"Hey, Colt! Good to hear from you! Yeah, school's a pain, but it's great to be around kids my age. Amaya loves it, won't stop talking about her classes at dinner." He seemed to be attempting to create chatter, though he couldn't easily hide the anxious undertone of his voice. Clearly something was wrong. Meanwhile, the doorbell rang.

"I'll get it!" Cam called from the kitchen.

Colt moved out of the foyer and into the sitting room as the clatter of his mother setting out plates sounded from the kitchen. "Everything good?" he asked his friend, a subtle concern slipping into his voice. He wanted to keep things a bit light, though. "Grandma and Grandpa aren't over-feeding you guys, are they? I know they love to guilt trip anyone they can into eating far more than they should."

When Cam answered the door, there was a package lying on the front door.


Dan laughed. "No, they're great. Amaya gained back a ton of the weight she lost during..well, you know. But, the thing is, I'm worried about Nadia."

Cam didn't think much of the item. It was Christmas season, and their first with Nadia at that. He and Colt were spoiling her on their own; he could only imagine what their parents might be doing for her. Picking it up and taking it inside, he called, "Anyone's online order come today?"

Colt's demeanor immediately shifted, and he sat down on the couch, lowering his voice. "What's up? Can I help?"

The package was actually addressed to Nadia, with no return address.


"It's just that..I've been noticing the signs, based on what Nadia's been telling me, and what happens on school. I think someone from the Society's been following her."

Glancing down at the package, Cam then called, "Nadia! Package for you!" "Stop yelling and go find her!" his mom admonished.

A dark look passed over the 19-year-old's face, and, though he hadn't meant to say it aloud, a bitter mutter of, "Why can't we just be happy?" slipped out of of his mouth. After a moment, he added, "What have you seen? Should we get the police involved again?" Nothing was happening to Nadia again. Not now, not ever. He'd hardly been able to live with himself... last time. He didn't know what he would do if anything ever, ever occurred again.

Nadia had been trying to convince Norbert to try some of her french toast, looked up. "I hear you Cam, coming!" Nadia came into the foyer. "That's weird, I didn't order anything..."


"No, the police can't help us. When's a good time for me to come over?"

"That's odd. Mom might have made a mistake when ordering a present for you, but she's pretty experienced with online purchasing," he frowned. "No, I didn't!" his mom responded from the kitchen. "Hurry up; breakfast is getting cold." "Coming! Want to open it?" he asked Nadia.

"Any time. We are going to be seeing each other in just a couple days for Christmas, but it's best to talk as soon as we can. Cam or I could come get you today, if you're cool with that."

"Yeah, you go ahead," Nadia said, starting to unwrap it, "I'll join you in a minute." Once Cam had left, she completely opened the box to reveal a small device similar to an IPod. A note on the front read, "Use the chip in your necklace." Nadia looked down at her necklace and picked up the charm. As she moved her fingers over it, she realized there was a latch. She forced it open, and picked up a chip from inside it.


"That's fine, I can get to you myself, in most an hour or so."

Colt nodded slowly, glancing over his shoulder to where Nadia sat on the stairs, fumbling with something, then back to the room in front of him. “Sounds good. Stay safe, man. See you soon. If you hurry, you might be able to have some of Mom’s strawberry French toast.” After saying goodbye and hanging up the phone, he made his way to the kitchen, setting Nadia’s phone at the edge of the bar in favor of grabbing a plate instead, which he quickly loaded with thick slices of his mother’s homemade sweetbread that had been doused in strawberry syrup and covered with Cool Whip and slices of fresh strawberries.

Nadia stayed still for a while, debating on whether or not she should put the chip in and figure out what the importance of the chip was. She finally decided to pocket the machine, putting the chip back and standing up to join the others in the kitchen. Later, she managed to get close enough to Colt to ask him, "So what did Dan want?"

Colt glanced up from the Christmas card he was writing, half-covering the name it was addressed to on the envelope with one hand. "Oh, he wanted to come talk about something with us. He's going to be here later today. He didn't say if he was bringing Amaya or not. Has he met your new friend yet?"

"Yeah," Nadia laughed as she sat down across from him, "I think she scares him." She began wolfing down her food faster then a person her size should have been able to, and stopped to say, after swallowing a bite of food, "Oh, I opened the package I got today. Found something weird."

"I was referring to Norbert," he laughed, recalling Zie. She seemed a bit odd, but he was used to a bit odd. His smile faded, though, when he recalled the conversation with Dan. Was anyone they associated with safe? What if his and Nadia's past caused hurt to come to their family, their neighbors, their friends? Were his college friends safe? Was anyone?

He shook the thoughts away, refocusing. "Oh? What was it?"

"You are the worst," Nadia sighed, but then grinned, "Glad to have you on the team, Godzilla." Later, Nadia was sitting on the ground by the couch cross-legged, trying to figure out how to insert the chip into the player. That's when the doorbell rang again.
