GIMP Pixel Tips

GIMP was what I first used to learn to do sprite work. Its a free art program and does more than just pixel art. Can animate in it too if you'd like.

Once you download and install GIMP, you'll need to check if the Pixel brush is included or not.
1. Click on the Pencil tool
2. Click the image of the brush that is active (red arrow)
3. Look through the drop down

You can see in my image I have "Pixel" selected based on the brush name.

If it is not there, that is ok! We can simply make the brush.

How to make a pixel brush in GIMP

1. Click Pencil (if you left this menu area)
2. Click on the pencil icon next to the brush, "Edit this brush"

3. A new menu should open up (brush editor). Of the tabs at the top of this menu, click the one on the far left, "Brushes"
4. Right click on top of any of the displayed brushes in the menu and click "new brush"

5. Set the following:
Shape: Square
Radius: 1
Spikes: 2
Hardness: 1 (max)
Aspect Ratio: 1
Angel: 0
Spacing 20
6. At the top of the menu, change it from Untitled to a name you'd like to give it. (Ex. Pixel, Pixel Brush, etc) and press enter to confirm it. It will now be saved to your brush menu to select.

7. While the new brush is selected, in the Pencil menu, set the Size to 1. You now can do pixel art in GIMP freely, can simply change the brush size as needed.

End Part 1.

Working on part two. Post was getting a little long, but this should get an environment started for you if you wanted to play around with it :) part 2 will have the recoloring like I mentioned in the PM.
