Just a story thing about one of my characters, Calamity. Kinda the whole idea of the story is based on the fact that she's never seen the real world before, and how she'd react if she saw what it was like for the first time, with no real knowledge about anything in the world, or even her own purpose.
Obviously not canon to any storyline involving my characters, just a fun little side project out of boredom.

Introduction

Sitting in a place of complete nothingness was practically the only way Calamity could spend her days. Nothing to do, nothing to see. Absolutely nothing at all, except for herself. Sure, she could sleep if she really wanted to, but there wasn't much point, she never really got tired, and it wasn't like there was any sense of time in this place. There wasn't much point walking around either, everything was just the same, plain pure white. This was the place she called 'home', as much as she hated it, it was all she's ever known for as long as she's been aware of her existence. Some days she just idly wished for something more, for something to change, for something to do. That's how she spent most of her days, sitting down, bored, and just wishing for something to happen for once.
One day she seemed to get that wish. After spending who knows how long trapped in that blank white space, she found herself staring at an odd structure that others could quite easily recognise as a portal but, with her being trapped here for so long surrounded by pure emptiness, she didn't have a clue what it was. Cautiously approaching it, she was highly curious. Nothing had ever appeared here before, in all her time being here. What if it was dangerous in some way? It didn't seem to be doing anything, yet, aside from just being there. What if it disappeared and never returned? What if this was her only chance of escape? With those thoughts in mind, she got closer. It still hadn't actually done anything, so she carefully put her hand through it. Her hand just seemed to vanish, right there, causing her to jump back in shock. She looked at her hand, the one that had 'disappeared' and everything was just as it was before she put her hand through it, her hand was still there, nothing had changed about it, as far as she could tell. She was confused, yet also more curious about the slightly floating dark shape in front of her, and after a while of thinking about it, her curiosity finally got the better of her and she decided to try walking into this weird thing, whatever it was.

Chapter 1: A New 'Home'

Calamity took a few more steps forward, through the portal, just expecting to walk straight through it and just see more empty white space.
She completely froze when she saw what was actually on the other side of that dark shape, almost falling backwards in complete shock. There was hardly anything she could call plain or white, it was far too much for her to take in at first. She quickly found herself confused on what to look at, what to focus on first. She jumped at every new sound she heard, her eyes flickered to any sudden movement. She was trying to focus on figuring everything out, simply because she's never seen anything like any of this. The sheer amount of different sounds was starting to give her a bit of a headache, and she couldn't even make out what thing was making what noise. She could vaguely recognise the sound of people speaking to each other, she knew what voices sounded like, due to hearing her own while she was sitting alone, sometimes speaking aloud to fill the silence she used to be surrounded by. The amount of colours surprised her, and she found herself quickly losing count of the amount of different colours she saw - far more than she'd even be able to name, and all the movement was almost making her dizzy. Everything in general was quite quickly overwhelming her senses.

After at least 20 minutes of trying to calm herself down, and just focus on things bit by bit, she tried looking around. The moment she looked behind herself, she realised the dark shape she had walked through to get here was completely gone, meaning that she didn't really have any way back. She didn't mind though, of course, she never wanted to go back to that blank white void ever again. Even if this new place was quite overwhelming and confusing, there were actually things to look at, there were colours, and sounds that weren't just her own voice. Calamity very quickly became quite inquisitive about her surroundings. None of the structures or other things looked like anything she remotely recognised, and her long black tail was flicking in excitement of the idea of figuring out what everything was. Considering that there wasn't any way back, she guessed that she could call this new place 'home', it was a far better place to try to call home than the emptiness she left behind, at least. She smiled, looking around and genuinely feeling happy for once. She had something to explore, to figure out. No longer trapped and confined to an empty space, she was finally free to do what she wanted! Including staying here, for as long as she possibly could, to figure out what all of these new, strange things were.

Chapter 2: An Unexpected Meeting

Calamity saw the amount of people walking around, and thought that it might look awkward with her just standing still, looking around, so she decided to walk around a bit, maybe get a better look at some of the different things around. She walked for quite a while, looking at the different shops, houses and pretty much anything she came across, and she couldn't wait to learn what everything was. It wasn't too long, however, before she ended up tripping and falling across the ground.
"Ow..." She muttered, slightly irritated as she pushed herself back up off of the ground. She wasn't used to being able to trip over things, let alone the ground actually being hard enough for her to mildly hurt herself upon falling. She may have gotten a couple of weird looks, a couple of people probably ended up laughing at her, but was it because of her falling over, or her rather odd appearance? Either way, Calamity didn't particularly care what people thought of her or her actions, she was far too focused on wanting to explore more, figure out everything, and so she went back on her way, just walking. Of course, she tried to be a little more careful this time so she didn't end up tripping over again.
Eventually, she found herself standing near a field. She carefully walked across the grass, unsure of what this new floor surface was supposed to be. She quickly realised it felt quite soft underfoot, and she saw little white and yellow flowers in the grass. She walked over to one of the yellow flowers and picked it from the ground, looking at it closely. She was very intrigued by these small, colourful things in the green ground - just as she was intrigued by mostly everything else. She decided to sit down on this soft green surface, picking a couple more of the small yellow flowers, and looking at them all in her hand. Do they do something if I gather them together? Or are they just adding colour to this world? She thought to herself, questioning these small little plants. After a little more time checking over the little yellow flowers, and some of the white ones, she put them back in the grass and lay back, looking up at the clear blue sky. She found it so nice and relaxing to be able to see colours when she looked around. It wasn't too long before she closed her eyes, just happy and content to lie in the grass for a little while longer.

Around 10 minutes later, Calamity jumped up suddenly, as a boy tripped over her.
"Sorry." She heard him say flatly, as she watched him get up from the floor. "Who the hell even lies in the grass, anyway?" He said, turning around to actually look at her. Grass. That's what this green stuff is called then. She thought, taking mental note of that.
"Its.. comfortable." She admitted. "Don't other people do this?"
"Pffff, yea sure other people do this." He said sarcastically, his long black dragon tail flicking every now and then. "If you're a dog, or some other animal, that is."
Calamity slowly sat up, carefully getting to her feet, taking some mental notes on the boy's appearance as she got to her feet. He had black hair, with black dragon horns too, and he was wearing a black jacket, trousers and trainers. Aside from his black dragon tail, he also had a pair of black dragon wings - one of which appeared to be broken. Despite his mostly dark appearance, his eyes were a striking shade of pale, icy blue.
"Ha... ha?" She said, not sure if she should actually laugh or not. "Who are you, anyway?"
"Shadow." His response was simple, short, as he stood facing her, putting his hands in his pockets casually. "And you?"
"Uh.." She paused for a moment, thinking. "Calamity. My name's Calamity."
"Nice to meet you then, I guess." He said, offering his hand out for her to shake.

Chapter 3: A Place To Stay

The two spoke to each other for a little while, Shadow quite quickly figuring out that Calamity wasn't from this world, at all. Calamity was quite careful to not mention where she'd been trapped for most of her life, she didn't like to talk about it, which was something Shadow seemed to understand quite well.
"I'm not from around here myself, originally anyway." He admitted, with a shrug.
Calamity just nodded. "How do you know so much about this place then? Like the name of everything?"
He couldn't help but laugh a bit at that. "Where I was from was similar in some ways."
"My place wasn't anything like this.." She sighed. "It's too much to try and understand."
Shadow went quiet for a moment, thinking. "I mean, I guess I could teach you some things..?" He offered, a little bit awkwardly.
"Yes! Sure! I mean, please." She sounded really excited, to actually start her personal quest of learning about this place.
With that, the two walked off together, Shadow trying to explain a few things to Calamity, such as houses, shops, cars, etc. While they were walking, a leaf fell off of a tree, probably from someone's garden, and landed in front of Calamity causing her to jump back. "The hell was that?" She asked.
Shadow was trying not to laugh at the situation. "It's a leaf. They grow on trees and stuff, and eventually fall off, mostly in Autumn." He shrugged. "They won't kill ya or anythin."
Calamity laughed slightly. "Sorry, I've just never seen them before, just like everything else here."
"It's fine." He yawned, just feeling a bit tired. It was starting to get later on in the day, too. Not night time, yet, but late afternoon at least. "Either way, I'm headin home."
Calamity tilted her head slightly, almost like a confused puppy. "Can I... go with you?"
Upon realising that she'd technically have no home otherwise, he nodded. "As long as you try not to break anything." He said, with a slight shrug, and walked off to his home, or at the very least the place he called home for now. She followed him, stretching all four of her wings out as she walked.

After a while, Shadow reached the front door of his house and opened it, to let Calamity in. "Welcome home, I guess."
Calamity nodded, looking around at everything in amazement as she walked into the house. All of this was new to her, as to be expected, and she was just filled with curiosity about everything. Shadow walked into the living room and sat down on the couch for a bit, while she wandered around the room looking at everything. "This is.. your home?" She asked.
"Yup. Been living here practically since I ended up in this world." He shrugged, stretching his left wing out as he yawned.
"And you're fine with me staying here?"
"Sure. Stay as long as you want, there's even a spare room upstairs for you to sleep in, 'cuz I'm the only one that lives here, so I'm not exactly using the other room myself."
Calamity nodded. "Thank you." She said, quietly, walking over and sitting down next to him on the couch, still looking around the room with mild curiosity. She really was like an excited child, seeing everything for the first time ever, her gaze full of wonder and amazement at everything she saw.

Chapter 4: The Ending Of The First Day

While Shadow had picked up the TV remote and was idly flicking through the channels to see if anything caught his interest, Calamity was left just looking around for a while. For a few moments there was an odd, but not necessarily awkward, silence between them. That was until Calamity's gaze fell back on Shadow's broken wing.
"So..." she started, not entirely sure how to phrase the question she wanted to ask.
"'So..' what?" he asked, stopping what he was doing to look at her as he stretched.
"So uh..." She thought for another moment. "What's wrong with your wing?" She asked, not even registering how her question could be touching on a subject that Shadow wouldn't want to talk about.
Shadow himself was quiet for a moment, before he answered. "It's.. broken. That's all."
"Well, can't you just get it fixed then?" She tilted her head, almost like a puppy.
He couldn't help but laugh at that. "I wish it was just that simple, honestly. It's been broken for a long time, and knowing my luck if I did manage to get it fixed, my other wing would end up being broken twice as bad."
"Oh.." she said, looking to the floor. "Sorry if I.. said anything bad or anything."
"Nah, it's fine, honestly." He shrugged lightly, Better than asking how it got broken, anyway, he thought, flicking through a few more channels on the TV but finding nothing particularly interesting. "Anyway," he said, wanting a bit of a change of topic, "Do you want anything to eat, or drink, or just, anything?" he asked, leaving the TV on whatever channel he had changed it to, presuming that there probably just wasn't anything interesting on at this time of day.
Whatever it was on the TV, it seemed to hold Calamity's attention quite well as she found herself staring at all of the movement and colours in front of her, all contained in this simple rectangular shape. Were people trapped in there? Was it some form of containment unit for people? These questions, and more, whirled around her head before she even registered the fact that Shadow had spoken to her.
"What did you say? Sorry, I was just.. thinking." She tore her attention away from the TV to look at him.
"I was just asking if you were hungry or wanted anything, that's all."
She thought for a moment, feeling really stupid when she finally asked, "What does hungry mean?"
Shadow couldn't help but laugh. "There's no way in hell that you're seriously telling me that you've never been hungry at any point in your entire life. The next thing you're gonna say is that you don't even know what food is!"
She quietly looked to the ground, her tail curling around her legs as she didn't answer. She really didn't know what food was - or the concept of hunger, but she didn't want to vocalise that fact after it being brought up in such a way.
After seeing her reaction, he felt the slightest bit of guilt, "You're.. being serious? What kind of world did you live in, where you don't even know what food is?" He couldn't help but ask, hoping for some form of understanding on why she doesn't understand anything about this world.
"I..." She paused at the question, thinking back to the prison she had been locked in for so long. She wasn't sure about where she had even gotten that word from, or why it felt so right to apply it to the place she was locked in. The feathers on her larger wings shifted to a black to silver-y grey gradient rather than the black to brown one that they were before, with the smaller ones shifting to a gradient of dark grey to black. Her hair mimicked the colouration of her larger wings, with a streak of dark red through the front of her fringe that covered her left eye. "I don't... want to talk about it." She said, softly. An odd, unfamiliar feeling gripped her, as if she could just be sent back at any moment. It was a feeling that she had never felt before, fear. She pulled her legs up to her chest, curling her tail and wings around herself tightly as if it would protect her from even the idea of being returned to her prison, as she called it. "I-I.. I don't want to go back! I.. I can't go back!"
The half-dragon boy was taken by surprise at her reaction to what he thought was a harmless question. He found himself at a loss of how to properly react, having never had to really comfort someone before, it wasn't exactly one of his strong points. He lightly rested his hand on her shoulder. "It's.. fine! I won't ask about it again, I promise!" He found himself struggling to think of what to say to even begin to calm her down. "I'm sure you won't go back to.. wherever that place is, you're here now, you're safe." For the most part, I'd hope, he added, in his own thoughts.
She didn't properly respond, wrapping her wings more tightly around herself as she tried to suppress her tears, though it wasn't long before those attempts fell through and she found herself crying, wrapped up in those thoughts of being thrown back into the place she's not long gained freedom from, the few positive thoughts she tried to hold onto being quickly drowned out by the negative. Shadow softly wrapped his one arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer in a form of side-hug, hoping that she'd at least calm herself down soon as he didn't really know what else he could do. She allowed herself to be pulled closer, though still tried to hide her face in one of her wings.
Minutes passed, and the two sat in near-silence, with the only noticeable noises being the TV that was left running, and the occasional car passing by outside.
It was nearly half an hour before Calamity finally looked up, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her jacket. "I.. I don't want to go back," she said, sounding rather tired, as well as upset.
Shadow just hugged her a little bit tighter. "You're not going to go back." He said, unsure of how true that statement really was. He also wanted to reassure the strange girl, and calm her nerves at least a little bit.
She only nodded a little in response, before yawning, a confused expression appearing on her face. "W-what was that?" She looked almost worried, as if what happened was harmful in some way.
"That was just a yawn." He smiled a little bit, glad that she at least seemed mostly calm now. "It normally means that you're tired, and being tired just means that you need sleep, before you ask about that."
"But.. I've never needed sleep before..." She looked even more confused upon learning that.
"Maybe the fact that you're in another world caused some type of change? I'm not sure how things like that typically work, myself. I mean, me ending up here from my old world caused me to be unable to age for some odd reason."
"What if I decide that I don't want to sleep, though? What'll happen if I just decide not to?"
"Trust me when I say, it's a lot easier to just sleep, than to actively try to avoid sleep under all circumstances. You'll just make yourself more tired, in the end, and it's just not worth it."
She quietly thought for a moment, before sighing. "Fiiiiine, I'll sleep." She whined in a child-like tone.
"Come on then, I'll show you where the spare bedroom is." He said, getting up carefully and offering a hand to help Calamity up, which she accepted. He walked upstairs, and guided her to the spare room, as well as pointing out his own room in case she needed something and he wasn't downstairs.
The room she walked into wasn't decorated in any specific fashion, and was rather basic with just a standard wooden wardrobe, a single bed, a window, a desk with a couple of drawers and a television. Though, how basic the room was didn't bother her in the slightest as she looked around, walking towards the window to look outside. The sky was painted in an array of colours - orange, purple, a bit of red and pink, dark blue - marking the time as sunset. She found herself amazed at the colours of the sky, unable to tear her gaze from the window.
"Would you be alright with being here, on your own to settle down while I just make myself something to eat and chill downstairs?" Shadow asked, his dragon tail flicking slightly.
Her only response was to nod as she continued to stare at the colours in the sky outside of the window, with even the clouds taking on different shades of yellow and red from the light of the setting sun. Shadow slowly closed the door as he left the room, leaving her to get used to it all in peace, as he headed downstairs and into the kitchen.

Calamity stayed there in the window, with an occasional yawn, watching the sun set. It wasn't until well-after the sky had been covered with darkness, with sparkling little specks scattered across it, when she decided to lie down. She looked around the room, her eyes eventually falling on the bed, which she recognised as at least a flat surface big enough for her to lie down comfortably on. She walked over to the bed, sitting on it at first and being surprised at how comfortable the material of this strange thing was. She slowly, carefully, lay down on her side, stretching across the bed, just lightly testing it out. Eventually she rolled onto her back, resting her head against the pillow lightly, and looking at the ceiling. Her wings stretched out as she yawned again, rolling onto her side so she was facing the wall, and closing her eyes.

Chapter 5: A New Day

The morning was cold, cold enough to cause a thin layer of frost to form across the grass. Surrounding the rising sun, and creating a border across the sky, was a rather bright shade of light gold, blended perfectly with the light blue hue that the rest of the sky took on. The majority of the sky was clear, with a few thin scattered clouds far off, breaking up the light gold line than the sun created as it rose. Birds darted across the sky, perching on trees and bushes to sing their morning song.

Calamity curled up and shivered as she was just starting to wake up. She wrapped her hands around the blanket, which must have been placed over her during the night, and pulled it closer in an attempt to keep herself warm. She slowly opened her eyes, confused as to what she was holding, and yawned. As she propped herself up on the pillow she was resting on, she rubbed her eyes. A brief moment of panic washed over her as she expected the room to fade away into solid white, for this all to be a dream or some vivid hallucination. She looked around the room, and when she realised that nothing was changing or disappearing, she calmed down. Her focus was then drawn to the piece of fabric draped over her, twisting it around in her hands. It was so soft, and fluffy, she couldn't help but bunch the material together, pressing her head into it.

Her tail and wings wrapped around herself, her feathers shifting back to the brown and black gradients that they had the day before. As her hair slowly changed back to the black and brown gradient, and her eyes returned to their deep blue, she remained curled up, with her head snuggled into the soft material of the blanket. There was something she found oddly calming in the simple act. A few moments passed before she lifted her head, stretching both pairs of her wings out as much as she could for a moment.

She slowly pushed herself off of the bed, unwrapping her tail from around herself and bunching the blanket together so she could carry it with her. Walking over to the window, she gazed outside, watching the birds dart across the sky. There was something about the movement of the feathered creatures that caused Calamity to unfold her wings, she didn't fully understand why she felt this way, or what this feeling even was. She just knew that a part of her wanted to be out, up there with the various shapes dancing and darting through the sky.

Her tail swayed, her wings twitching occasionally, until she turned around, her attention being caught by a new smell. She walked towards the door of her room, slowly opening it while keeping the blanket bundled up and across her other arm. She didn't know how to describe the smell, but the same could be said about a lot of things she has experienced so far, and she had figured by now that the best way to learn about things was to ask about them.

While she was heading downstairs, she figured that the smell must be coming from the room at the end of the hallway - the kitchen. As she stepped into the doorway of the room, she saw Shadow, and a plate with two slices of burnt toast on the kitchen side nearest to him.
When he noticed Calamity, he waved slightly. "Sorry about this," he said, gesturing to the plate of burnt toast. "I wanted to try to make you breakfast, but I didn't know what you'd like, so I tried making something basic, just toast, and I well, basically, I burned it."
"What does burned mean?" she asked, adjusting the position of the blanket in her arms so it was more comfortable for her to hold, rather than it being bunched up and balanced across her arm.
"When something's burned it basically means it's been heated up too much, or set on fire, but making toast doesn't tend to require fire in any amount unless you're actually trying to burn it."
She nodded slightly, indicating that she heard what Shadow had said, as she thought for a moment. Fire. She couldn't put any specific imagery to the word, but it carried an odd familiarity to it. It was something that she found incredibly strange - she knew that she didn't know what fire was but at the same time she felt like she did.
"If you want I can try making you some toast that isn't burnt?" Shadow offered. "I can't make any guarantees, though, considering the way my luck is sometimes."
Calamity nodded, jumping up onto the kitchen side to sit down and nearly flicking the plate off of it with her tail by accident in the process. "I wanna watch!"

Shadow tried not to laugh at how enthusiastic she was to watch something as simple as making toast, and picked up the plate. He threw the burnt pieces of toast in the trash, and put two slices of bread in the toaster before turning the toaster on and hoping that the toast doesn't end up burning again. When the toast popped up, Calamity ended up jumping up and back with a yelp of surprise, hitting her head off of the wall that was behind her. Her left wings were half-wrapped around herself defensively.

"Are you okay?" Shadow stepped forward, reaching a hand out to try to help her up. In response to his question, she shook her head, holding the back of her head with one hand. There were tears in her eyes as she tried not to cry, not being used to any sort of pain - even rather minor things like this. She accepted his help to get up, and pushed herself off of the kitchen side so that she was standing, her wings folding once more.
"I'm sorry about that, I probably should've told you beforehand. Honestly, I didn't expect it to scare you that much." He sighed slightly. "Why don't you go sit on the couch in the living room, while I finish sorting this out? It won't take that long, being honest." I'm really great at messing things up, aren't I? he thought to himself.
Calamity nodded, quietly walking into the living room and curling up on the end of the couch, pressing her head into the bunched-up blanket. She softly rubbed the back of her head, her tail wrapping loosely around herself. Curling up like this seemed to bring some kind of comfort to her, whether she was in pain, upset or stressed, it seemed to be her attempt at calming herself down. A few moments passed with her curled up like this, before she felt a tap on her shoulder. She looked up to see Shadow, holding a plate with the two slices of toast, each cut roughly in half.
“I decided to just leave them plain because I didn’t know what you’d like, I hope that’s alright with you.”
Calamity nodded. “Thank you,” she said softly, sitting up properly on the sofa and letting the blanket fall out of her arms as she reached to take the plate. She picked up one of the quarters of toast, and quietly ate it.
As Shadow was walking to sit down on the other side of the couch, he decided to take one of the other quarters of toast from Calamity’s plate. Seeing the look on her face, he laughed, “What? I’m not hungry enough to justify making an entire slice of toast to myself, and it’s not like I took all of the toast off of the plate, it’s only half a slice.”
“Yea but, you said you were making the toast for me,” she whined, with a slightly grumpy expression, as if she felt betrayed in some way.
“But think about all the time and effort that went into trying to make that toast, I mean, I had to try to make it twice.” It was rather clear through his tone that he wasn’t actually being serious.
She huffed, “I’ll get you back for this later.” Though, despite her expression, she was actually trying not to laugh. She went back to eating the remaining two halves of toast, wrapping her wings around the plate as if trying to protect them from being stolen. Shadow leaned back slightly on the couch, and ate the “stolen” piece of toast.
Once Calamity had finished eating, she poked him in the arm, holding out the empty plate for him to take.
“Oh so you want me to take this and put it away?” he said as he stood up, taking the plate off of her.
She nodded, “I don’t know where to put it.” She spoke with an innocent smile, before flopping across the entire couch as Shadow left to clean up the plate and put it away. When he returned, she sat up, cuddling the blanket in her arms again as she twisted one of the corners of it around in her hands.
“You really like that blanket don’t you?” He said, sitting down and watching the way she played with the blanket.
She nodded, smiling. “I like it! Makes me happy.” She pressed her head into the blanket again, even this small action just made her happy and comfortable.
He smiled slightly. As long as she’s happy and comfortable, I guess everything’s alright, he thought. He looked out of the window, just trying to decide what to do during the rest of the day.
