The journey was grueling, miles of nonstop travel through the unforgiving plains.
Even as the grass gave way to desert sand, you kept moving, for some reason, motivated by glory, curiosity, or simply the security of being able to live for another day. All that is certain is that the Festival is starting and you cannot afford to miss it this time.
Atop a large plateau, stood a stone fortress, weather-beaten but unwavering. It overlooked a vast oasis, though it was no place for relief. For the oasis, which should have been a place of refuge, was instead a place of horror and nightmares with withered tangling trees that blocked out the sun. Such a place should have long since caused you to turn around, but your desire was too great, whether it was for the pride of conquering the oasis, for the knowledge of what lurks within, or simply for the great reward promised by the Lord of the Fortress.
The Festival is shrouded in mystery, however those who have returned from the wastes were given treasures and honor above all. Though the number of victors are few, through desperation or pride, you trust your innate power to see you through the celebration. Despite your differing motivations, you all assembled outside the gates, eager for the chance to participate.
But is your flame of ambition bright enough to overcome the smothering darkness? We shall see, for the First Dusk of the Festival is nigh!
