Athena, you made him upset.
Messing up your life is bad enough, why'd you have to go and mess up other's?

Why? Why're you all so obsessed with him? What sets him apart from the others?

He didn't deserve that. He has his own troubles.
You messed up! You made him upset, why shouldn't you feel guilty about that!?
You should treat him just like everyone else. Wouldn't you be upset if you upset anyone?

Just. Why!?

"I'm really sorry! I didn't hear anything!" Athena yelled after Kendo, not sure whether he'd heard or not.

Excusing herself quickly, she dashed through the school, almost knocking over some poor students, and climbed up a ladder to the roof in a couple of leaps. Leaning against a chimney, she closed her eyes and broke down completely, sobs racking her body.

Her fault. All her fault.

Trust her luck to walk into the training grounds at that exact moment. At once the cheerfulness evaporated, and Athena stood rooted to the spot, staring at Jack and Kendo and the newcomer. Breathe. Just act normal. You SHOULD be acting normal.

{Tiny needed(?) explanation:
Athena can sense blood magic around Kendo. But she doesn't know it. So he irritates her incredibly. So she's acting very strange and unusual.}

Athena faintly heard the screams. Saw the teacher hurry out of the room and dismiss the class. Felt herself drift out of the classroom. Smiled at some students. Promised to meet them during break. Back to her dorm. Lock the door. Sit and stare out the window. Just watching the world go by.

Ok, seriously, snap out of it! You're just going to make it worse for yourself sitting here and sulking.
I'm not sulking!

Even her own brain was trying to kill her.

Heaving and sigh and pushing herself to her feet, she went to find some of the earlier students who promised her a tour of the school. She didn't really need it, but it was refreshing to laugh and chat, if only for a while.

Athena headed to class, and maintained her usual cheerfulness, on the outside, at least. But if you probed just a little deeper, it was quite obvious her mind was somewhere else.

She'd started the year all wrong. It was hard to separate blunders from honest mistakes. Letting her guard down was a blunder. Shouting at Kendo... That one was harder. She'd gotten rusty from not being challenged for so long. But she also shouldn't have been so easily provoked. Then there was just now, which was simply embarassing.
It was a fact that Kendo frustrated her. There was something about him, which both drew her to him and pushed her away. Something she couldn't figure out.
She needed to stop getting distracted, and to concentrate on the task at hand. Stop worrying about Kendo. And preferably find a way to treat him like a normal person.
And she needed to check her diplomatic skills.

"Thanks... I guess I better go." Walking as fast as she could and then sprinting out of the training grounds, Athena arrived back at her dorm in a matter of seconds. She didn't stop to take a breath till she was safely inside, the door locked and barricaded. Then she collapsed on her bed and stared up at the ceiling of swirling flourescent light.

The frustration was steadily rising. Finally, it completely broke loose. Holding up a hand to tell Jack to stop, she half stalked, half dragged herself over to him. And then just stood there awkwardly.

Something was prickling at the back of her mind. Some tiny wisp of memory. That she could reach but not quite hold. She clawed at it desperately, but everytime she tried, the wisp seemed to evaporate, then solidify again.

Kendo just irritated her so much. So very much. She had no reason to dislike him, and it wasn't really dislike she was feeling. Nor annoyance. Or worry or distrust. And no, before you ask, she didn't like him. Not in the least.

She couldn't figure it out. And she hated that.

Despite her efforts, Athena's mind was starting to wander ever so slightly. Trying to find a way to phrase her apology to Kendo. Who was so conveniently just standing and staring at her. Which made it even harder to think. Which caused her to stumble slightly, almost getting hit by a blast of fire. Which just heightened her efforts to think of an apology. She knew she couldn't concentrate till that was done. And for some reason, it seemed so hard. So much harder than it was to apologise to the villagers, to the students, even to her parents. Maybe it was the lingering panic. Or maybe it was Kendo himself. Something was... Off. About him.

	Dodging was pretty much second nature to her, but after yesterday, she knew she couldn't afford to be careless. Just because she was good at something didn't mean she could slack off when doing it. It was slightly disappointing that this didn't have the same thrill as fighting with the beasts. But she'd get there. She'd find a way. [Read more]

"Ducking and dodging would be first instinct. You could put out the flames or possibly even grasp them under your will, but by then it could be too late. Flames block vision though, and if you could launch a sneak attack in some way you could use that to your advantage. Personally I'd attack then, and use my opponent's concentration on the flames as a distraction. Could be magic from the other side, or just rush at them." Or use my wings.

	There was a rush of bodies as students hurried to check the list, and find their partner in the sea of people. Athena dodged and pushed her way to the front, and smiled slightly upon seeing she'd been put with Jack. From what she knew, Jack was an excellent teacher. "Siiilence!" The chatter quieted down and all eyes turned to the Headmistress. "Thank you. "Welcome, officially, to your first day of classes! I hope you find them enjoyable, along with the rest of the year..."

Athena tuned out after that, trusting her subconcious to record any important bits of information. But she didn't expect there to be any. She was to be proven wrong.

"... This year, we'll be doing something a bit different! We're going to have partners! Each new student will be asigned an older partner and mentor to guide them, they will be in special classes and work together on their projects. Partner lists can be found on the notice board as soon as Orientation is over."

And the rest was useless again. Just the usual reminders to stay on the school grounds, follow the Minder's instructions, etc.

	She saw him come in, and shrunk down in her chair, even though she just looked silly. Pulling herself up again, she pretended she never saw him, looking in the other direction and humming slightly. The Headmistress was getting ready. Orientation was extremely important. She had to make a strong impression on the students, and hopefully there would be no interruptions this year. [Read more]

As much as she would've liked to slam the door to her room and sulk all day, life must go on. Dragging herself to orientation and forcing herself to act friendly and cheerful, as everyone expected, Athena sighed and took a seat in the Main Hall.

Kendo didn't know her story. He had no right to pretend he did. But she had probably overreacted. It wasn't like the students didn't know her secret reputation of undercover pranks and tricks. She'd panicked thinking Kendo would tell, when she really didn't have any proof. And the fact that he was on the roof further supported the idea that she could trust him. At least for the time being. So... It really was her fault for shouting at him. He could have been nicer about it, but anyone would have reacted the same way.

Guess she owed someone an apology.
