Though taken aback and shocked at his sudden transformation, the sixteen year old realized she was being left behind and would soon loose the man- fox- creature? if she didn't hurry. The tails made her think he was maybe one of the kitsune from the stories, though she'd always thought they had nine tails. That book that the girl Eria had may have some information about it, but Cres didn't think there would be time to check at the moment. She also didn't really want to have to ask the other girl if she could see it; some people got defensive about that sort of thing.

She turned around before continuing, checking to see if the others were coming. Would they want to follow him? What would she do if they decided to stay? What would he do? Would he get upset? It seemed like he'd been the one to start the raging storm she was currently just standing in; if he could do that and they got on his bad side by disobeying...

She glanced back at the painting he'd left behind. It seemed sad to leave it out to be destroyed in the rain. Deciding she wouldn't go without the consent of the other girls, she hurried to roll up the canvas and tuck it under her arm vertically. It wasn't much, but she hoped she could protect the art from the downpour at least a little.

Cres jumped a mile high at the crash of the bolt of electricity. There wasn't much use trying to hide from the torrential downpour, as she was already getting closer and closer by the second to being able to say she was completely soaked, but all the same, she lifted her hood over her head.

She was immensely skeptical; the man had seemed to notice her necklace. Due to the fact he knew it held some importance, he could either be an enemy or a friend. Cres was usually more inclined to believe the first, but currently they had no leads as to where or what to do to do as the Voices had asked. Besides, even though she was a bit frightened by his eyes and morphing hand, the man seemed to give off a strangely benevolent air, at least in her mind. Steeling herself for whatever may come, she gave a small nod and stepped forwards a little, not sure about the others but ready to go. At least if he attacked her with flowers she could deal with it.

Uh oh. So standing still was no longer in the cards. Alright. So jobs, jobs. What sort of jobs did a thief do? Peregrine felt like he may not realize that she was there, but when he did, and inevitably he would, not making eye contact would be suspicious, but if she did it might draw attention, offend the man, give away that she shouldn't even be there in the first place, or a combination of all three. Maybe she'd be better off to just nod in the direction of the thief lady and appear to busily stride away in the opposite direction, preferably before he reached her.

As she walked cooly away, trying to exude as much confidence and give of an air of "I know what I'm doing" as possible, her mind couldn't help but linger on the woman's choice of a name, despite the approaching man. What was the X for? The whole moniker sounded strangely foreign to her ears. She did hate spiders.

Slipping down the side of the hole, across the ceiling of the alcove at the bottom, and down the wall into the darkened area behind Vlad, Mahogany stepped out of his shadow as easily as simply stepping forwards. He didn't want to speak right away so as to not draw too much attention to himself, but he also didn't want to come across creepy. When the others saw him, they may assume he'd been standing there the whole time and had just remained still and silent.

While the Shade classification did have a bit of a stereotype surrounding it, that being a sort of dark and brooding sense, that really wasn't who he himself was. While the occasional light hearted jump scare could be fun with the younger Protectors and he tended to be more of a listener than a talker in group meetings, he preferred to have the majority of his cards on the table. Or at least the important cards. The cards he thought it would benefit others to see? That metaphor had always been a bit lost on him; if your cards were on the table, didn't that mean you were giving others exactly the information needed to win against you?

He decided that he'd likely given it long enough. "Have we checked around the walls? Puzzles may be the type of thing found here." On a whim, he rubbed the back of his neck as if it were sore. A little thing, but Mahogany couldn't act to save his own life and therefore felt a tiny bit proud at having thought of it, though he knew how silly that was.

Once again, Mahogany’s unpredictable instincts kicked in and, as he found himself falling, he shifted into a shadow. He watched the others fall past him as he remained in place on the side of the hole. As usual, he still saw the world in 3-D, though he himself was now 2-D. It was as if he saw the world from the perspective of a sheet of paper with eyes that bulged out a little. Movement in this form was a bit strange, and it had taken him quite some time to get the hang of it. His body reacted to his brain just as his if he were still a physical human, and to him moving felt no different, with the exception that seemingly defying gravity was now possible.

Turning downwards and diagonal, the shadow proceeded to jog down the wall. The fall looked to have actually been rather short, and he could see the others gathered at the bottom. He would have been fine if he’d not reacted so suddenly. Perhaps if he could slip in behind them quickly, he could maintain secrecy. If not, though, it was beginning to seem like less of a big deal.

All of this was nearly too much for Mahogany to compute. An “Inferno” inhabiting a human, a boy turning a watch into a much larger bow and also talking about ancient gods like they were real… The only thing that was familiar to him in any way was the blob creature. No, he’d never seen anything quite like it, but it seemed to him like a Shade classification Valoi, something he was quite used to. They were what he was a Protector of, after all. He was quite intrigued by the strange purple man’s description, however, and the girl’s mention of her history tugged at his heart.

Parent drama wasn’t uncommon with his group of friends; a surprising number of them had had difficult, grief-filled childhoods. Supposedly that had made them more sympathetic and therefore better at their job. Still, none had anything quite like that. He wanted to give the girl a hug, but he wasn’t sure whether that would be welcome or not.

“Oh, poker’s interesting. Never tried it myself.” He shook his head immediately after speaking. What was wrong with him, trying to make friendly conversation in this place? It was one thing to be upbeat and chipper going into a fight in an attempt to make his companions feel at ease, but here it really wasn’t appropriate. “Er, yeah, getting a move on does sound like a good plan.”

He had no clue what the boy who reminded him of Tempest was on about.

Cres’s eyes widened as she noticed the man’s more inhuman traits. She was so, so tempted to ask what species he was, but that really did seem like a very rude question. Something about his words made a sense of sadness creep in, the smile she’d been trying to maintain slipping into a rather somber expression. She glanced away, hand clasping the amulet around her neck. She’d not had it for long, but something about it made her feel rather secure, if that was the right word. “Er, no, no reason. Just curiosity.”

Crescent nodded. I wasn't wrong! That's one step in the right direction, I guess. "Oh, I have heard of them!" That was just a slight understatement. She wanted to ask him whether he knew what was going on with the dragons nowadays, but that seemed like taking it a bit too far. The man may not actually even believe they existed, as many did. She herself had always been a bit of a believer in ghost stories and myths, though she preferred to focus on the nice ones instead of those that were all blood and gore and death to all mankind. All the same, she needed to say something.

"I really love hearing the stories. Is there a particular one being told in your art?" she asked. The question was surprisingly articulate; she wasn't quite sure where it had come from. It was a pleasant surprise, but she knew she'd likely slip into her usual verbal blundering soon.

Nodding politely to the man and, moving three feet to the side of the boy in front of him, the nineteen-year-old said, "Mahogany Lake. A pleasure." He forced a sense of calm that he certainly didn't feel into his tone in hopes of helping put the others maybe slightly more at ease. He knew he certainly wasn't the oldest, the man, Vlad, was definitely his senior, but it was a force of habit to act as such. Caly often laughed that he acted five years older than he was. He supposed he'd picked it up largely due to the age gap between himself and his two younger sisters; he was 10 years older than the youngest of the two, a span he alternately loved and hated.

Mahogany blinked and tried to shake the sunspot-like flares out of his eyes as the other boy nearly ran over him. He didn't even seen to notice him. That was when he realized he'd accidentally done what he'd been trying to avoid. In an involuntary defense mechanism, he'd vanished into simply a shadow on the wall he had been standing just beside; the shift in perspective had been masked to him when he'd shut his eyes against the light from the fire. It must have happened just moments after he'd called out to the girl.

He hoped he hadn't been seen by any of the others. It was annoying when this sort of thing happened, but he usually reassured himself with the knowledge that he wasn't the only Protector who struggled with disabling their abilities. Whenever Cedar ventured into the forest, all sorts of greenery sprung up in his footsteps if he wasn't careful, and that was only the tip of the iceberg. Sometimes when Cres reached out to touch something, her hand would phase right through the object. It had been funny at first, but by this point he could tell it got on her nerves. However, now this was seriously inconvenient for him. Quickly slipping back out of the shadow and into physical form once more, Mahogany rushed after the black haired boy, following him back to the gathering of people.

Mahogany's eyes widened in horror. What sort of Valoi did they have here? He couldn't even begin to imagine which classification this one would fall into. Perhaps Flame, as that was all he could think of as the fire roared forth from its maw. Fleeing into what he could only assume was a convoluted myriad of torturous and tortuous passageways didn't seem like the best idea, however, and despite his earlier decision, he was still reluctant.

Shaking himself, he noticed the peculiar alien-like creature's glance, then its dart towards a very young boy. Despite its odd looks, Mahogany determined he was willing to risk allying himself with him. He then noticed a black haired boy who looked about his own age; he couldn't help but think he looked somewhat like Tempest, and already the longing for home set in. Mahogany wasn't a particularly skilled fighter without his abilities, which he still wished to avoid utilizing. Lark and Reed, despite being 4 years his junior and not even Protectors, both were able to best him in combat training when he gave himself that handicap. Reconnaissance, stealth missions, and the occasional good-natured spying at the behests of the ever-mischievous Breeze and Tundra were his fortitude. He doubted he'd be much use in this environment unless he used them, but he wasn't willing to put that level of trust in these people yet.

However, Mahogany reckoned he was in agreement with the girl who had battled the monster. He hurried to where the group had collected, having mostly watched events without even moving or attempting to help, a wallflower habit he'd picked up due to just how often he did use his powers. He had a ton of questions regarding how she'd seemingly used the ability of a Scrablame, but those didn't quite seem logical to pursue in the moment. "Is this everyone here?" he asked, half not even expecting an answer as he glanced around the room, preparing for whatever struggles for life they all might face ahead. There seemed to be a relatively small number of people trapped alongside him; he guessed that was a good thing for those enigmatic someones who now didn't have to be there, but a smaller number of people meant they'd have a harder time in fights, and one of those people was a child who didn't even look to be 10 and was currently unconscious.

Even if anyone had intended to respond to him, that wouldn't have been able to occur due to the girl's rapid superheating of the room. He flinched away from the sweltering heat but didn't move away; despite his attempt to convince himself that he couldn't put anything between himself and getting home, he still wasn't able to deal with the notion of leaving others behind. Mahogany had had enough experience with Tye spontaneously bursting into flames to know not to attempt to touch the girl to help her up, though he wasn't sure if the abilities she was displaying worked the same as his friend's. However, as the heat continued to increase, he reckoned he would need to move soon. "Hey, let's go!" he called, raising his hand to his brow in an attempt to guard his face.

Everything hurt. Mahogany fought every instinct to bolt upwards and look around. Something didn't seem right and it was clear he was no longer in his comfortable bed in the giant tree he and his closest friends called home; he would gain more by remaining calm and moving slowly than by panicking. Thanks to his long exposure to Caly and her dictionary-like knowledge, the precise definition of "labyrinth" played in his head like a radio, complete with his best friend's voice; "a complicated irregular network of passages or paths in which it is difficult to find one's way; a maze." "Alternatively a complex structure in the inner ear..." he recalled her having added. Well, he guessed he likely wasn't laying on his back inside someone's inner ear alongside what sounded like multiple other people, so he was willing to go with that first definition.

Opening his eyes just a sliver, wide enough only to see the blurry outlines of something like five or six other people, he registered a female voice's message, and the situation became immediately more dire. While he tried to hope for the best, that perhaps he wasn't about to be thrown into what sounded like a death trap, Mahogany had never been a particularly optimistic person. If death was what was on the line here, he may as well risk becoming more alert.

Opening his eyes fully and sitting up, he glanced around at the others in the room with him. A mix of desperation and gratitude pricked at his chest. None of the other Protectors were there. He just hoped they were still safely back home. Would they wake up and find him missing? He didn't get the sense this was some twisted dream; it somehow felt like the type of haze brought by heatstroke and yet too vivid and stark to be anything other than reality. There didn't even seem to be much use in attempting to pinch himself at this point.

The longer Mahogany listened to whomever had been speaking, the more something seemed off about her. When she responded to the strange-looking person, if the horned purple thing could be called a person, a chill ran down Mahogany's spine. It took him a moment to process her words, but once he did, he quickly yet rather silently slipped into a standing position, back pressed against the wall. He wasn't sure whether to heed her words or not, but his instinct was to shepherd the other people there on ahead of him if he did do as she laughingly proposed. With the exception of her, a strangely silent man, and an odd black thing that almost looked like a Valoi of some sort, he got the sense that the others there were in the same position as he.

Fear bubbling in his chest, he determined two things. Firstly, he would run. He would help the others if he had to, but his first priority had to be to survive, to get home. Crescent had come back to him; it was his turn to come back to her. Secondly, he wouldn't reveal his abilities unless he absolutely had to, if he still had access them, that was. It hadn't taken long at all for enemies to develop ways to negate and nullify the Protectors' powers; these people may have similar technology. Even if he still could wield them, he knew it would likely be for the best to conceal them. He didn't get the sense these people meant him well.

Though the distance from Sanderson Field Airport to the Taylor's house was only about 1 hour and 25 minutes, Cam and Colt had deliberately told the family they'd be arriving at 10:30, about 2 hours after the latter's flight had landed. Surprisingly, they were perfectly on time. Colt unclipped his seatbelt as they pulled into the driveway and jumped out of the car just seconds after Cam put it into park. He had moved his suitcase up front with him and therefore didn't need to open the back door of the car, instead hurrying straight to the doorstep, pulling his luggage behind him. Once Colt had gotten out, though, the car started to move again as Cam pulled off the driveway and drove through the side yard, the sedan disappearing around the back of the modern styled house.

The original Killing Game rp: (x)

Name: Colton (Colt) Taylor
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Description: 5'11'', blue-green eyes, messy dirty blond hair clipped shorter on the sides, upturned lips; (x). He generally wears a blue T-shirt and white jeans, as well as a new pair of black Converse, having had to throw his old ones away after the Killing Game.
Personality: Colt is calm and analytical, though also at times quite competitive. He's good-natured, mild-tempered, and generally amiable towards those around him, proving rather difficult to aggravate. There are certain things he will not tolerate for even a second, however, and one of those is harm being threatened to those he loves. Though very intelligent, he often can get carried away in the moment and overlook important details.
Interests: He enjoys and is quite proficient in chemistry, which is his college major, woodworking, cooking, though he's not exactly the best at it, and light-heartedly teasing others, especially Nadia. He's afraid of snakes, fire, and Nadia.

Name: Cameron (Cam) Taylor
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Description: 6'1'', green eyes, windswept dirty blond hair slightly longer than his brother's, features less pointed than Colt's; (x). When working, he often wears a dark green dress shirt, white slacks, and tan loafers, though his casual outfits are more along the lines of a sweatshirt, jeans, and sneakers.
Personality: Cam is outgoing, friendly, and perhaps a bit naive. He loves his family dearly and despite moving out to start his own business only recently remains available and close. He's protective of his younger brother, Colt, but oftentimes it's Colt who has to look out for him, as Cam tends to be even more reckless and goofy than he. While Colt is rather rational and calm, Cam's temper isn't as difficult to stir up, though he can keep it mediated when need be.

Suitcase rolling along behind him, Colt reached up to adjust the c-shaped pillow slung around his neck as he strode through the airport, away from baggage claim. Christmas break, at last. He loved school, he did, but he was still anxious to get home. The excitement and joy that the addition of Nadia to their family had brought still hadn't died out, and he was excited to see his friend again, despite the fact that she'd probably done something like hide snakes everywhere or rig up a system in his room to play Spanish music that would only turn off when you said a specific Gaelic phrase. You could never know with her.

Due to the 2-hour plane ride, Colt was wearing sweatpants and a comfortable hoodie, an outfit really quite impractical for the southern California environment he'd left behind but one that he was very grateful for as he emerged from the sliding doors into the 33 degree Washington weather. There was snow on the forecast for later that day and he was glad that Cam had been able to take off work; his older brother was surprisingly great at snowball fights. He just hoped he could get him on his side; Nadia and Cam allied together in combat sounded terrifying. Speaking of Cam, as Colt was just about to sit down on a bench outside the airport, the 20 year-old pulled up in his slate grey sedan and rolled down the window about halfway, calling, "Wow, you look warm and cozy out there! Doesn't even seem like you needed a ride; I'll just be going now." "NO!" Colt begged, standing up hurriedly, grabbing the handle of his suitcase, and sprinting to the car. "Please don't leave me!"

Cam rolled up the window and moved the car forwards a couple inches. Colt pounded on the window, faking a scowl and causing his guffawing brother to brake and unlock the car. "You think you're so funny, don't you?" he muttered, throwing his suitcase into the back before bolting around to the passenger side and slamming the door shut. "I am!" Cam grinned, putting the car back into drive before ruffling Colt's hair and adding, "Good to see you." The college student shook his head with a laugh, then reached over to hug his older brother. "Good to see you, too."

After the two had driven for about 40 minutes of the hour-and-a-half drive, catching up and goofing around, Colt reached around to the suitcase on the seat behind him, unzipped it while Cam berated him about traffic safety, and extracted a large package. Christmas was tomorrow, but he didn't want to wait to show it to his brother. "Do you want to see what I got for Nadia? Other than that other thing I asked you about, of course."

Support! I love this idea! It's clear you put a lot of thought into it all. I think the Wondercards system is really interesting, though requiring just 3 is potentially a bit too few. It would be nice to see the silver boxes implemented and this is a great way to do it!

Name: Mahogany Lake
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Powers/Weapons: Mahogany possesses the ability to fade into and move as a shadow, essentially transferring his physical form into his own shadow. As a shadow he cannot change in shape or size, though he can hide in other shadows, provided they are large enough. When not concealed in shadows, this form appears as one of a human that has been disconnected from whoever was casting it. He is unable to hold this form indefinitely, however; it is an exercise of endurance. Movement still expends energy and he is affected by thirst and hunger. He must emerge from the shadow in order to interact with the physical world. He wields no weapons, being extremely uneasy at even the idea of injuring others.
Root beer
Fandom: Original Character
Appearance: 6’0’’, electric blue eyes, dirty blond hair that’s long on top and swept over to his right, warm beige skin, pointed features; he typically wears a white hoodie with the sleeves pushed up, pale blue-grey jeans, and black high tops, as well as a simple gold chain necklace with a small crescent moon pendant; similar to (x).
Personality: Mahogany is a careful, surprisingly cheerful young man with a kind heart and a love for helping others. Though he does value his quiet time, he’s typically fairly available to socialize and interact with others. He doesn’t form close attachments particularly easily, though, but when he does he holds them in extreme importance.
