Does using berries have a higher chance of candy compared to plain interactions?

Also, do the upgrades persist from year to year or will i have to re-purchase them next year?

Halloween upgrades have to be re-bought every year. But something I noticed is I started the event with a level of 3, and 3 candies, so I think Halloween levels persist across events

I believe berries give higher chance of candy but dont quote me on that
