"I- no, actually," Amane said, with a shaky laugh. "It's actually that something's right for once," he finished, blinking a bit to try and reorient his mind. "Sorry- I just- you gave me a bit of a shock there, by actually agreeing to go with me." And then it really hit him. "YOU'RE GOING WITH ME?!" Amane found himself laughing, smiling like he hadn't in years. Forgetting all the rules about social etiquette and what not to do and what was appropriate, he threw himself into a tight hug with Ophelia, because finally, FINALLY, someone didn't hate him or think he was annoying or a waste of space or a toy for people to play with. And she was going to go with him!

"Oh!" Tsukasa's smile brightened, and he nodded. "I get it. I like watching people, too. People do very interesting things sometimes. As long as they aren't boring anyways. Oh, I think you're interesting, too," he added nonchalantly, thoroughly enjoying his choice to talk to her already. Finally, someone who might actually be exciting to be friends with! He hoped she'd be in Slytherin, but it didn't really matter; he, unlike some of his stuffy fellow Slytherins, had no problems talking to people in other houses. "Most people deny it if they're staring at me. You didn't. I like that," Tsukasa said, rocking back slightly on his feet. "I'm Tsukasa Yugi. I'm in Slytherin. A fourth year. My twin brother, Amane, is in Ravenclaw."

"I- Wh- R- Y-" Amane's brain had broken, a little bit, he thought through a haze. She was agreeing? To go to the colonies with him? That...was not what he had expected. In the slightest. At all. All he could do was stand there, holding Ophelia's hand, with a dumbfounded expression on his face. Despite everything he'd just said and all he'd believed about the girl, he hadn't actually expected her to go along. To want to go along. He'd thought that it would be just as it always had been - another situation where he was eventually left to himself again. Amane's brain was broken a lot.

Tsukasa was trying VERY HARD to do what he was supposed to be doing. Instead of jumping up and asking the first-year girl who was staring at him a hundred million questions. She was the same girl that he'd noticed in Madame Malkins, the girl that Amane didn't recognize. His brother had been right, he realized with a proud glow. Amane was so good at understanding people without even knowing them. Tsukasa, on the other hand, liked to observe and experiment to see what a person was like; that's how he got to know them. It wouldn't be awful to just ask one or two questions before the Sorting, right? He tried to imagine Amane's voice. Fine, fine, just sit back down when it starts, his brother said in his head, and Tsukasa bounced right on up.

He tapped the girl on the shoulder as he approached. "Hello," he said, eyes wide with curiosity and a broad smile on his face. "You were staring at me. How come?" Tsukasa tilted his head to the side, showing absolutely no signs of being weirded out or otherwise annoyed by the strange girl's behavior.

Amane raised an eyebrow. "What, you think I'd just drag you along and then dump you off at the shore?" He gave Ophelia's hand a squeeze. "I do actually have a small plan for staying in the colonies. I have a friend - an old teacher of mine - who lives in New York, who's offered to help support me and anyone I bring along. If you attend school, you won't have to worry about room and board, at least at first." Amane smiled. "Trust me, I...I know how hard it is to leave behind the people who took you in, even if they're awful. But that's just it - they're awful! It should have been a given to take you in and care for you, not something they can hold over your head like they're a saint for doing it." He sighed, trying to forget about the people in his life who he'd come to that revelation about. It was crazy to think that so many years later, he'd be saying these things to someone else. Amane turned so that Ophelia and he were face to face. "What do you mean, she's all you've got? You have me now, don't you? I know we just met," he said, shaking his head lightly. He was crazy to think that she'd have gone along with this. "I know. It's ridiculous. But just so you know, I'll support you. Whether you come with me or not. I promise."

It had been a long, long day. After the previous day's antics (which had been highlighted by the fact that Fortescue had donuts for them), followed by the bustle of packing, walking, taking the Underground, and then arriving at Platform 9 3/4, Amane was absolutely exhausted. Tsukasa, of course, was as energetic as ever. "C'mon, come onnn, we have to get a compartment before everyone takes them!" Amane just sighed, knowing the sooner they found a seat, the sooner he could take a nap. Settling into a section near the back of the train, Tsukasa shut the door and flopped down on the seat opposite his brother. The ride itself was mostly uneventful for the two, save for an episode where a cat was flying around the cabins, causing chaos (Tsukasa was laughing his head off and even Amane found it pretty funny). Changing into their sort-of green, sort-of-blue robes, the two found themselves a carriage. While in past years they'd visit with friends on the train, the brothers always made sure to ride the carriages alone, ever since second year when they'd discovered what pulled the carriages. Solemn for once, Tsukasa gave the thestrals a stroke, and Amane placed a gentle hand on his brother's shoulder. It was exciting, all those years ago - invisible horses, only seen by some?! - only to understand soon after that the horses could only be seen by those who had experienced, understood, and accepted death.

The rides on the carriages were silent after that, the brothers sitting close, arms linked and faces serious. Even so, nothing could tamper the overwhelmingly beautiful sight of Hogwarts - the only real home the boys ever knew. It was magnificent. Gigantic stone turrets towered over the Forbidden Forest, the glow of arched windows casting a soft yellow light across the lake, where hundreds of boats magically drifted towards the castle gates. Amane and Tsukasa dismounted their carriage, giving the thestrals a last pat before racing excitedly into the hall, where hundreds of students were already milling, greeting old friends and choosing their seats for the Sorting. It was both the best time of year, arriving at the start of another incredible time at the best school of magic in the world, but also the worst. Tsukasa pulled Amane into one of his squeeze-the-life-out-of-you hugs, burying his face in his brother's shoulder.

"Tsukasa," Amane said, feigning exasperation. Really though, he was just as sad to have to separate from his best friend and only brother. Though they often saw each other during their daily schedules and planned to eat together as much as they could, they were supposed to sit with their own houses during the Sorting Ceremony. "Remember, I'm totally going to have the most first-years, this time." Tsukasa let out a noise that was half-laugh, half-cry. "Noooo," came the muffled reply, "Slytherin's going to win." Laughing sofly, Amane gently hugged his brother back. "Come on, Tsukasa. It's just until tomorrow. I know it's hard but we don't have a choice." Quietly peeling Tsukasa off of him, he ruffled his hair. "See you later, okay?" Nodding sadly, Tsukasa turned and headed for the Slytherin table. Amane sighed. Why did the stupid hat have to put them in different houses? Deep down, he knew that they were best suited for Ravenclaw and Slytherin, respectively, but it still was hard not being able to stay with Tsukasa all the time like usual. As much as he looked out for and supported Tsukasa, his brother did the same for Amane. Shaking his head, Amane began to pick his way over to the Ravenclaw table. It wasn't like they had no other friends; it just wasn't the same.

Tsukasa plopped down near the front of the long Slytherin table, where he could get a good look at any new first years. It was awful, awful, awful not being with Amane, but it couldn't be helped. He glanced around. A couple of Head Boys were trying to control the chaos (a shame, really, Tsukasa loved chaos) and people were beginning to settle down. He wondered briefly what the Hat's speech would be about, this year. And what would his classes be like? Although he hated routine, magic itself was interesting enough that Tsukasa eagerly attended classes most of the time. And would there be anyone else interesting? He sure hoped so, or else he might get bored pretty quickly.

Amane sat himself close to the far end of the hall. From here, he was able to see the Sorting very well, and, as he liked doing, help welcome any new Ravenclaw first-years. It helped him take his mind off of things, and besides, it was a good way to meet new people (something he was trying to do more often). He looked around the room a little, catching glimpses of familiar faces. He didn't have that many friends that he was close to, but he did make a point to be friendly with those in his classes and his dorm. Waving at a couple of people, Amane wondered if he'd make any new friends this year; after all, he was taking new classes and starting his fourth year at Hogwarts! And preparing for the O.W.L.s next year, he remembered with a shudder.

"I guess so," Amane said, smiling softly at her. Silence - but a comfortable silence, for once - fell between them for a few minutes as they walked, the boy just taking in the sun and enjoying the company of the girl at his side. After a little while, he abruptly spoke up again. "Ophelia, come with me to the colonies!"

Amane gave Ophelia a more genuine smile. "Well, I'm honored that said human is me. And I'm not the best at making friends, either. I guess as far as two lonely, awkward people, we're doing alright," he said, laughing and shaking his head lightly with amusement. Honestly, though, the two of them seemed to click a lot better than most people he'd met, save for maybe one or two. It was really nice, actually, not to worry too much about having a simple conversation.

Relieved that for once Tsukasa hadn't dragged them into trouble with someone, Amane laughed, shaking Hurricane's hand lightly. "It's nice to meet you too." Tsukasa gave Ri a wave as well, earning him a sharp glare from Madame Malkin, who was starting to get very annoyed with fidgety children. "Tsukasa, please just hold still," Amane called over, not even needing to look behind him to know what the issue was. "If we finish early here, we can go get ice cream or something." The sudden silence told Amane that his brother was cooperating. He shook his head slightly. "It's like dragging a toddler around," he whispered to Ri.

Not missing a beat Tsukasa turned to the Hufflepuff girl with a smile. "Oh, I doubt that. You'd have to actually hit me with the spell first. Amane says I'm the best dueller in our year!" Amane sighed, rubbing his face with his palm. "Sorry. My brother has no - filter-" he said, nudging Tsukasa with each of the last three words. Tsukasa merely shrugged. "I'm just saying. And we're like, barely taller anyways. We gotta get our robes tailored too." With that, he tugged one of the robes free from his brother's arms and promptly stepped up to Madame Malkin, chattering eagerly about the color and the length that he wanted.

Amane sighed once more. "Really, I'm sorry. He doesn't mean to be rude or anything, he just...he's really blunt. We're Amane and Tsukasa Yugi. Fourth years. I'm in Ravenclaw, he's in Slytherin," he quickly introduced, gesturing to himself and his brother as he spoke. A slightly amused smile crossed his face. "He's uh, probably right that you would have a hard time getting a good spell in, though. I mean, I've lived with him my whole life and even I have trouble keeping an eye on him."

Two brown-haired, amber-eyed boys stood calmly by a brick wall. "Tsukasa," one sighed, gently lowering the other's outstretched arm. "I've told you a million times. It's this brick."

"Oh!" Tsukasa gave the wall a short rap, and it peeled away to reveal one of the boys' favorite places on earth: Diagon Alley. Even after four years of returning to this spot, the boys were no less excited than the first time they'd discovered it.

"So, where should we start?" Amane jostled a large trunk in his hands, reaching for a list. "We've already gotten all of our books, but we need some ingredients from the Apothecary and- woooOOOAAH!" Nearly dropping everything in his hands, Amane was yanked forward by his brother, who was already making a beeline for Madame Malkins. "O-or we could start there, I guess," Amane said, half-exasperated and half-amused by his brother's usual antics.

As they burst into the shop, Amane noticed with relief that it was still fairly empty, with only a few students here and there. "Amaneeee! Look!" Not a moment of rest, not with a twin brother. Tsukasa was pointing eagerly to a new color of fabric, somewhere between a deep blue and an emerald green. "We should get robes in this color! It's like, both Ravenclaw and Slytherin colors!" Tugging gently on his brother's arm, Tsukasa glanced all around the shop. "There's a Hufflepuff," he said, pointing over to a girl who was getting her robes tailored. "Look, she's pretty short, isn't she." Amane frowned and jabbed Tsukasa's side. "What? So are we!" Well, Amane thought wryly, I suppose that's true. We're going to have to get our robes hemmed pretty high up, too. Figuring it would be good to get a head start on that, Amane scooped up a pair of robes, walking over to stand quietly to the side of the Hufflepuff girl and wait his turn. She looked vaguely familiar, but Amane couldn't quite place it. He'd become familiar with many Slytherins, and Tsukasa with a handful of Ravenclaws, but beyond that, he didn't know many people outside of his house.

"Are we getting the cool fabric?" Tsukasa popped up behind his brother, resting his chin on Amane's shoulder. "Yes, yes, we're getting the cool fabric," Amane replied, rolling his eyes, but he still smiled nonetheless. "Yaaay!" Tsukasa cheered, squeezing his brother in a quick hug. "Oh, and she's a fifth year. Who's the girl that just came in, though?" Amane turned his head to see who his brother was talking about. A girl - she looked like a first year - was being dragged through the aisles by her mother, and she looked rather disinterested in the whole thing. "No idea," he said, shrugging. "I think she's a new student."

"Ah yes, shall I add that to my applications for school?" Spreading his arms out as if to frame the words, he continued in a dramatic voice. "Amane Piedmont: better conversationalist than Madame Ophelia's cat." Laughing, he leaned slightly against her as they walked. "They'll admit me on the spot." Shaking his head amusedly, he turned to Ophelia once more. "I think you're doing perfectly fine, if you ask me. For someone who talks to cats," Amane couldn't help but add with a smirk. It wasn't as though he'd had a lot of friends growing up, either, though. Not that he was antisocial, but he found it difficult to let people in. It was much easier with Ophelia, he found, for whatever reason, but he wasn't about to question it.

Amane tapped a finger on his chin, pantomiming deep thought. "We-ell, maybe because it's been a while since I've held a good conversation with someone my age," he began, not bothering to hide his grin now. "Like I said before - I think you're a person worth talking to." This was a much more comfortable subject of conversation; why talk about such dreary things on such a lovely day? It was a waste of sunshine, really. "I wouldn't protest too strongly to the notion that it's also because I think you're quite lovely." Amane gave her a cheeky wink, attitude growing more and more mischievous by the minute. "But an even better question is why ever you would go along with me. Certainly you wouldn't let yourself be dragged along by someone without good reason?"

Amane shrugged. "I'm not saying that they really have any reason to hunt me down. But at the same time..." He trailed off, looking for the right words. "It feels wrong not to help figure it out. I mean...whoever she was, she was still an innocent person who might've been murdered. Right there in front of me. Personally, I feel like I ought to do my best to help get to the bottom of everything - it's the least I can do." Returning to a more jovial air, Amane gave Ophelia a nudge. "I suppose I might also be staying in order to see you more, but that's just a theory. What do you think? Could that be a reason for my delay? You seemed a bit critical of my last theory, so I figured I'd ask your opinion on this one before calling it final." He smiled, trying not to laugh, hoping to lighten the mood away from the current situation. After all, it was exhausting being serious and gloomy all of the time.

Amane laughed, turning to face Ophelia. "What, so I was just going to hop on a ship like that and be off? Unfortunately, it's not that easy. First of all, it would be wildly suspicious of me to skip off to the colonies in the middle of such a serious investigation, so I'm stuck here until we figure all of this out, at least." Getting to the colonies might be his dream, but it wasn't going to be as simple as climbing aboard and sailing into the sunset. Not to mention, it would be wise to have a loose plan of what he was going to do once he actually got there. "It also happens to be expensive for a teen to book passage on a ship that is New York-bound. And there's also...well, a few things I need to figure out that I can't leave behind," Amane added, drifting into thought for a moment before tossing his head lightly. Not the time to worry about...that.

Name: Amane Yugi
Age: 14
Gender/Pronouns: He/Him
Personality: Amane is a rather playful boy with a tendency to tease others, although never in a mean way. He isn't what one might expect from a Ravenclaw; his grades are lacking, he's rarely seen doing homework, and he often skips classes if he's not feeling up to attending. On the other hand, it's clear that he belongs in Ravenclaw House - Amane is enraptured with astronomy, spending hours on end in the Astronomy Tower studying the stars. He can spend several sleepless nights conducting research. Not only that, but he is one who tends to enjoy helping other people with their passions, often found nose-deep in a book in search of an answer to a question from a younger student. Despite his often goofy antics, Amane can also be incredibly closed-off, almost never talking about himself, and at times he can be surprisingly shy. While he might not be a potions master or a history buff, Amane excels in defensive magic, particularly charms, and has a proficiency for nonverbal spells.
Appearance: Amane is a rather short (4'11") boy for his age, with choppy brown hair that hangs around eye level and cuts off at the base of his neck. He has warm brown eyes with flecks of amber that many have described as mesmerizing. Other than his Ravenclaw robes, which he generally wears to classes and on cold days, he wears typical muggle clothing. His favorite outfit is a light blue dress shirt and near-black uniform-style pants, along with fawn-brown dress shoes and a dark brown simple messenger bag. He often has ink stains on his hands from drawing star charts and such, and has slightly faded scars along his arms, left cheek, and lower legs.
Year: Fourth year
House: Ravenclaw
Wand: Hawthorn, Phoenix tail feather core. 12 inches, somewhat bendy. Descriptions of wand in spoiler. His wand's core has a tail feather from the same phoenix as his brother's wand has.

"The wandmaker Gregorovitch wrote that hawthorn ‘makes a strange, contradictory wand, as full of paradoxes as the tree that gave it birth, whose leaves and blossoms heal, and yet whose cut branches smell of death.’ While I disagree with many of Gregorovitch’s conclusions, we concur about hawthorn wands, which are complex and intriguing in their natures, just like the owners who best suit them. Hawthorn wands may be particularly suited to healing magic, but they are also adept at curses, and I have generally observed that the hawthorn wand seems most at home with a conflicted nature, or with a witch or wizard passing through a period of turmoil. Hawthorn is not easy to master, however, and I would only ever consider placing a hawthorn wand in the hands of a witch or wizard of proven talent, or the consequences might be dangerous. Hawthorn wands have a notable peculiarity: their spells can, when badly handled, backfire."

"This is the rarest core type. Phoenix feathers are capable of the greatest range of magic, though they may take longer than either unicorn or dragon cores to reveal this. They show the most initiative, sometimes acting of their own accord, a quality that many witches and wizards dislike.

Phoenix feather wands are always the pickiest when it comes to potential owners, for the creature from which they are taken is one of the most independent and detached in the world. These wands are the hardest to tame and to personalise, and their allegiance is usually hard won."

Patronus: Whale Shark (the shark from prophecy)
Others: Particularly adept at nonverbal spells
Quidditch Position: Chaser
Blood Status: Muggle-born
Extra: Has a twin brother in Slytherin. The two are very close, and are often seen together.

Name: Tsukasa Yugi
Age: 14
Gender/Pronouns: He/Him
Personality: Tsukasa, much like his twin brother, has a very playful nature, although his playfulness can sometimes result in unintentional harm to others when he takes his jokes too far. He is blunt and says what is on his mind, not particularly caring what others think about it. He can be a bit macabre, and has occasionally been described as a sadist, although that might be a bit of an exaggeration. In reality, he has a fascination with life and death, as well as how things work, whether he's taking apart a strange magical artifact or dissecting a bowtruckle. His brother serves to keep him in check, making sure that he becomes more aware of boundaries. Tsukasa is extremely attached to his twin, following him around not unlike a loyal puppy, which sometimes embarrasses Amane. Even so, it's clear that the brothers love each other, and seem to have been through a lot together. He is a jack of all trades when it comes to classes, although he doesn't seem to care much about grades. On the other hand, Tsukasa is someone you do NOT want to cross; he is a terrifyingly strong dueler, with lightning-speed reactions and deadly precision, especially as he is just as good at nonverbal spells as his brother.
Appearance: Tsukasa looks strikingly similar to his twin. With the same uneven, messy brown hair that falls across his face and mesmerizing brown-amber eyes, he and Amane are practically mirror images, even down to the scars on their faces (though Tsukasa's scar is on his right cheek, not his left.) Breaking a bit from the twin stereotype, he doesn't dress exactly like his brother, preferring more loose-fitting clothing. When not wearing his robes, he can be seen wearing long-sleeved dress shirts, more casual wizarding robes, and black dress shoes. If he feels like it though, he and Amane have several duplicate outfits, and they've pranked classmates and teachers before by switching schedules for the day if they get bored.
Year: Fourth year
House: Slytherin
Wand: Hornbeam, Phoenix feather core. 11 inches, sturdy and rigid. Descriptions of wand in spoiler. His wand's core comes from a phoenix that gave a second tail feather to the wand owned by his brother.

Show hidden content
"My own wand is made of hornbeam, and so it is with all due modesty that I state that hornbeam selects for its life mate the talented witch or wizard with a single, pure passion, which some might call obsession (though I prefer the term ‘vision’), which will almost always be realised. Hornbeam wands adapt more quickly than almost any other to their owner’s style of magic, and will become so personalised, so quickly, that other people will find them extremely difficult to use even for the most simple of spells. Hornbeam wands likewise absorb their owner’s code of honour, whatever that might be, and will refuse to perform acts – whether for good or ill – that do not tally with their master’s principles. A particularly fine-tuned and sentient wand."

Patronus: Hyena
Others: In the process of teaching himself to become an Animagus, which he assumes will be a hyena.
Quidditch Position: Beater
Blood Status: Muggle-born
Extra:Has a twin brother in Ravenclaw. The two are very close, and are often seen together.

“For the record, I’d never make you stand still for two hours if it were up to me.” Controlling guardians...admittedly, he couldn’t relate. But which was worse? Controlling or...? He felt his free hand subconsciously flit to his left cheek. “At least it’s not raining,” Amane joked, glancing up at the quite pretty blue skies dotted with a few clouds here and there. Compared to the chilly fog in the morning, the weather had become very pleasant, if not still a bit cool. “You’re an only child, then? I can imagine it must be frustrating not to be able to have anyone else to turn to.” Amane gave her a smile, pulling her slightly closer with a short tug. “Of course, now you’ve got me.”

Quickly turning and following after Ophelia, he was beyond relieved that his stunt had paid off. "Two hours?! I'd been there for maybe ten minutes and I was already done," Amane muttered back, offering his arm to her as they made their escape. "I'm just glad your grandmother bought it." With a hurried glance over his shoulder, the young man was relieved to find that the adults were completely preoccupied once more. "Sorry that I didn't come sooner," he said, raising his eyebrows. "If I'd have known that you were dealing with that, I'd have shown up as soon as possible." He chuckled a little, now that they were out of earshot. "Still, I wouldn't take my chances going too far. Your grandmother seems a bit overprotective." Although honestly...if a relative of his had tragically died right in front of him, he might be a little frantic about people he cared about going off on their own, too, no matter how illogical it was.

After a few torturous moments of silence, Amane glanced around again to find...almost no change. He'd caught Ophelia's gentle nod, and after waiting several minutes, decided it wouldn't be completely improper to at the very least comfort the poor older woman, who had quite nearly turned her handkerchief into a soppy mess. Gingerly picking his way over to her, Amane rested a hand on the woman's shoulder. "Excuse me, madame," he said quietly, proffering a handkerchief from his pocket. "I just wanted to say, I am very sorry for what has happened. I sincerely appreciated your daughter's grace and talent, something I am sure she inherited from you." While there certainly was a part of him - okay, it was mostly why he'd approached her - that wanted to get out of there (and bring poor Ophelia with him), he couldn't help the pang of pity and sympathy. After all, no matter how aggravating she might be, she'd lost her daughter. That was a lot. "Perhaps," Amane continued, straightening slightly, "we might leave those closer to Madame English some time alone, as I am sure this is hardest for them." Glancing up at the little crowd, he hoped that the two adults were too preoccupied to realize that the only two who would be leaving...would be the two teenagers. "It might be good for us younger folk to move while we think. I for one, find that I process things better with a quiet stroll." Amane silently begged for this to work. He really, really wasn't sure how long he could awkwardly stand staring at a stone, no matter how sad or sorry for everything he was.

Amane awkwardly straightened out a few wrinkles in his black coat. He wasn't entirely sure why he was even here. He'd had no connection to this woman. At all. Even so...it felt wrong to not show respect and pay homage to a death that happened mere feet from him. As he walked quietly between the headstones, scanning the last names, the teen wondered about the supposed revolution brewing in the colonies. In a few years time, how full would this place be? He shivered. How crowded would the graveyards be overseas...? It was nearly impossible, he knew, for the colonies to really drive off the global superpower that was the British Empire.

He turned left, following the names that went by. Glancing up, he saw another person kneeling quietly by English's grave, one of the people who had been at the interrogation earlier. Silently, Amane walked up beside the man, placing a single white rose on the grave himself. Unsure whether he ought to say anything, the teen simply gave the stranger a small nod before turning his attention back to the headstone. It was odd, standing at the grave of someone who'd been alive days ago. Who he'd known for only a moment or two. And yet, he was different from just another witness, because he'd been able to interact with her before her sudden death. It was a very odd feeling, this mix of guilt and acceptance and sorrow and neutrality.

He looked up once more. There was an older woman, who looked distraught, and a young lady next to...wait. Wasn't that Ophelia? The girl looked...as though she didn't quite know what to make of everything, which made sense, in hindsight of what she'd talked about before. It must be even weirder for her, as Madame English had been her relative, too. Amane shuffled his feet indecisively.
