromptu entrance, this meeting is officially adjourned. Miss Moreau, please meet me in my office. Third door down the hall." Jace Mawer (NORA)"You are very crea-tea-ve. Your puns are quali-tea. Tea-hee." She laughed. "I can keep going on all day! This kind of thing is my cup of tea!" Nora was never one to pass up a challenge, after all. And this was one she would win. Niwa Atsushi"Someone else?" Niwa tipped his head to the side. "No, Eloi. Androids aren't like that. Nobody'd help anyone if there wasn't to, at least in their twisted, broken world. It's a human trait, empathy. Only humans have it and we're almost dead now." He shot Eloi a smile. "A-Another thing though... we're also able to enjoy superhero comics! And read and discuss them with our friends!" Friends... was that too soon? No, Eloi wanted friends. He was desperate for them. Niwa was glad to be his first. Andreja Buivis"Naw, that's not me don't worry. Andreja's probably someone else." Andreja shrugged. "Actually, I'm a Head Detective. Didn't you hear? They promoted a child genius. Me!" She tilted her head to the side, grinning so hard she knew her cheeks would feel it later. "You're lucky to be getting my guidance on this super awesome case, because my guidance is also super awesome. Just lock the door to keep out all the crazies and we can get started! No hassle no problemo!" Adrik VolkovAdrik hovered outside the office tacked with Jace Mawer's name. She'd offered to help him... but he wasn't sure how far that went. Or how much he'd owe her in return. He bit his lip, torn between rapping on the door or running away and looking even more like a maniac for it. God, why had he just stood here for ten minutes? He either would go in or he wouldn't. Why couldn't he just make a decision for himself? Just make a fist, put it to the door and- “…Adrik?" No... Not that voice! Not here! "Iliya." The name was just a breath, faint and whispery on his lips. He cleared his throat and started again. "Iliya. Funny seeing you here." There was a bitter note to the words that he couldn't quite hold back. He had no reason to be angry with Iliya, but... all the same... He closed his eyes and breathed in and out. You're okay. Just stay calm. Don't let him get to you. [Read more] |

Narcisse Michon"Yes, I would. I'll be alright on my own, but thank you for offering, Michon." Oh. That was... yes. He supposed that was too bad. Hopefully she would be fine on her own. Cases like that could be dangerous. "I suppose we can adjourn this meeting, then." Niwa Atsushi"Thanks Eloi..." Niwa allowed Eloi to pull him up and set him against the wall. Wow, that Andreja girl could tackle. She should honestly try out for rugby. "You were saying something about... comic books?" Andreja Buivis"Ooo, what kinda case?" She asked curiously, pausing in the spinning chair. "Cool one? Or lame one?" Jace Mawer (NORA)"A beautiful day, huh...?" She stared ZhaoXi down, putting death into her gaze... then grinned. "I can tea that. Even the skies are teaming with life today. with You'll have to teach me how to enjoy such a tea-riffic day such as this one... teaday." [Read more] |

Narcisse Michon"Thank you." He nodded at the janitor. It was frustrating, a little- not knowing who the man was despite, or perhaps especially because of the familiarity of that face. As the man left, Narcisse caught a glimpse of that flaming red hair. Rain was crashing down around him. A blurred face mouthed words he could barely make out. In the distance a train roared, drowning out the noise. He blinked, and suddenly he was back in his body and the door was closed- the stranger(?) gone. “I see. Hm, this one shouldn’t be too difficult. I see what you mean, though… it is a little more complex. I should be able to figure it out…" "Would you like to take it on?" He offered. "I can always help if you need some assistance." But deep in his heart, he longed to stay in the office today. Funny, usually he'd take any excuse to get some fresh air. But today he wanted to track down that man. Ask him a few questions. Piece together where he'd come from, where he was going- and how he knew Narcisse. Foolish, he knew. But the impulse was still there. To throw open the door and chase him down. Niwa AtsushiRelated? Niwa stored that knowledge away for later. "O-Okay." He smiled at Eloi. "I guess even if we've been abandoned... we've still got each other, huh?" It's now or never... Niwa... GO FOR IT! "Or so was said in Spiderman 7, by Uncle Ben's clone from dimension X..." He eyed him hopefully. Andreja Buivis"Boriiiiiing~!" She called over her shoulder. "Try and catch me!" She burst into the investigative department and nearly mowed over Detective Atsushi who yelped and dove to the ground. Swerving sharply to the left, she broke into Detective Laurens cubicle and immediately stole their chair and three sticks of bubblegum. Spinning around in it- a spinny chair! what a wonderful thing to waste the budget on!- she smacked a mouthful of delicious candy. They always had the best stuff in here. Jace Mawer (NORA)"Oh? Are you lost?" Nora had been watching the little analyst for a while. It was curious, the way some of these people treated this place and their roles here. Truly, they had no ambition. She admired that! Really she did. [Read more] |

Narcisse Michon"Custodian!" he called. "Wait." He paused a moment, sorting out everything in his head. Who was this man? Why was he so familiar? Why was every bone in Narcisse's body telling him not to let him go? "Thank you," he said finally. "It is... appreciated." There was something else... something- "Could you post these, please?" He gestured towards the assignments. "Just down in the investigative department." [Read more] |

Andreja Buivis"'Old man', huh? Did no one ever teach you to respect your elders?" Laurence paused briefly. Some strange emotions seemed to be fighting for control over his face. It was such a weird thing to look at that what he'd just said took a moment to sink in. Was that a joke? Walty has a sense of humour after all?! And a half decent one too?! Andreja decided nope and put that thought on the backburner for later. Just remember the Buivis family motto. "Sweep it under the rug, it's probably fine." "Huh. Makes sense, that he'd find himself working here. Probably trying to live up to his family legacy, I suppose." "Family legacy?" She broke out into giggles, then cut off abruptly. Staring him down, she enunciated very carefully, very clearly, "Sweetheart, there ain't any legacy left for anyone here. This place is the end of the road. For all of us." Then she twisted her expression back to her usual cheerful grin. "Best you can hope for is amazing friends like me! Your experience so far has been pretty sweet, I'd say!" "You... consider me-" Hm? She tilted her head to the side. Laurence shook his head at her and she pouted in return. "Andreja Buivis, with all due respect, which is none, you were making fun of my fellow intern and beating me into the ground!" "Beating you into the ground?" she teased. "Can't you just do it simple and say that I kicked your ass? No shame in being weak as hell if you're next to Angie." She reached out and patted him on the head. "Come on, smile for me!" She poked his cheek, then brought her hand back to her side. "Or just be like that. Sour-puss." Or... yeah! Work worked! "Let's go!" she cheered. Snatching up his hat, she took off down the hall. "Can't catch me, suckah!" Niwa AtsushiOh, good! Laughs! He was making progress. "I'm, uh, Iliya Volkov. It's nice to meet you, sir." Iliya bowed slightly. The way his face moved... Niwa took a moment to admire the nervous twists and turns of his features. He must be nervous. That was what people did when they were nervous. Iliya must want to impress his senior... or something. Wow, that's a first. Maybe he still thinks I'm competent. He'll learn soon enough. "Would you happen to know where i can find Aleksandr V- Konstantin?" "Detective Konstantin?" He echoed. "Oh- oh yeah. Probably in his office. Which is just down from my new one which is..." He spun on his heel. "Uh... right next to us." Despite the way I was running down this hallway like a maniac. "Want me to introduce you two?" "N-Niwa! There you are! I-" Oh! Eloi! Niwa turned around to face him. "Oh... I... um... sorry. Was I- interrupting something? I can leave... if- if you need me to. Sorry." "No, no it's okay! We're just about ready to head into the office now. You can come with us, if you want." Narcisse MichonThe door creaked open once more. Was everyone determined to invade his personal space today? Narcisse turned around, ready to give a young intern a tongue lashing, but then he saw- he recognised- He inhaled sharply. Why did he recognise him? Who was this? "I'm going on break, anyone... Anyone need drinks?" The redhead seemed totally oblivious to Narcisse's intense stare. He wasn't young- probably around Narcisse's age, if he had to guess, so definitely not an intern. A janitor? He studied the man's uniform and came to the conclusion that yes, this must be one of the new custodian hires. "I- I suppose if you're offering..." Narcisse murmured. "Tea, perhaps?" He'd already had his black tea this morning, but with the way his brain seemed to be wading through mollasses today, he suspected October 7th might be a hard one for him. More caffeine would definitely be welcome. "Hmm... The murder's a bit of an oddball. Aside from that it all seems pretty standard. Nothing too much to handle." "The younger detectives, then." He nodded his thanks and pushed the blue folders off to the side, where he'd assign them later. "Hmm. May I see? Perhaps I can be of some assistance." "Of course." He passed the red case file down her way. "I'm afraid it's a little... gory." [Read more] |

Niwa Atsushi"Oh uh... yeah. I don't think I know who I was talking about either, to be fully honest." Niwa offered an apologetic smile and a half-hearted wince. "...Anyway. Are you new to the agency? Niwa Atsushi"Oh no!" Niwa waved his hands frantically. "Not at all! I was just best friends with a Volkov... yeah." He nodded confidentally to himself. "And you look just like him." Niwa attempted a smile. Oh geez... this was awkward. "I'm glad it's okay. I would've had to buy you a new one if it broke- and I'm well- I'm also kinda broke. Or my wallet is, haha." Niwa Atsushi"No, no it was my fault. Is your..." he faltered. "Is your camera okay? I didn't mean to run into you, I promise." Was this... one of the interns? Niwa couldn't place the face which was strange. He could place every face. Perhaps... he studied the lines and curviture of the internee's features. The way he moved... that jawline... the shape of his nose... "Are you a Volkov?" he asked, then ducked his head."Wait! Sorry! Maybe that was a weird question. Really really sorry." [Read more] |

Andreja Buivis"Yeah, yeah, sure old man. Whatever you want." She rolled her eyes. "Thought you'd be interested, that's all. You know that detective guy? The one who's always jumping and whimpering every time Michon walks by? He's ol' Atsushi's grandson. Nepotism at its finest." She grinned. "Hassling young interns? What a way to put it. I was just giving my new friend Walty a little lesson 'bout loosening up a bit, you know? Looks like he didn't take it to heart after all." Potential? She took in a deep breath, letting the irritation ebb away. This was fun. She was having fun. "Ugh, if you must." She rolled her eyes. "You're such a stick in the mud. You'll get the credits either way, and you'll be outta here in a year. Calm down already.” But she followed after him, grumbling some kind of nonsense- she wasn't sure exactly what- under her breath. Her eyes drifted about the walls, looking for something to fixate on. A month of janitor's work? A month stuck with this guy? Narcisse Michon"Glad to hear it. Any thoughts on the rest?" He nodded to the last three cases. Two blue and that second red. Niwa Atsushi"Oh god!" He panicked. "I'm late! I'm late! I'm late!" Niwa raced through the hallways, desperately darting down them at random, searching for his little station. Where was it??? How was he lost already???? He'd been here years! So what if he'd been transferred, normal humans should be able to find- BANG! He ran face first into someone, barely spotting a camera flying through the air before he landed on his rump. "A-Ah!" Narcisse MichonHe continued watching Buraddo, even as he scribbled down a few names on an orange case, not really paying attention. Aleksandr Konstantin, Sawyer Laurens, Adrik Volkov. Orange cases usually weren't too hard. They were suicide cases- that were reported on years later (usually by a relative) as "murder". It was fairly common for stuff like that to come in. When people were grieving, they looked for anyone to blame. He was confident in Detective Konstantin to treat this case respectfully and... Huh. He briefly reconsidered his choice, then shrugged. Ah, to hell with it. This wouldn't be the first time his more "eccentric" employees earned them a scathing bit in the paper. Their reputation was in the mud anyway- wasn't much further they could drag it. Slam! He nearly jumped. Oh- there was Laurier. Perfectly on time, down to the minute, as was to be expected. Narcisse hid his smile and offered her a nod. "Welcome back. How was your night, Laurier?" Then... "Allo?" His head snapped over his shoulder and he turned to stare at... a young woman? Ah. "Hello, informant," he greeted. It could be no one else. Only the eccentric (person? People? Random organisation dedicated to the glory of high heels?) who called themselves the understudies of Clockwork Detective Agency's Oracle would have the gall to break into the Conference Room... and before hours too. "To what might I owe the pleasure?" Andreja Buivis"I'm eighteen, babe. How about you?" She grinned. "Lemme guess. You're 35, coming back to this Agency after you flunked outta your philosophy course at Big Shot University." Andreja laughed a little to herself. Who was he trying to impress? Her? She figured he'd be done with that bit by now. Maybe he needed another beat down like yesterday in order to finally learn- no one cared here. Either you could do it or you couldn't, and that was all that mattered. "Yeah I've worked here a while. Been here too long, if you know what I mean." She gestured to a collage of... weird sh*t on the wall. "Did you ever read about Kubo Atsushi?" She grinned. "Founder of the institute. All that stuff? It's on him." [Read more] |

Andreja Buivis"Alrighty, sweet cheeks. Here we are. Ready for your first big day on the big kids' side of the playground?" Andreja grinned at Laurence. "Don't worry... you'll be fine. You've got Angie after all." She laughed, flipping her hair. Putting her hands behind her head, she glanced back at him. "So, what'dya know about this place?" Narcisse MichonNarcisse slipped inside the conference room, and began sorting through the papers that the secretaries had prepared for him. Here it was. Cases. He grimaced. The usual array, he suspected. Small time thieves, kids with a bit too much money looking for attention... The blue page markers indicating a case of theft appeared predominant this morning. What a shame, a tough one might be a chance for him to get out of this place, at least for a while. But as he sorted through the files, he noticed a few red ones. Those were dangerous. He moved the blue to the side and began examining the red. Right there at the top- Murder in big bold letters and a caption. Y Rhoddwr. Ah. A murder in that city? You didn't see that every day. And for them to outsource it to a little agency in Trydanfaid... He had to admit he was intrigued. He put it off to the side and began filing through the rest, eager to get back to the more interesting cases. Small time thievery... He thought for a minute, and then wrote down the assignment. Niwa Atsushi, Cassidy Louvin, Iliya Orlov Volkov. If there were any last bits of detective blood in that little Atsushi's veins, this should be no challenge. It'd be the boy's first real task- leading a couple of freshies through a simple purse snatcher's case would be a good opportunity for him to improve his standing in the organisation. Plus, he was intrigued by some of the names on there. The Volkovs... What business did old Volkov have sending his kid here? It was tempting to put his own name on there, or at least Nora's- He made a couple notes for his secretary, and assigned their profiler as Lydia Satou. There, simple enough. A break in. Jing Yu, Cali Mabey, Andreja Buivis, and Laurence Walton. Relatively safe case, there wasn't really any kind of danger for the kids. Would probably be good experience, and maybe an eye-opener for the Buivis kid. She didn't belong here, and he wanted to make sure she knew it. Satou could profile for them as well. Next on the list... Ah, a red one. Somebody pissed off someone important, he thought, narrowing his eyes at the graphic images. Stella De Caelo, Jace Mawer, ... His hand hovered over the paper, wondering if he should put his own name down. He was tempted. But... "Buraddo, would you look this over? I think you might be suited for it." He pushed it towards their end of the table. [Read more] |
