Shadow Radar?

I am not understanding the shadow radar "game" at all...I only get the option to flee the non-shadow ones and only battle shadows, I eventually get to 3-5 in a row before another pokemon crashes it. I don't even see the the image below with the pokeball and the different colors to avoid certain spots.

Because you're hunting Shadows, you can't catch the normal ones.
The pokéball is a placeholder for the pokémon you found. Imagine the pokéball in the last spot you click and count 4 spots in either direction. From then on (and further) it's safe to click again.
