I know this might sound stupid, but how do they work? what do I do to increase friendship? are the values the same as in other pokemon games?

To evolve Pokemon that need high friendship, you use a

Soothe Bell on them. You can buy these at the Item Shop :)

In case of ~~emergency~~ Plushie

I believe you can also go to the Salon and give your Pokemon an Acupuncture for a friendship evolution.

Actually yes, both Soothe Bells and Acupuncture in the Salon work, even though the wording is confusing because both 'friendship' and 'happiness' refer to the same thing.
