I don’t know much. I don’t know why I’m here. I don’t know why they keep me trapped in this room with white walls. I don’t know why they keep strapping me down to a flaming chair and leaving me there for days. I don’t know why I keep seeing things that aren’t there. But I do know my name, and my name is Zale. Today, today began like any other day. I woke up in my tank, my peaceful, familiar, friendly tank of utter silence. I didn’t need to open my eyes to know that it was them draining my tank that had awoken me; I would not have awoken otherwise. I felt it, the smooth sensation of the tank’s liquid, a solution as black as night, slipping past me and down the drain. I remained as I was, standing silently in a tank of rapidly disappearing fluid. It slipped past my eyes, then my shoulders, then my waist, but I did not open my eyes. Stubbornly, I clung onto the last few moments with the dark liquid, unwilling to leave until it was completely gone. The moment I felt the final dredges of the solution drip away, I opened my eyes. The room was white, unbearably white, terribly white. Everything was white. Everything, from the walls to the ceiling, was stark, pristinely clean, and stiflingly warm. It had nothing in it aside from my three pieces of ‘furniture;’ my tank, my flaming chair, and my chains on the wall. I slept in the tank whenever they told me to. At first, my sleeping schedule was erratic. They would alternate keeping me up for days on end to sending me off to sleep every couple minutes. It took a couple months, but I figured out the pattern quickly enough. On the side, there were a bunch of senseless words scribbled on a plate, pokè-this, pokè-that, and then the word “Zekrom.” So I named it Zekrom. Zekrom the tank. The chair was what kept the room so warm. Made of what they described as “synthetic metal,” the chair remained only slightly warm despite the searing flames constantly running up and down the thing. They would strap me to it everyday right before I went to the tank. It was agony, but it was only a few minutes before they would send me off to my tank, where I would be healed. When I’d leave the chair every night, I’d be covered in grotesque burns, but when I’d wake up in the morning, good as new. Zekrom was my best friend. The chains, they were for when I… failed to meet expectations. They called it ‘conditioning.’They would leave me there for hours, trapped against the sickeningly white walls, trapped against the white. That, that was worse than the chair. Although there was nothing abnormal against the wall, when I was trapped against it, I felt insubstantial, as if I was fading from existence. I wasn’t meant to dwell with the white. The white was harsh and bright and hot. I was born in the soft and dark and cold. I was born in the black. I had always hated white. But they didn’t care. To them, I was nothing else but an asset. A tool. An experiment. My handlers brought me out, two men dressed in- yep, you guessed it, white. They were the muscle of this little operation. On the few instances that I tried to retaliate, they would flip a switch on their arm and the room would began to fill up with liquid, not cool and black like mine, but horribly white, and burning to the touch. One drop of it, and I’d pass out. They only ever had to use it twice. I learned after that. One detached the oxygen tubes attached to my side while the other watched for any sudden movements. I shifted my wings a little bit, allowing a small current of electricity to pass through them, rejuvenating my senses. The handlers shifted uncomfortably at the blue arcs of lightning, but remained otherwise unaffected. A muffled voice from the handler’s mask, “Virus wants to see you.” It was a statement, not a question. “Well, then what are we waiting for?” I muttered grumpily, my voice crackling with the electricity coursing through my body. They grabbed hold of me, chaining my wings and arms together. I sank to my knees. and they took positions on either side of the room, ready to chain me against the wall at any time. And so began yet another typical day in my room. Or so I thought. [Read more] |
