While I have friended a few people, I don't actually talk to anyone here and I don't really know how to go about it- ;-; Any suggestions or tips? Should I try to message people? Or would people not like that?

It really depends on the person if you decided to pm or palpad them. Always read their rules when trying to palpad or pming them! Just talk in the forums and hopefully, they will send you a friend request and vice versa.
