I got a Caterpie and I tried nicknaming it emoji characters. I just
named it one smiley face and then the name just turned from that
emoji to 4 Question Marks. I have seen Emoji and other Unicode
Characters in Pokemon nicknames and I want to do so but it won't
let me. Is there anyway Riako can fix this bug or is it
intentional?
Try using the Unicode for the emoji instead of the actual emoji.

Not sure what to do about that, since I've been trying other
methods as well.

looking at a thread at phpbb it says something about
"&(remove)amp;#153;" showing a trademark symbol
apparently what shows up in the storage box is what php renders the
nickname. however the name on the interact page says what i
nicknamed it.
