So, Polo was a stray. Very obviously though, he belonged to/used to belong to someone - he looked way too cared for (albeit a little on the skinny side upon finding) for him to be a street cat.
For weeks, several people kept seeing him in random places all over the city, posted ads and whatnot all over Facebook and the like, too. But no one ever claimed to be his owner.
A student then took him in temporarily, and made it her business to find him a new forever home - since she couldn't take him in for long herself, what with living in a small dorm room and all. And after a little over a month of looking for his owner, she still couldn't find them, either.
This is where I came in and brought him home with me. He warmed up to me immediately (he was a very social cat to begin with), and he seemingly loved his new home; no hiding under the bed or behavior that would otherwise point towards him not feeling well. He ate and drank well, was very lively all around, and recognized the cat toilet for what it was after I showed him also.
It honestly was A Match ♥.
Then, a few days later, I dug up some of the old Facebook posts of people finding him and looking for his owner. And, lo and behold, under one of the many re-shares (of a vet's of all people) looking for Polo's owner, someone claimed they knew the actual owner. After 5 or so weeks of no one ever coming forth. (At this point, Polo was with me for 3 or 4 days, and the comment was about 8 hours old when I saw it.)
Despite the possibility of me "losing" Polo, I contacted them - I ain't no cat thief or what, and I'm definitely not egoistical enough of a human to just .. ignore the comment, as if I had never seen it. That just ain't me. And if someone seriously was missing their cat, who am I to withhold it from them?
So I explained the situation to the lady who commented under said post, that I took in the cat, yadda yadda. With only his best interest in mind, a few chats with who turned out to be the neighbor, as well as a phone call and a visit of the would-be owner later, I said good-bye to Polo yesterday, and he was brought back to his previous owners.
They repeatedly thanked me (brought me chocolates too), and while I put on my big girl pants and smiled my way through the whole thing, I'm honestly very sad and depressed right now.
I really loved Polo (it's what the student named him btw; and I found it to be a cute and strangely fitting name, so I kept it for him), and I like to think he appreciated me too. Even if it was just a few days that we got to spend together.
I just hope I did the right thing by giving him back; the family (I only met the dad and the three kiddos, but still) seemed nice and all - and that he didn't stray because he hated it there or what, but because he was a young and curious cat (he also wasn't neutered yet, if you get my meaning winkwonk).
Ah, man.
I hope he gets to live his best life, and that they treat him well. I'll miss the everloving heck out of the baby boy.
