Amane laughed lightly. "Oh, most people think Ravenclaws are odd. That's like, a house tradition." Amane jumped as food began appearing on the table. He was used to it, of course, but he hadn't been paying much attention and nearly rested his elbow in a bowl of jello. Upon hearing Alison's question, Amane frowned. "Avoid you? Um, no, not usually," he said, starting to feel a bit angry. Who on earth was treating this poor first-year so terribly?! "Alison, I think the people who did that are nothing for you to worry about. If you ask me, they're just stuck-up muggles who couldn't accept magic if it bit them on the hand. It's definitely hard attracting unwanted attention," Amane acknowledged while scooping a plate of mashed potatoes, "but I promise, no matter how weird or out of place you think you are, there's someone even odder than you at Hogwarts. And that's exactly the kind of person that belongs here." His warm smile returning, he motioned to the table. "Seems like it's dinner time; are you hungry?"

-

Nene sighed and gave a brisk nod, letting go of 'Ri's arm. Her friend was right; the hat was a problem for another day; and besides, it would be the professors' job first if anything was awry. Giggling at her friend's enthusiasm for dinner, the blonde gasped happily as the food appeared, as though 'Ri herself had summoned it with her words. "Yes, food, yay," Nene agreed, already reaching for a roll. "Oh! Like I was saying earlier, I started gardening over the summer. It's kind of hard, but I actually really like it! I think you would, too." She'd managed to grow both cucumbers and tomatoes, and even some flowers like camellias; while it wasn't exactly a dramatic feat, it was pretty successful, in her opinion. "I bet magical gardening is way weirder - I mean, remember some of the stuff we saw in Herbology?" Nene gave a shudder, recalling some very dangerous plants that they'd been introduced to.

Amane blinked. That...was probably one of the most normal ways someone had met Tsukasa in a long, long time. "Oh, is that all? That's a relief," he said with a sigh, relaxing a bit. "Usually he gets into trouble and drags people along, and that's how he meets people. It's totally not creepy," he added, waving a hand dismissively. "I like to people-watch, too. And Tsukasa's pretty interesting, I'll give him that." Amane laughed at this severe understatement; he'd never met anyone quite like his twin brother, and he didn't think he ever would.

Amane raised an eyebrow. "...yyyes, actually, his name is Tsukasa." He tried very, very hard to remember if Tsukasa had ever mentioned talking to Alison; while he recalled that she was the one they had seen in Madame Malkins', he was 99% sure that the two hadn't actually had a conversation. "Do...you two know each other?" Amane was definitely a bit confused, but knowing Tsukasa, there was probably a very unique answer to how on earth they seemed to be acquainted.

Nene was trying very hard not to squeeze her friend's arm too hard. "'Ri," she whispered between cheers for a newly assigned Gryffindor, "T-the hat...do you think everything's going to be okay?" Not that anything seemed out of the ordinary other than what the hat had said, but the more she thought about it, the more it freaked her out. Of course, she would do her best not to worry about it (she had things like O.W.L.S. to worry about instead!), but it definitely was making her a bit uneasy, and she could tell that 'Ri wasn't taking it lightly either, from the way her friend had tensed up for a few minutes after the hat's speech. What did 'Ri think about all of this? Despite the two girls being best friends, Nene sometimes found Hurricane to be so mysterious.

"Oh! Sorry, I didn't even introduce myself. I'm Amane Yugi," he said, pulling back out of the hug a bit. "I'm a fourth-year, and I've got a twin brother in Slytherin." He was glad that she seemed to have cheered a bit; her very stressed demeanor had melted slightly, and she was now smiling instead of sporting a grim expression. Amane gave her a smile, too. "I think the professor said that your name was Alison, right?"

She'd just read him like a book. Amane was surprised at first, before he recalled how observant she was. He gave a short laugh, staring at Ophelia with a hint of wonder. "That's exactly it, actually. People...ah, don't usually pay much attention to me, much less genuinely listen and agree to help me or do something with me. So it's a really pleasant surprise to find someone who, y'know, does do those things." He smiled once again, nudging his friend with his elbow. "But come on, who's trying to say you're not amusing? I think people just don't pay enough attention."

"Oh, is that it?" Amane gave her a gentle smile. "Don't worry, everyone's nervous when they start at a new school. Even a crazy, gigantic magical school," he said wryly, knowing exactly how shocking Hogwarts was compared to his previous muggle elementary school. He'd met his fair share of terrified first-year students; many of them who entered Ravenclaw were scared that they weren't smart enough to be in the house, and Amane did his absolute best to stomp out that idea just as suddenly as it occured. Maybe it was the older brother - albeit by only a few minutes, but nonetheless - in him, but he found himself wanting to look after all of the younger students. Acting on instinct, he pulled the girl into a warm hug. "You'll fit right in! And just let me know if you ever need anything, and I do mean anything."

Amane's head snapped up at the sound of the hat announcing a new Ravenclaw. Grinning, he made his way over to where she had sat. "Hey, there! Welcome to Ravenclaw!" Sitting down next to her, he gave her a friendly nudge. "It's the best house, you know," the fourth-year whispered, winking as he did so. The young blonde girl had a pretty neutral expression, but she seemed tense, and Amane wondered if maybe she'd wanted to be in a different house. "Is everything alright?" He hoped it wasn't too insensitive to ask, but she simply looked so...unexcited about the whole thing.

Amane listened. He listened closely. The Sorting Hat wasn't one to spew prophecies every year, and this was much different than its usual song. It listed several "animals" (Amane was sure that they were representative of something, but he wasn't sure what) and then mentioned Harry Potter. The boy felt a chill down his back. Hogwarts was in danger? The same kind that Harry Potter had faced? This was a different, different kind of atmosphere to start a new year in. He shook his head lightly. It would be better to just face the Sorting like normal and talk to Tsukasa later; there was no sense in scaring the brand new first-year students right out of the gate.

-

Tsukasa's grin dimmed slightly. Rather than being comforted, the girl seemed more distressed than before. How odd, another one of her unpredictable reactions. "Hmm?" He tilted his head to the side, wide eyes trained on Alison's expression. "Is something the matter?" Before she even got a chance to really hear the question, Tsukasa heard Professor Ruby call out Alison's name. "Oh!" Immediately, he turned and, grabbing her shoulders lightly, steered her towards the stool. "Your turn! Have fun," he said, waving as he quickly returned to the Slytherin table.

-

"Nail art?!" She leaned forward to listen to her friend, eyes widening as 'Ri listed the many different techniques. "Are you kidding? That's so cool! Way more interesting than garden-" Nene quickly broke off as Professor McGonagall began to speak. The Sorting Hat (really couldn't they at least patch the poor thing up a bit?) was brought out, and she waited eagerly to hear what funny rhymes it would speak this year. As the hat described each house, the blonde felt a glow of pride when it reached Hufflepuff. She loved her house, so, so much, and she wouldn't want to be in any of the others. Where else would she find a best friend like 'Ri and a bunch of other super supportive, kind friends? The hat started talking about animals, which made Nene a bit confused. What on earth did a rabbit dancing in water mean? And then it said "Potter", and Nene's world stopped a bit. Harry Potter? Exactly how much danger were they all in...? Quietly, she grabbed onto Ri's arm for support, feeling shivers pass through her. She might be "unafraid of toil" and "just and loyal", but bravery was in the Gryffindor department.

Letting out a small laugh, Tsukasa patted Alison gently on the shoulder. "Don't worry, you'll eat really well here. Yorkshire pudding is a regular." It made sense that she didn't have many preferences, if her mom was as busy as she'd said. He had to wonder how many choices she'd been able to make in the past. Hogwarts seemed to be a haven for most of the students, for one reason or another; Tsukasa anticipated that Alison would be one of many to find Hogwarts more of a home than anything before it. Softening slightly, he let his hand rest on her arm for a moment. "You won't have to worry about busy parents here. Hogwarts is like a home to all of the students; you'll find that out soon enough."

-

"UUUGHHHH, nooooo, I didn't, that's why I was hoping you would," Nene groaned, burying her face on the wooden surface of the table. "And all the cute boys that I've met here are either waaay out of my league or already have a girlfriend." Miserably, she recounted the boy she'd liked for a while in her first, second, and third years, but he'd barely noticed her at all (and had called her a daikon, to boot!). There was a really cute blonde boy in sixth year, but as she'd said, she was way out of his league, and the handsome brunet with the mischievous face seemed to be after a Ravenclaw girl. It was SO not fair. She knew that 'Ri really only liked adding to the conversation when it came to boys (Nene was dying to know why her friend wouldn't talk about her own crushes, but she didn't want to pry), so it made sense that she didn't have any news in that department. "Well, what about the hobbies, then? What does 'somewhat' mean?" Nene said, deciding to switch to the other topic she'd brought up.

Tsukasa, still with the same wide grin, just shrugged once more. "I have my own ways of getting what I need." After a beat, he jumped in with yet another question. "What's your favorite food? I mean, like, if you could choose anything for dinner right now, what would it be? I'd want a steak, or something like that." He wondered what she would think of the magical tables that simply produced food at the drop of a hat. Well- summoned would be a better word. Food was supposed to be impossible to create magically (which Tsukasa was very interested in testing out).

-

Nene giggled, enjoying the sudden change in attitude from her friend. "I think mine did, too. You've got to show me! Later, when we go up to the rooms," she said, bouncing in place. 'Ri was always so stylish, and she knew how to find the absolute best (and silliest!) trends that popped up. "My summer was good, but pretty boring," the blonde said, waving a hand as though to dismiss all the uninteresting events of the past few months. It wasn't that nothing had happened at all, but it was hard to find anything to compare to the adventures that would happen at school. "What about you, 'Ri? Did you find any new hobbies or something? Any cute boys?" Hopeful, Nene clasped her hands together with an innocent smile. "You have to have met at least like, two cute boys! Right?"

Tsukasa nodded in agreement. It wasn't as though he'd had much of a choice being placed in Slytherin, not knowing what any of it meant. "Well, I've heard that sometimes it listens to you, though. Maybe you could ask it. Do you think it talks to you out loud? Or in your head? I mean, it talked to me, but that was in my head, but how would you talk to it? Out loud or by thinking?" He tossed his head lightly. "Well, I'll figure it out eventually. You said your mom was busy? Adults are always busy. It's better to just do things yourself," Tsukasa said, shrugging as though he was simply telling her that cars ran on gasoline.

-

Nene gasped for air, resting against the back wall of the bustling hall. Why on earth did she have to pick one of the slowest carriages...? Afraid she was going to be late, she'd run all the way up here, only to find out that the Sorting hadn't really even started. The first-years were in a jumbled line as usual, so surely they'd start soon, and she saw the headmistress already trying to settle things down. Sighing lightly as she finally caught her breath, she couldn't help the excitement that swooshed through her. Another year at Hogwarts! Giddy, she began to make her way over to the Hufflepuff table, already eagerly imagining what all her classes would be like - ooh, what if there were hot guys in some of them? - and running through tomorrow's schedule in her mind. A very familiar figure caught her eye.

"Riiiiiiiiiiii!" Nene beamed, racing over to give her best friend a hug. "How was your summer?! I missed you so much, you have to tell me EVERYTHING," she said, overjoyed to see Hurricane once again. The two girls were in the same year, and they'd managed to form a unique kind of bond. They were the absolute definition of "organized chaos" - two outgoing, bubbly girls with little to no impulse control and a penchant for attracting trouble, whether intentionally or not.

"Yes, it is a very strange place," Tsukasa agreed, smiling up at the enchanted ceiling that was showing a beautifully clear night, spotted with stars. "That's why I like it so much." Looking back to Alison, he figured it was his turn to ask a question. "Is there a house you want to be in?" He wondered how much she'd heard about the houses - he and Amane had had no idea what their houses meant until a few weeks after the Sorting, after they'd observed the stereotypes and asked their peers about it. Supposedly, Slytherin was the house of the ambitious and cunning, and people thought that Slytherins were most likely to become evil. Ravenclaw was the house of wisdom and learning, but most people assumed that it was simply "smart people" and left it at that.

Amane smiled, grateful that Ophelia seemed to understand his burst of excitement. "Y-yeah, I definitely got more...um, energetic than normal," he said, relieved that the rational part of his brain had kept him from...expressing his enthusiasm in other ways. More ridiculous ways. "I'm glad that it was entertaining, at least." Amane laughed a bit in spite of himself; he probably had looked pretty silly, but his embarrassment was fading. He was comfortable around Ophelia, and it was clear that she wasn't here to just make fun of him.

Name: Nene Yashiro
Age: 15
Gender/Pronouns: She/her
Personality: Outgoing and earnest, Nene is an impulsive soul. Not one to always think things through, she tends to jump into situations without considering the consequences, which has gotten her into trouble many times. She is easily manipulated, but also quick to understand where she's gone wrong and what she ought to do to fix it (even if it's harder than she thinks). Nene is very kind and empathetic, unable to ignore someone who needs help. She believes in giving people a second chance, no matter what. She is also a hopeless romantic, which, coupled with her impulsive and slightly desperate nature, leads to some very silly antics. Nene doesn't have a lot of self-confidence, and she often feels inferior to those around her. Despite this, she tries not to let it get her down, and pours her energy into her studies, although she's still not sure what she wants to do as a job.
Appearance: Nene is a girl of average height for her age, around 5'2". She has light blonde, almost cream-colored hair that fades to a dyed teal at the tips, and it falls all the way to her waist. She usually has her hair pulled back a bit by two simple brown barrettes, and short bangs hang on her forehead. Nene has big, round, light brown eyes, that, if one looks closely, almost appear magenta or orange in different lighting. During the day, she can be seen in her Hufflepuff robes and the school uniform, but in her free time, she likes to wear various dresses and muggle clothes, usually in light or pastel colors with ruffles or simple patterns. One unique characteristic is that she has relatively wide lower legs and ankles, earning her the much-hated nickname, "daikon", in reference to her legs looking similar to a radish.
Year: Fifth year
House: Hufflepuff
Wand: Willow, unicorn hair core. 12 1/2 inches, sturdy but surprisingly flexible. Descriptions of wand in the spoiler.

Show hidden content
"Willow is an uncommon wand wood with healing power, and I have noted that the ideal owner for a willow wand often has some (usually unwarranted) insecurity, however well they may try and hide it. While many confident customers insist on trying a willow wand (attracted by their handsome appearance and well-founded reputation for enabling advanced, non-verbal magic) my willow wands have consistently selected those of greatest potential, rather than those who feel they have little to learn. It has always been a proverb in my family that he who has furthest to travel will go fastest with willow."

"Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard.

Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing."

Patronus: Unable to produce one yet
Others: Very in-tune with magic itself
Quidditch Position: N/A
Blood Status: Half-blood on her father's side
Extra: Her patronus will be a hamster, once she is able to produce it.

Well, that was a normal enough question for a first-year. Tsukasa remembered being quite surprised when students suddenly got sat on a stool and told where to spend the next seven years by a talking hat. He really, really wanted to know how that hat worked, but so far, he wasn't able to get his hands on it. "Mhm, most people start at age eleven and finish at age seventeen, once they're of age to perform magic. Oh, I guess that's why they did that," Tsukasa realized. "The Sorting Ceremony is where they put you into your house. A big magic hat comes and gives a speech in poem format and then it reads your mind and tells you which house to be in," the boy explained, miming the actions as he talked.

"I am enthusiastic," he replied, resisting the urge to spin around or maybe go run a marathon to expend the extra energy he suddenly had. His mind kept shouting more suggestions for ridiculous things to do, but once it came up with "kiss Ophelia" the rational part of his brain kicked back into action and told him to maybe not do these things. Instead, with a faint blush now, Amane settled with, "Thank you so much, Ophelia. I mean it. I might have gotten a bit carried away," he reflected, feeling just a shade of embarrassment for the way he'd hugged her out of nowhere.

"Amane and I are best friends and mostly inseperable," he said matter-of-factly, glancing over to the Ravenclaw table where he knew his brother was sitting, somewhere. Beaming, he turned his gaze back to Alison. "Well then, we're friends! I'm fourteen years old. You're probably eleven, right," Tsukasa added, phrasing it more as a statement than an inquiry. She seemed to have a lot of questions. That was a Ravenclaw thing, right? He had questions, too, though, and he was in Slytherin.

Beyond overjoyed by the fact that she'd reciprocated, Amane actually giggled, feeling lighter than air. "You have no idea. It's just, I haven't actually done anything with another person in a long time. I'm just so excited. This is going to be such an adventure! You're amazing," he said, not really caring what she thought of all of the nonsense he was currently spewing. Amane was way too happy to be worried about something as trivial as that. "You're amazing, and you're the best, and you're great, and you're amazing- wait, I said that already-" He laughed, trying to calm himself down a little. It's just- he hadn't felt happiness like this in a very long time.

Letting out a happy hum, he nodded. "Amane is the best. I'll call you just Alison, but if you want a friend I'll be your friend," Tsukasa said cheerfully. "I'm dependable, too. Well," he amended, placing a finger on his chin, "Amane says so, at least." He liked Alison a lot already. She was so straightforward, completely different than Amane, who was like a huge, million-piece jigsaw puzzle. Tsukasa found himself wondering what Alison would think about all the magical things that she had in store, and already, experiment ideas were popping into his head. Usually these ideas would be in the form of pranks, to get a reaction, but this time, it was more like simply introducing her to things and to see what new things she would say next.
