Not sure if this needs spoiler tags, but for safety's sake

Is it possible for the rings to appear in locations that you don't have unlocked yet? Like I've haven't bought the pokeradar from the shop yet so that section of the menu is all still question marks for me, as an example. Could the last ring I need be hanging out there, or is there something to protect against that happening?
