Irwin took a deep breath trying to get out of clouds and to do his job. It was rare for him to be under stress while working. His best guess was that it was that was because there was no one to keep him calm. And to keep others from hurting his pride. He knew that he needed to wait only for few more hours or so while his servants were picking a perfect person.
He took a look around his room to ground himself. Bookshelves were full of books without a bit of dust. His flowers seemed as pretty as always and they imitated a nice smell. His two old armchairs were as uncomfortable as every other day. Or at least the one he was sitting in. The other was for is calmer half. He realized that his thoughts have wondered again to a new person that should work for him. He knew that he won't be able to focus on his work so he just enjoyed a moonlight that was coming through a big window wall.
He drove up to a large home, parking in the driveway, turning off the car. He grabbed the suitcase, and got out of the car. He closed the door, locking the vehicle. He blinked and sighed. He tucked the letter into his hoodie pocket, smiling.
He was wearing a grey hoodie that read "Pardon My French" in white. He had a little white skirt on, and grey flats. Under his hoodie, he had on a grey crop top. He had mascara on, but that was all makeup wise. His glasses were clean, and he smiled. He walked up the steps to the front door, ringing the doorbell. His suitcase was at his side, and he shifted in front of the door nervously, staring up at the door. Oliver swallowed the lump in his throat, a shiver running down his thin spine.
He was angry. Why would anyone come when they knew that he didn't have a protector. If it was another vampire it should of have known better. If it was any other kind of supernatural creature -well then he will fight them. They knew well enough that they should of have called and he wasn't prepared for the visit. What meant that he wasn't in one of his formal suits and showing up in this suit would be inappropriate. He should change into something prettier but he didn't have time. At the end, he decided to go out of his room in the suit he was wearing. It was an expensive suit that was worth more than the whole property of some people, but it wasn't the best he had. His look was complete with red bow tie and silk ribbon that held his hair in a ponytail.
Even though he was beautifully dressed for anyone that saw him that wasn't part of the aristocracy, he thought that it wasn't enough what made his pride hurt. He went down wide stairs and next to old statues made of marble and stopped in front of old oak doors that were now open and servant was talking with someone. He was confused so he coughed in his sleeve to get servants attention. When servant turned around to bow to him, he noticed a short person. He didn't know what the person was doing there. He looked them right in the eyes while the servant was still bowing. ''What are you doing here?'' He said checking out small person.
"I-I'm here to be the n-n-new protector... I'm Oliver Carson Hymun." He said softly, his voice wavering. He shifted under the man's gaze, feeling vulnerable. He felt powerless. He was terrified. His former excitment had flown out of the window.
Just by the man's demeanor, Oliver could tell he was a vampire. His aura made Oliver quiver. His gaze made Oliver straighten. His face made Oliver feel hot. Oliver couldn't deny that the man in front of him was handsome. But he wasn't here for a love interest. He was here to become the vampire's protector. He shivered, grip tightening on his suitcase.
Irwin looked at Oliver once more guessing that he was some kind of a fairy. He knew that fairies were pretty and had quite a power for different things but he didn't really know a lot about them because they never interested him. He did work with few of them on some parties, but he wasn't sure if he could trust them.
He huffed and turned around to face servant that was still bowing. ''You can look at me now.'' He said seriously. He was unsure of what to do with red hair but he didn't let it show. ''You will show my mansion to my new protector and get him used to all the rules.'' It was followed by fast. ''Yes, master.'' He was ready to walk off but he stopped and thought for a second or two before turning around. ''Actually, I will take him for a tour. You go and do your usual job.'' It was said in such an intimating voice that servant, who would usually tell him that he will take care, just nodded and ran off.
''Listen, I will tell you everything you need to know,'' Irwin said eyeing the red-haired boy again. ''You can ask questions if you want,'' he added in cold voice before turning around and deciding to take him on a tour.
He had never been with many vampires before, two or three. He worked with one once, she was kinda nice. Cold, but she warmed up to Oliver after a while. Another one he had met when he was in school. They were a bully, and Oliver was a top notch victim. Apparently, the shorter you are, the more you get teased. It made sense, Oli supposed. The other has had met had been his mom's friend. She was warm and nice. She babysitted him when he was a baby.
But this man before him was unlike the others. He was cold, colder than the air around Oliver. But he was hot at the same time, a blaze of rage waiting to be released on some poor soul. He was dark, the look in his eye was menacing. He was light, he looked graceful. He scared Oliver. He was so many things, and Oliver felt like nothing. A stupid little fairy. This vampire could crush him like a bug.
Oliver shifted, looking around the home. He cleared his throat quietly. He looked up at Irwin with sparkling blue eyes. "I-I suppose you a-a-are Irwin, sir? It's an honor to meet yo-you..." Olive couldn't keep his words from breaking. He curtsied slowly, straightening soon after. His hands felt sweaty, and he discreetly wiped them on his skirt. He shivered.
After Oliver spoke up again Irwin decided to start the tour from a ballroom. He walked slowly through the foyer towards the ballroom. The foyer was huge room made of black marble with six white marble statues and big red carpet going down the stairs all the way to the door. On the walls were black and white pictures with red details, most of them of woman and flowers.
Irwin didn't care if the little boy was following him, but he listened to what Oliver was saying. Outside of stuttering, the boy actually had a voice that was pleasant to the ear. And he also had some kind of the accent. At first, Irwin was surprised that he didn't notice it before but then he realized that Oliver didn't talk much before. Or now for that matter. Only when Irwin focused on the boy's voice did he notice what Oliver said. He huffed at the words. ''Yes, I am Irwin. And it's nice to meet you, too.'' He said calmly but coldly. ''Would you tell me on which conditions did my butler choose you?'' His voice was as cold as before but there was some curiosity in it, too.
He tilted his head at the question. He swallowed, doing his best not to stammer as he spoke. "Uhm, conditions? Well, that depends on what you mean... He chose me because I have experience with supernatural individuals and because I know how vampires work. I was part of a class on what body language and other things mean for different kinds of supernatural creatures. We spent three days studying vampires and took a test-" Olive faded as he realized he was rambling. He cleared his throat. "Sorry for rambling... Anyways.... If you were talking about the terms and conditions, there weren't many. Stay out of your room unless dire emergency. Try to stay close to you, around the same room or the room next door. I suppose that goes with the stay out of your room, since I have to be in another. Anyways, there was also a rule about not giving you any blood, no matter what. And one about making sure you take your occasional iron pills." Oliver explained the rules he had been told to follow, his voice soft. The accent he had curled the words lightly.
Oliver's suitcase rolled behind him as he talked and followed. He gripped it softly, curling his toes a bit. He looked up at the back of Irwin's head, eyes trailing down his ponytail. He realized he was quite a bit shorter than the other, and sighed. He was shorter than everyone nowadays.
Next room was a ballroom. It was a big old styled room with marble floor and golden pillars around which flowers were growing. It was one of the biggest rooms in the house and had the most windows. It was because it was a part of the house that was mostly surrounded the garden and only one wall was touching the walls of the house. From all three walls of windows, the said garden could be seen. It was a garden full of night blooming flowers with a sweet smell.
When Irwin finished looking around the room he turned around to look at Oliver again. ''It's nice to know that they informed you about everything.'' He said coldly while looking at the small boy. Then he licked his teeth and lips. ''Even though I would rather if they didn't tell you that you shouldn't share blood.'' He said that honestly and he didn't think that it might scare little boy.
''Anyway,'' he said while turning around, ''this is a ballroom. Like you can guess, here we cost balls. I love to have the fanciest suit and one that fits the theme most, for each ball. If you want I can get you one.'' He turned around and checked out Oliver again with his eyes not showing any emotions. ''Or we can get you dress if you want,'' he added. ''After all, I just want everyone in this home to feel welcomed. Even if they are just a guest. Not that you are one.''
He stopped and looked at boy's suitcase. ''You can leave it here,'' he said pointing at it. ''I will show you garden next. Ask me any question you have.''
After listening to Irwin talk on balls and dresses and such, he huffed. "I-I'm sure I don't need you to get me one. That would be asking a lot, yeah?" He quipped softly, and set down his suitcase as he was told. Since he no longer had that sturdy bar to grip, he squeezed his hands, holding them together.
He decided to inside walk side by side with Irwin, thinking that might help with the occasional awkward silence. He stood beside him, looking around at the ballroom. He heaved a sigh of awe. 'It's so beautiful! I cannot believe I get to live here.' He thought to himself. He thought it may be rude to say out loud, so he kept it to himself. He blinked.
Would he be a servant? Treated as equal to Irwin? He doubted either of those. Probably treated like an elongated guest. Hopefully. He didn't want to be so high or low on the caste scale of this mansion. The middle would be fine.
While he was looking at the boy, he noticed that impressed boy was with his ballroom what made him think: 'What class was this boy from?' Surely he was nice dressed, not like a servant but also not like an aristocrat. He realized that boy is probably from the middle class and marked down to ask him later on about it.
''We can continue this conversation outside...'' He said as he opened a glass door for the little boy. The smell of night blooming flowers was in the air and Irwin took a deep breath just so he can enjoy the scent. It was a scent that he loved and it always helped him calm down.
His gaze wandered to the flowers, and he smiled. He loved flowers, and these made him smile and his heart warm. A breeze blew through his hair, blowing it into his face. It cut his vision into strips until he pulled it out of his face. He swallowed softly, glancing at the vampire beside him. He sighed.
"Um... I'm sorry about the dress. If you want, you can buy me one. I just didn't want to be a hassle or an annoyance. It would also probably feel awkward if a guy was wearing a dress at one of your fancy balls. People may even be disgusted, from what I've experienced." He said, rambling for the second time since he had met this man. He coughed softly, glancing at the ground. "I'm sorry." He murmured, looking back at the flowers. He seemed to want to gaze everywhere but the fanged aristocrat he was next to. He bit the inside of his cheek softly.
''Listen, if you want to wear a dress who am I to stop you? I cared for way too long about what other supernaturals might think. It's time for supernaturals to open their mind. Dark age wasn't dark only for humans, we, supernaturals, lost a lot of our culture and acceptance too. I am happy to see someone break norms put here by young,'' He stopped for a second, ''-er supernaturals.'' When he was done with his rant he went deeper into the garden. He was a bit sad and it could be heard in his voice, but at the same time, he tried to hide it with a sharp tone.
He sat down on the stone bench in front of the fountain while watching clear water burst out of the top of the fountain. The fountain was made to look like a bunch of little angels. It was obviously made by humans because it looked nothing like real angels that were tall warriors.
Flowers around fountain were jasmines and the place was surrounded by a hedge that gave off a pleasant atmosphere. It was all made very symmetrically and aesthetically pleasing. He personally gave instructions about how the garden should be made and he was proud how it turned out. This was a middle of the garden and rest was leading to this spot.
Irwin looked towards Oliver. ''You can sit here next to me if you want. I will tell you some of the stuff that my butler didn't tell you.''
Oliver followed Irwin to the center of the garden, and closed his eyes momentarily. He breathed in, and felt his body relax. Being a nature fairy, flowers and trees were like home to him. Their aroma was amazing, making Oliver feel whole again. He twirled a little in place, letting out a soft giggle. He loved this too.
He was pulled out of his trance by Irwin's words. He opened his eyes. He hadn't completely followed Irwin to the fountain, and stood a good 5 feet from it. He smiled, walking up to the fountain and taking a seat next to the vampire. He smiled.
He looked down at the clear fountain water. He wanted to run his hand through it, but was sure Irwin might bark and snap at him. So he didn't. Instead, he settled for just staring at the waters, watching the occasionally bubble spring from the bottom. He turned, smiling up at Irwin genuinely.
likes towards the person in question.
As boy sat down, Irwin was ready to start telling other male about some of his rules and rules that are only meant for protectors. Well, he was ready, till he saw boy smile at him. At that moment he lost all the words he learned over his long lifetime. And even if he had words he wasn't sure if he could describe how cute and aesthetic this boy looked. He wanted to keep him next to his side forever.
The moment when he stopped staring at the smiling boy was the moment when he felt a blush creep up his cheeks. He looked away and coughed few times. He knew that blush probably wasn't visible on the weak shine of moonlight, and because he was a vampire so there was little of blood warm enough to make his cheeks as bright red as humans, but he still felt embarrassed. After all, he was supposed to be this though vampire leader, not some teenage boy that blushed.
''I am glad to see that you enjoy my garden.'' Irwin proclaimed in a business tone. ''However, we won't be able to spend too much time here thanks to all the parties we have to attend.'' He stopped and looked at the boy again. ''At the parties, you must make sure that I don't get into a fight that might end with blood spilling. It might sound funny for someone as old as me to end up in a fight over...'' He stopped to think about stupidest thing he got in fight for, ''I don't know... Which numbers are aesthetically pleasing.''
When Irwin looked away with a blush, Oliver blinked. He couldn't tell the blush, but he almost jumped when Irwin coughed. Was he sick? Did vampires even get sick? His hand twitched and he reached out to place it on the man's shoulder. His thin limb froze as the vampire began to speak. He retracted his hand, and realized the fanged male hadn't seen him outstretch it. He let it fall back into his lap.
He listened to Irwin, and his shoulders slumped a bit as he heard that he wouldn't be out here often. But he continued to smile softly. He tilted his head as Irwin talked about party fights. He giggled as Irwin said the stupidest thing he had fought over. "One time I fought with my best friend over the colors of the rainbow. She believed pink was after purple. It was... Funny. I had to show her a photo of a rainbow. She doesn't believe me to this day. It's kind of dumb." He giggled, a blush covering his cheeks from his laughter.
When Oliver spoke up about his friend, Irwin smiled. ''I maybe don't know much about rainbows because I did not have much luck to see one.'' He took a small break and decided to explain. ''You know because of the sun.'' He smiled. ''But I saw a few moonbows through my long life, so I can say that the last color in the rainbow, or the moonbow, is violet.''
Irwin realized how relaxed he was next to this boy, maybe he was a good choice for his protector. ''On the theme of the rules.'' He tried to sound more professional but failed. ''You must also know about me more than any of my servants, but my life story is too long so I will tell you few things about myself later.'' The thought came to his mind and he looked at the boy. ''And you must never do anything that might embarrass me on the parties. That means you must look presentable, walk behind me and talk to other protectors or same or lower rank than you. You might not talk to anyone in a class higher than you.'' He was now deadly serious.
Oliver listened, but began to tense up as Irwin became serious. It scared him a bit. But he straightened and gave a soft smile. "How am I to know who is high, the same, and lower....?" He asked, voice soft. He was nervous that he would anger the supernatural man before him. "Will you help me know who is high and who is not...? Will I be allowed to talk to you, since you're higher up than I? What if I accidentally talk to someone important? Will I be fired? Killed?" His voice seemed to go up in pitch as he talked. He was nervous.
He coughed into his fist, and sighed. "S-sorry, I'm just... Not used to all of this. Sorry for the questions." He murmured, voice soft and quiet. If someone else had been only five feet from them, they probably couldn't hear. But he was sure Irwin could hear him, considering how close they currently were. His shoulder was nearly brushing the other's arm.
Even sitting next to the other, Oliver was small. He only went up to the others shoulder, and even then it was only by the top of his curly hair. And he was sitting completely straight, and his head barely reached the others shoulder. He sighed, looking up at Irwin with soft, almost scared eyes. He wasn't scared of Irwin, oh no. He was terrified of the balls and parties Irwin had talked of. He didn't want to screw things up.
