Jing Yu's tiny lapse in chatter wasn't missed by Liyu.

She flinched.

He had enough to worry about without her constantly snubbing his attempts are conversation.

Yet it felt like so long ago that she'd truly felt happy, so long ago when she could take satisfaction in all the small delights of life and not worry about the future. So long ago when she didn't bury herself in work.

So long ago when she would just smile...

Subconsciously, she fiddled with the star at her chest.

Jing Yu picking up his one-sided conversation again pulled her back to reality.

Maybe she could finally make the two of them smile for real again.

Just once.

In truth, she had been neglecting sleep and meals, yet they weren't particularly high on her priorities list to begin with. As long as she had enough energy to continue working, there was no point in wasting time on such things.

Liyu stood up soundlessly and gathered her things. She tucked her chair in neatly, and even brushed the surface of the desk. The air shimmered again, a single butterfly landed on her shoulder, flapped its wings once, and vanished.

The sole student left in the classroom, Liyu sat silently in the back corner and flipped through her thick book, stopping occasionally to take notes. She didn't notice how the few students who'd wandered in had left, how the teacher was getting ready to leave, how the window next to her had slowly darkened into the reddish-orange colour that now peeked through.

"Anemone, cold, removes toxins, reduces inflammation. Honey locust, treats coughs and boils." She muttered softly as she copied down the herbs and their uses.

The air around her shimmered slightly, images of the herbs appearing and disappearing.
