Zigzag followed after Night silently, glancing back at Rebeka once. He almost smiled when she flipped him. Bullies so rarely got what they deserved, it was nice for a change.

"I seriously doubt that will work," Zigzag said, not even looking his way as he spoke. In fact, he didn't seem embarrassed at all for listening in on their conversation. "All she'd have to do is call her hellhounds and you'd be dinner."

Zigzag hissed and scrambled away from the two hellhounds. He growled, in perfect dog, "Stay away from me."

Zigzag's face visibly twists into a annoyed look as glances over Ricky. Part of him wants to whack the guy, the other part wants to avoid him at all costs. Unfortunately for him, the violent side usually prevailed. He sensed an argument with Ricky at some point - or maybe he'd just leave and Zigzag would never have to see him again. That was a nice alternative.

Zigzag winced at the sudden appearance of people and loud noises. "Idiots never shut up," he muttered to himself, taking another sip of tea and clutching the book closer. Weren't libraries supposed to be quiet, sacred things? At least that's what Chao always told him. It didn't seem very quiet now, and he was liking these new people less and less. Except Night. Night seemed okay.

Zigzag sipped, and then replied softly, "Chai. Magic-infused?" He eyed Night, but didn't make any motion to say hello back. Instead, he switched his gaze to Leonidas and narrowed his eyes.

Zigzag, as if sensing they were talking about him, poked his head out of the room. He clutched the book to his chest, tightening his grip a little when he saw the new people. One of them did not have a particularly friendly vibe, and he bristled just looking at him, eyes narrowing and shoulders drawing in a bit. The other seemed much quieter and nicer, and he kind of liked her at first glance.

Zigzag shook his head, muttering to himself. He was curious, though. Tentatively, he poked his head into the first room he came across, staring at the bookshelves. It smelled old, yellowing pages and little like dust, but he liked it. Carefully, he bushed his fingers across the spine of the first interesting one he saw and pulled it out from its designated space on the shelf. He'd already read it before, many, many times with his many, many siblings. He flipped to his favorite part, the few paragraphs Hyui had read in her mimicking voice at Chao's request, and smiled a little, tracing the words with his hand.

"Sure, I guess," Zigzag muttered. He relaxed a little, but continued worrying at his sleeve. God, he hated dogs. They were too noisy, too fast, too social, too touchy-feely. Plus, they always smelled wrong to him.

"Good. I haven't heard enough hellhound to speak my mind." He pushed his shaking fingers through his hair, willing them to stop. The new place he could deal with, the dogs he could handle, but together it was a little too much in all the wrong ways. He didn't stop shaking.

"No, I don't," Zigzag said. His fingers trembled as he gripped his sleeve tightly, and he still looked like he wanted to bolt. "Do all hellhounds understand dog?"

Zigzag looked like he wanted to disappear completely. He flinched when Mia barked and hissed back, eyes flaring bright yellow for a moment. "Go away, mutt," he said, in dog, hoping Mia understood even though she obviously was not a normal dog.

Zigzag paled - which might've seemed impossible with his already too-white skin, but he managed. "D-dogs?" he asked, cat-liked pupils widening in fear. "You have dogs? That bite?"

Val smiled. "I kind of noticed. I guess I should introduce myself properly first. I'm Val Enbriu. I used to have a longer first name, but I kinda forgot it a hundred years after my dad left, and I'm not in contact with anyone who knew it when I was younger, so," he shrugged, obviously not worried by the gaps in his memory. "I'm about two thousand three hundred years old, meaning I stopped paying attention to useless things a long time ago. I like writing music and poetry and short stories and I take a frankly disturbing number of photos. I enjoy makeup more than I should, I think flowers are nature's greatest gift, and I've never had a proper pet cat even though I love them." He runs a hand through his hair, as if fixing it. "All right, your turn. Tell me about yourself."

"Oh," Zigzag said quietly. "Um, is there, like, anything I need to know before I walk into a room full of lava or something?"

Zigzag let himself indulge in his curiosity for a moment. "How many books are in here?" he asked, pushing some of his dark hair off his forehead.

"So, Cat," Val said, keeping pace with her despite his tiny legs. "I guess we should learn about each other, since we'll be together for quite a while? I- I just want you to know that I will never hurt you, okay? I don't- I could never do that, and I will protect you like a friend."

Zigzag's nose twitched - sort of like a cat - but he shook his head. "I'll get used to it," he said, glancing around at everything. He liked the smell of books, he'd grown up around it, and one of his older sister's had burned insence often enough that he didn't mind, although lavender had gotten on his nerves.

"Oh, uh," Val said, not expecting the burst of excitement. "All right, lead the way."

Zigzag stepped inside without another word. He dropped his sleeve and forced himself to stuff his hands in his pockets instead.

"Bias lasts through generations. Halfbreeds will be seen as lower class until I am gone. I don't trust seer bullcrap until it happens," Zigzag said. "So all the 'bright future' and 'things will change for the better' stuff can go to Hell."
