I lately reviewed a project plan and saw one of these simple click matrixed organization charts. After looking at it for a while to try and understand what was going on, I asked these: "Who gets the bullet if the project fails? " The answer I got back was "The team gets the bullet. " Now, some of you might think I was less than tactful in asking this question, but after studying this organization chart I honestly couldn't tell who was steering the ship. Then when I heard that it was "The team" that has been accountable I got my answer: No one was accountable. If something gone wrong on the task this structure allowed for those in leadership opportunities to point fingers at the other person because the command team was a team of equals.
