Nadia looked up, and after a few minutes, sighed. "I'm fine, Cam. Just a nightmare." She knew that the look on her face betrayed her, but she didn't want to worry anyone. But the look of terror was still vivid from her mother's face, and the pain from seeing her again, even if it was just a dream. She slowly lowered her hand from her side, though it was still stinging, as it always did when she was stressed.

Cam wanted to believe her. He knew everything was usually nothing. Given her and his brother's history, though, he always had a hard time passing things off as "fine". It was a habit of his that, while it was rarely expressed in front of Nadia, had annoyed Colt to the extreme at first. He was trying to let it go.

"Would it help to watch a bit of TV?" he asked her gently, gesturing to the sitting room as he walked forwards to give her a comforting one-armed hug. "We could find a nature show, something peaceful that your brain might focus on instead of whatever caused it."

The stinging was starting to stop, and Nadia nodded, trying not to cry. "I think that'd be nice." She didn't say anything for awhile, but during the show, she pulled out the silver necklace that she normally kept hidden, fiddling with the charm between her fingers.

Colt awoke the next morning to find Cam and Nadia asleep on the couch as David Attenborough's voice rung through the room, Angel curled lovingly beside the latter. Though asleep, Nadia's face looked rather troubled, nearly frightened. He didn't want to wake her; he recalled Cam doing exactly this for him when he'd had nightmares in early middle school. Instead, his mind drafted up the bright idea to make breakfast for the two, and some idiot secretary in his brain approved the motion. While he hadn't woken them up, the sound of smoke alarms going off in the kitchen as French toast burst into flames on the griddle most certainly did.

Nadia woke up slowly, but the smell of burning toast caused her eyes to shoot open as she rushed into the kitchen, slipping on the tile and grabbing a hold of the counter, almost falling to the floor as she yelped. She pulled herself up, and quickly helped put Colt's disaster of a French Toast fire out, then scolded him loudly in Spanish for five minutes. She had forgotten about the necklace, which was still hanging freely from her neck.

"I am so, so sorry," Colt grimaced as his parents quickly joined the group in the kitchen. His father's work was canceled for the time being due to the snow, so he was there as well. All he could say to his son was, "How on Earth have you survived nearly four months in college?"

After everything calmed down, Nadia went to feed and wake up Norbert, sighing and saying something about Colt going to burn the neighborhood down.

The moment Nadia was gone, Colt took Cam aside. "Did she have trouble falling asleep last night?" he asked him, concern in his voice. His brother nodded slightly. "I think she was having nightmares. They might have had something to do with... er, y'know. She was holding her side." A frown crept across Colt's face. He wanted nothing more than to be normal, despite the events of the past year. He wanted to be an average college student with a best friend, an older brother, two loving parents, and a dog, who came home during the breaks to a normal house with normal, or perhaps just slightly eccentric, neighbors.

Seeing his brother's discomfort and changing the subject slightly, Cam asked him, "Did Mom get that necklace for her? I don't recall ever seeing it before, but she kept messing with it last night." Colt shook his head. "You would know better than I would. Not this summer. She might have had it at school last year, but I don't remember." Cam nodded thoughtfully, then shrugged. "I'm going to help Mom make some unburnt French toast. Please wake me up next time you have a sudden muse come about you to cook." With a mock scowl, in tone of hurt Colt sulked, "I'm going to go find Nadia. She believes in my cooking. ...Okay, she totally doesn't and is worse to me about it than you are, but still!"

Nadia had finished feeding Norbert and was starting to come downstairs when she suddenly sat down again, holding up Norbert to eye level, his bright eyes blinking and nose twitching. Acting as if he had said something, she sighed. "I know I should tell them, but I don't want to worry them. And why should I be thinking about her? She left my life years ago!" Norbert squeaked, and she huffed, "They'd just worry." She looked down at her necklace and jumped. "Geez, that's still out. Can't let them see it." She tucked the necklace back under her shift, put Norbert on her head, and continued down the stairs.

Colt met Nadia halfway down the stairs, stopping her by reaching out a hand to touch her shoulder. "Hey," he said softly, glancing back up the stairs to make sure his dad wasn't within earshot. "Rough night? Is there anything I should know about?" He didn't doubt that there could be something and she just wouldn't tell him, but it could never hurt to ask. He genuinely cared for the girl, but while her stubbornness was endearing, it also could be a nuisance at times.

Nadia froze, debating whether or not to tell him. She sighed, looking up to scratch Norbert's nose, who had peeked out from his perch on her head. "I had a nightmare last night." She was silent for a few seconds, before blurting out, "About my mom," then looking like she'd like to stuff those words back in her mouth.

Sympathy washed over the blond's face and he quickly pulled her into a hug. "I'm sorry," was all he could think to say. Nadia never spoke about her mom, and that was enough for him to understand that the topic was painful. He knew he was lucky to have a full, functioning family; fewer and fewer people seemed to nowadays.

"She's been missing for a while," Nadia mumbled, looking down at her feet as Norbert squeaked in protest. "That's why we...me and my dad left Mexico. I didn't think I'd have to remember her. But...I did. And I wish I didn't, but I'm also glad I did. I was starting to forget her."

He nodded, mind flickering to his mother in the kitchen. "Remembering hurts, but I... I think it's what makes us human. It helps, too." Cam wasn't supposed to have been the oldest. They were going to have had a sister. She'd died before she was born, but their parents had chosen to name her Elia. It was a name more Hebrew than Irish, but every time Colt recalled its meaning, he felt like he might tear up. He wondered what she would have been like.

He stroked Norbert with a small smile. "Do you have many fond memories of her?"

"I don't remember a lot about her. Mostly..a field near our house. We would play in it when I was small." She pulled out her necklace and rubbed her fingers against it. "Sometimes..sometimes I think that I remember her giving this, but it's all fuzzy. I don't even know what it means. I..didn't want to tell anyone, so I kept it hidden."

The first thing to pop into his mind when he saw her necklace were the recollections of several unsolved mysteries from the year prior. He hated how his brain kept bringing it up, again and again. He knew they were safe now, but the possibility that they might not be still haunted him. He just hoped it didn't haunt her.

"That sounds beautiful. I didn't know there were fields in Mexico; I assumed it was all just desert and cacti wearing sombreros. And whatever it means," he said in a cheerful tone. "We'll figure it out together. Just like we always do!"

Nadia finally smiled, saying, "Yeah, I guess that those things seem to work out, huh?" She brightened considerably, saying, "Here, hold Norbert," and dumping the rat in Colt's hands, saying over her shoulder as she hurried up the stairs, "I gotta tell Dan and Amaya you're finally back, they've missed you a ton!"

"What do I do with this thing?!" he called after her in mild panic, staring down at the rat in his palms. It seemed to meet his stare blankly. Great. He sighed. "Like carrots?" Colt asked the rat resignedly, making his way back down the stairs and earning a strange look from Cam.

The rat squeaked in greeting, its tail flicking against Colt's hands. Later, Nadia came downstairs, the phone to her ear. "Wait a sec...okay, he's right here." She bounced up to Colt, taking the rat from him and trading it for her phone. "Dan wants to talk to you," she whispered.
