Benjamin jolted in his seat, then snapped his notebook shut, hoping
Fauna hadn't seen what it had been turned to. "Uhm, studying a
little is all. What about you?" His ears had lain themselves flat
against his head, and his tail twitched awkwardly under the seat.
Fauna raised her eyebrow and smiled, but said nothing of it.
Everyone was entitled to secrets. "Well, I came in to have a chat
with Kyleen. She's supposed to be meeting me here," she said,
glancing around the room.
Fauna paused, trying to decide whether or not to tell him. She
finally said, "Well, last year, I started having this strange
nightmare. It happened for months and months. I..saw something.
Some kind of, I don't know, fish snake or something. And I want to
ask Kyleen about it."
Benjamin looked thoughtful for a moment. "What about the glowworms?
Do you think they would know what it might be?" He knew, or hoped,
that they did. "They do seem to know nearly everything about..
Well, everything." He gave her a weak smile.
Fauna shook her head. "The glowworms know a lot, but they can't see
outside of the school, and I don't think there's a Leviathan
swimming in the school anywhere. Whenever I ask them, they just
either don't respond or tell me plain and simple that they do not
know. But Kyleen's been outside the school, and she knows about
magical creatures."
Benjamin nodded slowly. Turning his head, he looked past Fauna,
where he heard the door open. "That might be her." He waited for
whoever it was to come around the corner so he could see them.
Kyleen walked through the door, nosed buried in a large book that
looked about as old as the school and about as big. She somehow
noticed them and lowered the book. "Hi, Ky!" Fauna laughed.
"Reading again?" Kyleen nodded. "I might have some answers for you
now." She then saw Benjamin. "Oh. Hello Benjamin."
Benjamin nodded another greeting, then let his notebook lay face
down on the table. He sat back in his seat and yawned, his sharp
teeth serrating the edges of his lips.
Kyleen placed the book on a table with a thud. "This book describes
the theory of alternate dimensions. Apparently, with enough energy
in one place, you can create overlapping dimensions. It is said
that one of them leads to a frozen lake." Fauna gasped. "Just like
in my dream!" Kyleen nodded. "Exactly."
At that, Benjamin leaned forwards a little. "Say what?" His own
dream swam through his mind slowly, his mind proclaiming what the
illusion was. "I don't suppose I could read that once you're
finished with it, could I?"
Kyleen nodded. "But we should probably talk to Boreas and Max
before making any plans," she said to Fauna. Fauna turned to
Benjamin. "Would you want to come with us?"
