For the second time, Athena almost lost her balance, using her hands to steady herself. "Why're you here!?" An inexplainable surge of anger rose up, giving her a sudden burst of energy. Leaping off the bed and whirling on him, her eyes glinted in a way which made most people back away immediately. "Why did you have to be on the roof yesterday!? What were you thinking!?" These questions she may as well have been asking herself.

*Timeskip to morning*

"WAKE UP! GET UP! CLASES START IN TWO HOURS! ORIENTATION IS FIRST! MAIN HALL, DON'T BE LATE!" The Minders were here again, dragging the drowsy students out of bed. Most students had completely conked out after the previous day's activities, and were struggling to rub the sleep from their eyes.

Athena watched blankly as the students slowly arose. The Minders hadn't bothered her, but she was up. Had been for the whole night. Exhaustion wasn't a thing anymore. Sitting crosslegged with her gaze unfocused, she showed no sign of planning to move anytime soon.

Athena was in a state of panic. She was going crazy. While trying to not go crazy. Did I mention she was panicking? She was pretty much tearing her hair out. She'd decided to return to her dorm, and somehow managed, despite her balance having been thrown out of whack.

It was her fault. This school was not like the others. She'd let her guard down. And now everything was going wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Completely wrong.

"First of all, niñeta isn't a word." Athena jumped, almost losing her footing. "Secondly, do I look out of my zone?" Giving up on balance and sitting down, she crossed her legs and tried to ignore Kendo's presence. There was one sudden moment of clarity before the panic set in. She'd been spotted. By a student. Who was no doubt going to tattle. Who wouldn't? In all the scenarios she'd imagined her cover being blown, being followed(?) by a student definitely wasn't one of them. And she was careless this time. Thinking her senses would alert her, when she was off floating around in her daydreams.

Trying - and failing - to cover up her crazy turmoil of thoughts for what was going to happen next. She couldn't push him off the roof, could she? Even if she wanted to. She couldn't magic his memories away. That was messy. ~~There was a story about it somewhere, about a girl who looked suspiciously like her...~~ And he had strong defences. She also didn't see how threatening him would work...

Athena quickly dropped everything off in her dorm, cast a quick illusion spell to make it seem like she was in bed, then proceeded to leap out the window which was conveniently right next to her bed. Her space was slightly larger than the other student's, tucked into a corner at the edge of the dorm. This was the closest to normal treatment she could get, and the extra space would prove useful. In future. Noooootttttt that she would know that.

Letting herself relax into her routine habit of checking out the school grounds, leaping from roof to roof, blasting a wayward Minder with some harmless flames, she couldn't help thinking back to the feeling she'd felt when fighting the beasts. It was different from triumph when a prank was successful, more energising, more alive. There was just no way to put it into words.

The Headmistress clapped her hands. Four beasts, owned by the house leaders, materlised out of thin air. Roaring and whinying and screeching. A Kraken, a Siren, a Unicorn, and a Wyvern. The Kraken looked quite silly on land, and all the creatures had to be shrunk down to fit into the still tight space. But they were imposing all the same.

Athena stepped forwards, and they leapt at her almost at once. And then she was slashing, dodging, leaping, ducking. Generally trying not to get shredded to pieces. Where'd the misconception that unicorns were friendly creatures come from!?

But there was a strange rush of excitement. Like-like the feeling of being truly alive. Like she was seeing, and feeling, the world as it truly was for the first time.

Then, one by one, the beasts settled down. First came the Siren, then the Unicorn. The Kraken and Wyvern were still quite intent on killing her. Then, bit by bit, the Wyvern calmed, and settled regally on the sidelines.

The Kraken charged her. How it could move so fast, was a mystery for centuries to come. Athena crouched, waiting for the beast to approach. A lasso of fire appeared in her hands. 30 metres, 20, 10... With a running leap, Athena flung her lasso with all her strength, and swung onto the Krakens 'back'. The Kraken roared, and struggled, almost throwing her off, but she held strong.

Then it was over. The beasts gave her respectful farewells, the Unicorns slightly more affectionate, and they vanished. The teachers and Headmistress were completely smiling at her now, and the leader of Riparian stood up and walked over.

"Welcome to Riparian."

All these great interactions were interrupted by the Minders, selected students, usually teacher's pets, who kept the students in line more or less, gave announcements from the teachers, made the wake up call, and controlled curfew. They patrolled around the school, rounding up any stray students back to their respective dorms, and marched into the common rooms, with all their Minder-ly glory. Special badges and quill and parchment to record misbehavers, etc. They were unpopular, of course, but listened to. No one wanted to get into trouble with the school.

"EVERYONE! OFF TO BED! EARLY CURFEW! DON'T WANT TO BE LATE TO THE FIRST DAY OF CLASSES, DO YOU? WELL? HURRY UP THEN!"

Students tripped eachother up rushing into the dorms. Whatever passionate feeling they had earlier was quickly evaporated.

While all these interactions were going on, Athena was quite busy with something else.

She'd watched as the students left, before turning to the podium. Only the podium was no longer there. Instead, there were six chairs surrounding a coffee table, which was laden with pastries and drinks. Four of the chairs were decorated with the house colours and dragons, and one with the main emblem of the Institute. The house leaders and Headmistress were settled in them, watching her expectantly.

Confidently striding up and taking the sixth chair, the Headmistress spoke almost as soon as she sat down. "Do make yourself comfortable and grab some refreshments, though you won't have much time to enjoy them. You've got quite a task ahead of you." Then they were in the air, the table and chairs suspended by invisible chains, and whisked off with a sharp jerk out through the door, which opened and closed automatically. They sped away over the school grounds, finally floating gently to the ground in an empty sandy arena style clearing. Spectator stands ringed the space.

Athena was barely fazed by this journey. She'd seen it multiple times. Usually as a party trick. But taking in her surroundings, she couldn't help but let out a gasp. The teachers were looking at her, nodding and smiling slightly. "You seem to know what's going on. Well then, good luck."

Then the sorting abruptly ended. The students looked on expectantly, but it was clear there was no more to come. Athena Luminia Lediana had not been sorted.

"Now now, off to your dorms then. Go on, don't want to be late for the first day of lessons, do you?" The Headmistress made a shooing kind of gesture at the students. Reluctantly, they turned to go. "Miss Lediana, stay back a moment, will you?"

{House List:
Red and Yellow - The house dedicated to those noble and loyal with hearts of gold. They would be willing to sacrifice anything and everything if it means that their loved ones are safe. Always looking to do the greater good. Can seem slightly proud or stuck-up at times, or maybe the teacher's pet.

Blue and Green - The house of those who aspire to complete any challange or task at hand, No matter how difficult. They will climb to the top of the ranks even if it means they have to cheat sometimes. Usually calm and calculated, commonly found guilty behind many of the school 'scandals'.

Pink and Purple - The house of those with imaginative dreams. The members of this house are often found to be sleepy at times but that doesn't mean they dont have an undying passion for any form of art. There have been whispers that this house is for "petty little girls", but the members of this house have proven themselves many times over.

Black and White - The house of those who love the craft of music. The house itself is kind of a giant opera house, decked with many instruments that the students may use. Don't be fooled though, the rules here are extremely strict. Students practice deligerently, and many are apt at music related magic.

"Thank you all for your patience!" The Headmistress stood up and clapped her hands, making the trays of food disappear, much to the disappointment of most students. "You will have time to feast later. Now, the results of the sorting..."

Athena tuned out most of it, she'd get to know everyone later. Her name hadn't been called yet, they were taking quite a while to get to her.

Then, suddenly all the darkness disappaited. There was a collective gasp as a lone figure stood at the center of a shining ring of light. Athena gave a little curtsy and returned her sword to her sheath.

The figures on the podium, teachers, murmured to one another. Students whispered. Then the woman stood up again and smiled at Athena. "It seems you have ended the sorting. Well done." Then she lifed her chin and addressed all the students. "Results will be announced shortly. In the meantime, please enjoy these refreshments." A floating tray of pastries and colourful drinks appeared in front of each student.

Athena gave a light smile to Julian. Interesting. So this was who she'd be up against. They were quite well matched, she knew from training. She found his attraction of attention quite annoying at times, always the perfect one. Not saying she wasn't, she just didn't flaunt it. Getting noticed, but not too much. She had her fair share of fame. Anyways, she was still going to win. But no need for hostility, she continued to stick to her friendly persona.

Already, she could hear the whispers in people's minds as they betted on who was going to win. It was a hard choice for them. Both were able, charming, and top picks for the games. Both were eager to win. Most decided on Julian in the end, not particularly surprising, and she couldn't care less. That just meant they were about to be disappointed.

Athena felt quite elated. This was actually fun, in a way. Just lacking some opponents. She could slash things without worrying about someone finding out. As if right on cue, a monstrous shadow-tree-with-hands thing materialized next to her. There were a few screams from other students. Rolling her eyes, she stabbed it and watched as it dissolved into shadow. A couple more were appearing, but she quickly took them down, all while freeing more others.
