But my favorite part? When we were about to leave the firehouse, I saw some little snack or something. I asked my mom if I could have it. She told me "no, we've taken enough. There are others."
The fireman nearby? He saw how sad I was and did the smallest little gesture of kindness and compassion that still makes me cry to this day.
He waited for my mom to turn, grabbed the item, gave me the little "shh" motion, and with a wink snuck it into out things.

It's just a small thing. But that bit of simple compassion for a 10 yr old going through one of the hardest times of her life always makes me smile.

#MyFavoriteMemory is actually a sad one. And a 3-parter of sorts.

So I'm from New Orleans.

Leaving the city for Katrina, my family's car battery died at the gas station. Literally at the pump. A complete stranger stopped and helped us jump our car so we could make it out. It's one thing to be scared of a hurricane. It's another to be scared that you might not be able to evacuate.

We went to Florida. Jacksonville. We didnt tell some of our family where we were going. The day we arrived? Wouldnt you know it but not only did we find the family we hadnt told yet, but they were staying in the same motel.

Within a few days or a week after the hurricane destroyed everything, the firehouse across the street found out there were a lot of evacuees staying in the motel. They held a huge donation drive and invited every person and family that escaped to come take anything we needed. They gave us so much food to help us when we had nothing but what we shoved in our cars. [1/2]
