Like a normal Mareep but I turn it into something not based real?

allow me to try and help you out a bit!
so, with an event the Pokemon is typically given some accessories/clothes, or a theme to follow.
for example, all of the current event Mareeps are themed around seasons, or the event Girafarig that's themed around a jester in colour scheme & dressed as such.
with a variant, it's all about how the Pokemon has adapted to a region and changed.
for example, with Hisuian Arcanine, due to the volcanic area it resides in, it turns a darker reddish-orange and its fur turns grey, likely to the smoke it's surrounded by. or, Hisuian Decidueye, who fights close quarters for its prey, hence why it has a sleeker form with bulkier legs. the extra layers of feathers it has allows it to insulate heat, keeping it warm in the typically cold area of Hisui.
tldr; a regional variant is a Pokemon that has adapted to the area it's in in parallel to where it's from. an event is a Pokemon that has a theme given to it without reason, sometimes given accessories.

both are parrots. but they are regional variants because the way they lived changed their looks.
