Andrea’s laugh tinkled through the singularity “Thank you! I’ve been waiting for someone that wasn’t my sister to compliment me like that. Oh and I’m not sure how to break it to you sweetheart, but I do understand the question? You wanna know about the Masquerade.” Her head cocks to one side, her face morphing into one of faux hurt. “You know, if you want information, you really shouldn’t be insulting people. Calling me all those things really isn’t nice of you. Hey wait- didja say you’re willing to kill my sister for free? Really? Well, then thank you!!” Andrea giggles, smiling from ear to ear. She claps her hands, seemingly delighted by the thought. “I’m not loyal to anyone…so that’s wrong! They have no hold over me….so that’s wrong too! Oh how wonderfully funny you are! You suck at this game!” Like a little girl at her birthday party, Andrea giggles and claps, swaying from side to side. Upon hearing the third possibility, she drops her act, replying in a silky voice “Bravo! You’ve got a part of me figured out. Granted, I do enjoy seeing people suffer, but that’s not why I’m not telling you anything, silly! If I’m the villain, I wouldn’t give these things away willingly, would I? Or should I wrap a full video recording of my confession in a pretty box with pretty packaging, tie it up and hand it to you as a present?”

Leaning close to Jack, Andrea spat out “I sold my own sister in the auction, what makes you think I would want to help stop your beloveds from being sold in the auction? You’re such a fool, Jackery Soot. Destined for greatness but yet….heh. Never mind.”

Her voice changes from venomous to taunting, as she continues “Go ahead and attack then, if it makes you feel better about what you did- or rather failed to do. Whatever you do to me, deep down you know it’s all your fault. You couldn’t protect them, you couldn’t be there for them, and at this rate we’re going….I don’t think you can save them. Tsk tsk Prefect Soot, what would poor little Sera say if she saw you this crazy? Dear me, she would be terrified to bits! Poor little cloud girl Sera. Her role model and mother figure became a pathetic twisted psychopath just like me!”

She pauses for a moment, as if in contemplation. “I will tell you that Sera, Kendo and whoever else the Masquerade has kidnapped will be on the auction list by now. In a while’s time they’ll be sold. If you can do something for me……then I’ll take you to where you need to go. But only you, and one other person can do this task for me. And I will only bring you, and that person to where you so desire. Come on Jack. You’re smart. Truth or lie is up for you to decide. Whether you want to take up my offer- the best bet now by the way, is your gamble. So….what will it be? Time’s ticking~”

Andrea hums to herself. “You’re not wrong about my sister. But there’s something so special about the bond between us that refrains her from telling you everything. Deeper than anything, than flesh, than blood or bone. We swore an oath when we were young. Breaking it would result in her death so I wouldn’t be surprised that she can’t tell you too much. But I agree, she’s quite stupid.” Tapping her chin thoughtfully, she rocks herself on the balls of her feet, bouncing to some rhythm. “I honestly don’t give a damn whether you trust me or my sister. But I will admit, that dimwit’s more observant than I thought. I never knew she had noticed the similarities between the symbols on the uniforms of the Masquerade and the necklace I gave her. A mistake on my part, I suppose.” She pauses, throws the lollipop stick away and continues. “But no matter. That was me in the past. The young me thought the Masquerade was pretty cool, that’s all.” Her lie was smooth, reassuring and almost believable, honeyed words rolling off her tongue in a faux warm voice.

Backing away slightly, she fixes Jack with a curious gaze. “You know, you and Jasmine aren’t all that different, really. You may mot like it, but you two share a lot in common. Seraphiel is useless and pathetic, and Kendo is nothing more than a distraction. And you are no better. You’re worthless, unable to help them. How could you let Kendo lead you astray? I saw you two in the garden, you make me SICK. And because you’re so ridiculously incompetent and misty eyed, you failed to protect Sera. Didn’t you?” Her voice grows more and more venomous, and a snap of her fingers tells them both the Andrea had realised and removed the distortion.

She gets on her knees in front of Jack, palms up in surrender. Like Jack, she too bore a face of insanity. Looking up through her raven black hair, her face splits into her grin. “Kill me then Jack. What use do I have to resist? Naturally, you, like you’ve already so kindly told me, are more powerful than I ever will be. Though I will not go down easily. I prefer a cowardly act of running and hiding. You know, cat and mouse, playing with your prey and things like that? But before you kill me, I would like to say this. Jasmine cannot break her oath, therefore the only information you will get from the Masquerade is from me. Kill me, and that chance is gone. Yes, sure; find another solution elsewhere! Go hunt them down! But I assure you, it will be too late. By then everyone and everything you’ve ever held dear will perish, and I sure as hell will be there to laugh at you when that happens, even if I have no more physical body.”

“So princess. Are you really willing to gamble the love of your life and the cloud girl? To be sold at a slave auction?I’ll tell you honestly, the best life to live is with no attachment. Life is nothing more than a game of chess, whereby you are the queen and everyone else is your pawn. No one else should matter apart from you. I learnt that the hard way. Oh, and be prepared. Truth serums won’t work on me, neither will mind reading. Unfortunately for you, I predicted this all too well.” She holds up a small picture, which clearly displayed some sort of device embedded behind her eyeball. “Should you try to probe into my mind, this will completely fry and wipe my mind of anything you could ever need. Granted it comes at the cost of my life and others, but I’m more than happy to drag as many people down as I can.”

Andrea’s face turns down into a pout. “I don’t like it when people are so angry…it’s not good for any of us here, you know? Especially when my own life is being threatened! Oh dear me, I must have done something bad, hehe~” She flips around, lollipop in hand as she hung upside down, swinging dangerously close to Jack then back to rest. She hops off like a bat from her perch, properly facing Jack. “Eh. But fire away, I suppose. There’s nothing wrong with having a pleasant chat.”

Upon seeing Jasmine stomp past her, Andrea realised that Jasmine had done…well..something. She didn’t know what, but yet something told her that Jasmine had made sure she would end up in trouble sooner or later. With a quick and apologetic farewell to Eris, the girl fled the scene. She twisted her hand, spreading her finger wide, palms up. The sky seemed to flicker for just a fraction of a second, and then Andrea disappeared. She had hidden herself in the cold void between worlds, broken the rules and landed herself somewhere in the midst of a singularity. Whatever had happened, Andrea didn’t feel like getting involved, especially not as a stupid villain.

Unfortunately for her, in her rush, she had left an entrance to the singularity, a supposed distortion in the hallway walls. If one were to look hard enough, that is. And it just so happened, that the wall was just in front of Jack……

her body was warm, shimmering skin aglow
with dark brown hair and eyes black as coal
her dainty hands clasped around that bear
as she held my gaze with her piercing stare
i crooned softly as she rose from her bed
“come on sweetheart, time to play”
and then we went together
to the stables near the creek
there she picked out a horse so sweet
I helped her get on, and we rode for miles
across the starry sky that had no bounds
and when we were done
we lay to rest
amongst the lily fields to catch our breath
then the weeping willow extended her loving arms
welcome, little one, to the world of stars

weak hacking coughs, a bluish nightgown
and a frail arm clutches the fresh bouquet
the other arm, occupied.
a limp figure in hand
the glass vase shatters
the shards soar above her head
but still the hand clutches a thorny rose
the thorns pierce her pale snowy skin
deep red a contrast to her fair skin tone
the curtains close, the stage light dims
and lo, with a cry, she opens her mouth
“this is my swan song”
the last words she spoke
her final breath
as all the feathers turn black
tattered and torn like that a rodent had gnawed
with thorny white roses that dripped a dee p blood red
the puppet strings break
as strong and fragile as a spider web
yet….not enough
and the performer takes her final bow
hear the angels sing
their sweet soft lullaby
and the little babe, in a deep sleep.
the grubby pens, the crayons
oh those little stubs
the coloring books, seemingly untouched
yet falling apart, and rotting rather fast
everything wasting away at its touch
the soft padded shoes
the matching white dress
the babe lets out not a single sound
like a calm lily field
the night birds chirp
and the flowers sway gently in the breeze
Finally, finally,
mother and daughter reunite at last

Jasmine raises an eyebrow at Mercader, but doesn’t retort. “I’m sorry about Sera and Kendo, Jack. I know how it feels.” Her voice wavers slightly at the end, but her face remains emotionless. She gives the Mercader one last stare, as if curious to find out what he was thinking about. She then leaves him and Jack in the hallway, praying that the Mercader would not misunderstand her.

Jasmine glances at Jack, contemplating for a moment before speaking. “You see, I noticed the supposed uniform that the Masquerade wore. Coincidentally, I have the exact same replica in the form of a necklace. Guess who gave it to me? My beloved sister, Andrea.” She removes the necklace around her neck, holding it out for them to examine. “I’m not accusing Andrea of being part of the Masquerade, but due to the…previous….tragedy that I faced, something tells me she knows something about it, however little.”

Lifei heads straight for the library, using her magic to create a floating cloud for her to sit on. She hovers through bookshelves, her eyes glancing at the titles, trying to find the one that she desired. She spots it soon enough, taking it out of its place on the shelf. Lowering herself into a comfy chair, she snaps her fingers and the cloud disappears. She props herself up, flips open the book and begins to read. A small rock golem, no higher than her waist, was patrolling the area around her, as if daring someone to interrupt her reading.

Jasmine, meanwhile, concentrates on training. Field experience was something she didn’t have much of, and she wanted to make sure she wasn’t lacking in any area. Setting the training course to “most difficult”, she jumps through the obstacle course gracefully, flicking her wrist to hit every single target precisely with a throwing knife, all in the same position. Second wave, she swapped out her blades for magic, using her own blood to create sharp shards that she launched at them, tearing into the skin of the dummies, raining down like hailstones. This went on for a while, till the simulation was complete. She plopped down on the mat, huffing as she recovered her energy.

Jack could ignore Jasmine all she wanted, but when Jasmine had set her mind to do something, there was nothing that would stop her. She pursued Jack, almost crashing into the Mercader. She skids to a break, catches her breath before straightening and facing him. “I do believe I have information of use, Mercader. Unfortunately, Prefect Soot ran away before I could tell her. Information regarding the Masquerade, however little, will be of benefit to us, don’t you think?”

Andrea smiles gratefully at Eris, before looking worriedly at the spot where Sera had disappeared. “Think cloud girl will be okay? I’m guessing she probably went where Kendo went, but unlike Kendo, I’m not sure if she can really handle herself. She seems fragile…”

Andrea stood back to back with Eris, the two fighting the black mages, blasting ice at them, but taking up a defensive stance. Once they got the situation under control, Andrea huffed gratefully. It was only then she noticed more students were missing. Turning to Eris, she asks. “Where’s that cloud girl?”

Upon seeing the black mages, Jasmine lashes out, attacking with all her might. As she got closer to one of them, she noticed something, and immediately her eyes turned furious. When the battle was over, she leapt over to where Andrea was, slapped her harshly and hissed something into her ear, before throwing her another venomous look and leaping over to Jack, somehow catching up with the speedy girl. “Oi! Jackery Soot, am I right? New prefect? I want to tell you something!”

Andrea gracefully sidestepped the light spirits as they whizzed past her, dazed by Lydia’s frying pan attacks. She takes out several throwing knives, slicing any spirit who tried to come too close. Her attacks are light and quick, and she never once stumbles, gracefully pirouetting through a particularly condensed swarm of spirits. And then a particularly flashy display of attacks cornered some of the light spirits into a clump. She gestures to Lydia, saying “Go on. Perfectly smashable, and fairly efficient. If I continue rounding them up, and you smash them I’m sure we’ll kill them off soon enough”

Andrea gently tugs on Eris’s kimono sleeve, standing up. “We should go. To whatever place he’s talking about. If all classes are cancelled for the foreseeable future then I think it’s safe to assume something absolutely disastrous has happened.”
