Your supposed to get two of the same pokemon. For example, I'm currently breeding bellsprouts. Make sure that they are not related to each other or else it won't work. Also, make sure that the genders are different. Once you add them in, pay the daycare owner some money and wait for eggs to appear.

Adding to this:
It's actually mostly fine if they're related, they just can't be brother and sister. Also doesn't need to be the same mon, you can also breed with other Pokemon of the same Eggroup (you can check for those in your pokedex. I think only the first eggroup listed counts for the mon though!) or Ditto!
It's also noteworthy that some Pokemon aren't breedable. For example most legendaries or baby Pokemon. Usually those are in the Undiscovered eggroup!
I have no idea what I’m doing but I’m doing something.

You must have PokeDollar deposited at the daycare for them to breed too. It might take some time, but you will get a notification if you get eggs :)
If you get any of the following messages below your Pokemon in the daycare, they are sure to produce eggs (in varying quantity):
"The two seem to get along."

"The two seem to get along very well."

"The two seem to match perfectly."

As mentioned before, the compabitity is decided by which Pokemon you put together. To get a perfect match, you would need:
1 male and 1 female of the exact same species (like 2 Pikachu instead of 1 Pikachu and 1 Raichu)
Both Pokemon must have different OT (Original Trainer, you can check those on the Pokemons page, it's basically who hatched the egg). It's perfect if 1 Pokemon has YOU as OT and the other Pokemon is someone else's.
I think you have higher breeding chances, if you breed the base evolution of a Pokemon (like Bulbasaur instead of Venusaur), but I'm not sure about this.

And, just in case you want to breed PH Event Pokemon: You would put 1 Event Pokemon + either a ditto or the same event Pokemon or the original base version of the event (like Caterpie for Catercream). Breeding Event Pokemon will mostly give you the original Pokemons egg (again, when breeding Catercream for example, you get a lot of Caterpie eggs). And each egg has a small chance to be a Event egg instead.
You can buy the Key Item "Wide Lens" to scan eggs in the daycare before adopting them.

Oh yeah, and different to the main games, if you breed two different Pokemon (from the same egg group), for example Caterpie and Weedle (they are both from the Bug egggroup, but different species), you get BOTH Caterpie and Weedle eggs
