Land markers were scarce once in the thick of the forest-- visually at least.

The sound of North was constant, no matter what position you took. It came in the form of a constant thunderous crash-- water slapping to the subterrain from what felt like hundreds meters up, pouring in tons of water from the higher plateau and pooling at the lake which then drained into underground canals, feeding the root system of the forest.
