I understand that if you auction a pokemon you get the money if someone buys it. But if you release it, do you just get nothing? then what's the point of releasing pokemon over auctioning?

No, you get nothing from releasing. It's whole purpose is to just quickly get rid of something you don't need/want. Whereas auctions take an hour to finish at minimum with the chance to not even sell, as well as you getting an arguably insignificant amount of Pokedollar afterwards even if it does, unless you're selling a valuable pokemon. Releasing serves to get rid of the 'useless' pokemon.
