"I..."

Liyu stopped.

He might never trust her again.

He might hate her for it.

He should.

She hated herself for it.

But wasn't it her wish to be like the moon?

Perfect and lonely.

"They told me it would make you like them. They said we would finally be accepted."

Excuses.

Slowly, she removed the star from her dress.

A push of the topmost point revealed that the star opened.

Inside rested a single purple petal.

Toxic to their species.

Liyu had always thought of Jing Yu as surrounded by a halo of golden light. Whether he was sad, happy or angry, the halo was always there, brightening the world around him.

Finally, it flickered.

It faltered.

The light falling away in confused ripples, like it didn't know what to say, what to think, what to feel.

Where it used to be, there was instead pleading, searching eyes.

What was he looking for?

What did he want from her?

Suddenly, she realised she didn't know anything about him.

She'd always observed him from a distance, watched him laugh with his friends, charm everyone he met.

And so the gap between them grew.

"I should have known they'd make their move. I should have known how to remove the poison."

"I should have saved you."

Liyu stared unblinkingly at Jing Yu, her expression the complete opposite of his.

Closed off, and cold. Oh, so very cold.

It was how she'd learnt to deal with the guilt she'd carried all the way from that day, to neutralise and freeze any and all leftover emotions.

She cared, and she cared too much.

That day, which had gone from glistening starlight to absolute darkness.

Perhaps that was why she craved the light, to forcibly push away the dark.

"You didn't know. No one knew."

"I should have known."

Liyu blinked, the slight haze that always seemed to cloud her gaze dissipating, revealing startlingly clear eyes.

Jing Yu looked doubtful, almost scared.

What had changed?

A foolish question.

Everything had changed, from the moment she'd failed to reach him, and the tense hours afterwards where she'd been unable to do anything.

Utterly, utterly useless.

"You almost died."

Something about the way Jing Yu said it made Liyu pause before answering.

"Is there... Something wrong with that?"

If she could become like the moon, ethereal and glowing, she would no longer be the weak one dragging down the family name anymore. Jing Yu shined like the sun, he was naturally charismatic and got along so easily with everyone.

What would he know about the moon?

The moon was beautiful, it hung high in the sky, outshining even the brightest golden stars.

"Maybe..."

Perhaps the moon was lonely, but wasn't it worth being lonely to shine brightly?

Was it?

Was it worth giving up your own selfish bids at belonging to receive prizes and praise?

"But poets write of its eternal elegance, and sing of its pure beauty."

"See Bingbing? It's all just a matter of confidence."

Ldeya laughed at Song BingLiu's enthusiasm. The nickname wasn't new, she'd picked it up almost immediately after meeting him.

Liyu smiled and made a perfect copy of the cake appear on the table, then waved her hands and dissipated it into smoke.

Glancing at the window which had a view of the sea, a flicker of silver was steadily growing on the horizon.

The moon.

"Watch the moon rise from the sea, isn't it such a pretty thing?"

Liyu flipped through the menu curiously, her head tilting slightly like that of a little bird.

It had been so long since she'd cared about what she was eating, or even if she was eating. So long as she could get through the day without fainting.

A small light sponge cake caught her eye, and she tentatively pointed at it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Athena had summoned a draft to lift her onto the school roofs.
Off to make a delivery to her final victim customer as a student.
Liyu snapped out of her thoughts and climbed out as gracefully as she’d entered, taking Jing Yu’s arm lightly.
Her steps were gentle as the breeze that rippled through the air, bringing with it a swarm of butterflies, one of which landed on Jing Yu’s head.
It was her way of trying.
Liyu looked out her window absently, seeing how the light faded from the world but not really registering the sight.
Once in a while, her mind would flicker back to her studies that day.
Why wasn't she studying?
She was spending time with Jing Yu.
Was that really more important than work?
Did she really have time to waste?
No, being with Jing Yu wasn't wasting time.
Right?
So they spent the trip in silence, the night slowly growing darker outside.
"My voice sounds perfectly lovely when you use it~"
Her laugh was amused at his clumsy behaviour.
"Interesting."
Ldeya tilted her head slightly upon hearing her own voice speak. If she was surprised, she gave no indication of it. Although the sparkle of her eyes showed that she was impressed and intrigued. Perhaps Song BingLiu was the only one who could successfully impress her.
Ldeya turned the same moment Song BingLiu glanced behind her, eyes focusing on Professor Satou striding towards them. Smiling charismatically, she could almost feel Song BingLiu's nervousness radiating off him.
"Yeah..."
Liyu didn't really know what to say. Even with her own brother, conversation was difficult. It was one of those things of the past she'd somehow lost along the way, trading it for her grades and acceptable reputation.
"Of course."
Liyu took Jing Yu's hand and stepped into the carriage gracefully.
Inside, she squeezed herself into a little corner, a small smile tugging at her lips.
"Umm..."
If she was being honest, Liyu was a bit overwhelmed by all of Jing Yu's suggestions. She was still processing the idea of cakes when she realised he was waiting for an answer.
"Maybe... Cakes would be nice."
It was the only one she'd actually heard.
"Oh?"
Ldeya raised an eyebrow at his stammered response.
"Are you just glancing over there hopefully to see what the professors are eating?"
She smiled lightly, the sharp corners of her demeanor softening ever so slightly. As absolutely boring and stiff as Song BingLiu was, no one could ignore the time and effort he put into his studies. It was obvious there was something he'd been working on that he was excited to show the teachers, one of the rare students who actually bothered with studies over the holidays.
"What newest magic trick have you figured out?"
"Maybe we should go somewhere else."
Something about the situation made Liyu smile for a fraction of a second, the corners of her mouth lifting.
So the vice-prefects weren't important enough to get announced?
Ldeya mock-pouted, although it was no surprise that the teacher's pet Song BingLiu was prefect.
Crossing her legs, she examined the slightly bloody steak before her, elegantly cutting it apart. Her posture was a combination of perfectly mannered grace and sarcastic boredom, her head resting on a knuckle. Red eyes bright and piercing, a few students made attempts at timid conversation before shrinking back when she focused on them.
This was boring.
"Song BingLiu, already trying to impress the teachers?"
Liyu relaxed a little when Jing Yu seemed to be taking it well.
She immediately tensed again upon hearing this decision.
"Um, seafood is... Fish, right?"
