Ivy yawned and rubbed her slate blue eyes with the back of her pale hand. Her naturally waved, auburn hair which fell to her waist was falling behind her, it had been brushed but not put up. She wore a simple pyjama vest top with a lotus flower on and matching trousers. She had owl slippers that muffled her steps as she walked. “Hullo” she said between yawns.

Azure sat up from her skinny bed, opening her mouth wide to moan a yawn. She got out of bed and shivered. She opened the draped curtains to see that the purple forest was covered in soft white snow. It looked so peaceful; if snow could even look peaceful. Her eyes reflected Ivy’s as she walked over to her. Her image reflected in the glass as fuzzy her owl slippers muffled a sound, each step she took.
’Hullo’
‘Morning.’ Azure replied as Snow tiptoed over to her, her fluffy white lynx. She curled around her before jumping up onto her bed and purring softly. She shook her head, ‘Good sleep?’ She pulled on a black and grey knit sweater and hopped as she slid on her fuzzy socks. It was 6 am. Breakfast wasn’t until 7:30 so if Azure was quick, and only if her best friend would join her, she could take a trip to the forest and collect some pink and green berries. ‘Isn’t this year going to be great? I hear that we are getting messenger hawks.. or owls.. or some sort of bird.’ Her breath was misty and fresh as she spoke.

“I really hope so! I love birds! Which do you think we’ll get?” Ivy shuffled along to the lounging area of their shared dorm. It was there that a cat jumped down, landing gracefully on Ivy’s shoulders “Hello Azalea” Ivy scratched her cat under the chin before sitting on the sofa where Azalea curled up on her lap. “Have you got an idea for ootd? Also I slept the same as usual, you?” Ivy referred to a topic previously mentioned with a quick mental apology. She quickly shoved her hair into a loose ponytail to keep it out of her face although her curtain bangs escaped being put up.

Azure shrugged. ‘Okay I guess. Though Snow was purring all through the night and at some point she left a dead mouse on my slipper.’ She shivered at the thought ‘I’m going to be seeing mice in my sleep,’ - she laughed - ‘Hmm.. I hope it’s a barn owl, they’re so beautiful. Or maybe.. one of those special ones. You know, that only the prefects get? It’s some special perk. I don’t know.’

She shifted from one foot to another, ‘My brother said that he’d send me money for the bird this year as we haven’t got one at home. You know how it is.’ Azure looked up. Snow had jumped to Azalea and started to playfully gnaw at her ear, pulling her to the floor with a soft thud.
Ivy already knew. Her parents had left Azure and her her brother when they were young but luckily all their aunts and grandparents had chipped in to send her to school. Her brother had already finished university a few years ago and was earning a wage in a cosy little flat quite a way’s from Althea’s, or as a lot of the pupils called it - Aama.

Azure tipped her books, empty potion bottles and fresh parchment into her school satchel then looked at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were rimmed and smudged black, her hair was scruffy though her blue bangs fell helplessly down her face. She rubbed her eyes and splashed water into them using the small stone sink that was attached to a section in the wall before tying her bangs behind her head to match Ivy. ‘Let’s go for breakfast. Mika will probably be up but it’s too early for everyone else to be out of bed.’ Mika, short for Mikandra, was the head girl for their year. She was tall, brown haired and smiley who often handed out sweets when they were a year below.

‘Probably now. Maybe into some casual clothes though wrap up warm. You know how the dinning hall is in winter.’
Azure slipped into the bathroom with a soft black shirt with a bubble tea logo and a hoodie with white tassels. She pulled on navy leggings and tugged on her purple and salmon-coloured trainers. ‘I don’t know actually.’ She opened the door. ‘Maybe this assembly? Remember we are one of the first people here, staying over the hols and most people come back today. It’ll be chaos with all the newbies and their perfect bags full of clean new uniform.’ The end Azure said with a slightly bitter tone. She wished for a new cloak but she had to be grateful to be here with her best friend. She thought of Ivy like a sister and Azure knew that she probably felt the same way.
‘What class are you most excited for?’ She asked, waiting for Ivy to finish dressing. Though Azure already knew, Plantology.

“True, do we have to help with the lost kids and hustle and bustle today?” Ivy says this as she slips into her room and gets charged into a green dress with a dark green corset and a vine overskirt that suits her name. She had knee high socks below that and had a black cloak clipped around her neck and a brown one on her arm for her best friend. She wore ankle height black boots with a small heel. In the 10 minutes Ivy was in her room, she had managed some mascara and some eye shadow that complimented her outfit. “Which do you think I’m most excited for?” Ivy raised an eyebrow as she handed Azure the spare cloak.

‘Plantology of course.’ Azure grinned taking the cloak. ‘Thanks. To be honest I liked it just you and me; roaming the halls and practically doing what we like. I don’t want to help them either but you know that Mika wants us to help her. It’s the least we could do after last year’s incident.’ She laughed, taking Ivy’s hand and heading down for breakfast. ‘I am quite excited for arts and Plantology too. All lessons are fun.. except Arithmetics with Ms Findel. Let’s hope we don’t have her again.’ The clock struck 7 am ‘Let’s get something to eat soon. Newbies arrive at 8 but you know their parents. They’ll get here at 7:45.’ They entered the hall and the smell of breakfast wafted through the air, filling Azure to the brim with joy.

“It’ll be just us at the end of this year too! Our prize” Ivy smiled, she also preferred the school when it was quiet and they could do what they wanted. As she followed Azure to the hall she laughed her agreement to the hope that they didn’t have Ms Findel again, Ivy didn’t like her one bit. “I’m looking forward to creature care too” Ivy said before taking a deep breathe in, inhaling the delicious scents from the cooks and smiling as she breathed out again. “Let’s get our food and enjoy our 15 minutes of peace”

Azure nodded in agreement, unhooking her hand from Ivy’s as she walked up to the cook. ‘Morning. I’d like some yogurt with berries and a slice of buttered toast please. Oh and some OJ. Thanks.’ She took her food from the cook, handing over her breakfast money, and set it down on the table. ‘Getting anything Ivy? Or are you going to stand there looking daft.’ Azure smiled, slipping a few left over coins into Ivy’s hand. She nibbled on a piece toast and thought about all the new witches and wizards.

“Hello! May I have some toast and jam?” Ivy used the coins in her cloak, handing them over as always. “Thank you very much! Enjoy your day” she said with a smile as she took her plate and sat next to Azure “I wonder how this year will turn out? I hope some of them with join our clubs this year...” Ivy handed the coins back to Azure with a few more added “Thanks but I have more money, you need to save yours for pets, caretaking and trips”

Azure tilted her head and gave Ivy a smile. She tucked into her breakfast. ‘So.. what clubs.. do you.. want to run this year?’ She said through mouthfuls of toast. There were lots of options though she always ran it with Ivy. Last year they did Astronomy Club and the year before: Code-Mapping Club. It was always so much fun with her but she chose the last two so this time it was her turn. ‘Mail, Ivy. Azure.’ Mika strode down towards the girls and picked up a slice of Azure’s toast and flicked her a coin. ‘For the cost.’ She smiled, handing Ivy a large green package with golden twine. ‘Anything for me, Mika?’ Azure asked.

Mika shakes her head. ‘If you did then it hasn’t arrived yet. Oh and girls, I have a little surprise for you,’ - Azure got up from her seat, intrigued by what Mika was going to say, - ‘Sit down Azure and finish your breakfast. Come to my cubby in.. an hour, after assembly. See you shortly.’ She smiled and left, munching the rest of Azure’s toast.

‘Surprises already? Term hasn’t even technically begun yet.’ Azure took a mouthful of yogurt and made a face. ‘Yeah I’m done with breakfast; the yogurt’s changed. Why did I even go for it in the first place.’ She sighed. ‘We should probably go soon, after your breakfast, to change and check that the cats haven’t chewed off each others ears.’ She grinned. New term was beginning and Azure was excited for it. ‘Open your package and then I have a little surprise.’

Ivy finishes her toast and opens her box, a snack and goodies box filled with their favourite snacks and drinks. When Ivy read the note it said: ‘For Ivy and Azure, enjoy your snacking and scheming ;) from mom’ Ivy handed the note to Azure. “Yay, look, it’s got all of our favourites and some new ones! What surprise?” Ivy asked confused once Ivy had read the note.

'Midnight feast?' Azure raises her eyebrow curiously, grinning. 'Your mom is the best! Here.' She took out a rather small squishy package wrapped in floral paper and placed it on the table. Azure carefully unwrapped it and, blushing from embarrassment, flipped over the cushion to reveal it: a beautiful green hair pin.

'You and your mom have helped me so much and I want to show that. I worked for it in the holidays that I was away doing dog walking, bake sales, charity work. It was a lot of fun but I'm glad I got this to you.' Azure smiled warmly and hugged her best friend, though her cloak slightly got in the way and she stifled a laugh.

Ivy hugged Azure with enthusiasm, squeezing her best friend and trying not to cry. Ivy buried her face in Azure’s cloaked shoulder as she hugged her sister. “Thank you so much! I love you bestie!” Ivy was still hugging Azure so Azure couldn’t see her cry.

Azure smiled as she hugged her. She did think that Ivy was her sister. And though she wasn't, biologically, Ivy was still the best friend any person could ever have and no one could take that fact away from her. "Don't cry, you'll get my cloak wet! Use a tissue! It's just a token of my thoughts." Azure laughed gently, pulling Ivy off her cloak so their eyes met. "I love you too. Now, what do you think about checking on those naughty kittens, hmm? I bet you six coins that they'll still be on the floor, nibbling at each others paws!" She grinned taking her food tray and Ivy's up to the wash.

Ivy wipes her eyes with her sleeve and follow after Azure. She put the hairclip in over her bun and picked up the present from her mom, carrying it to their dorm. “I bet 6 coins that when we get it, they’ll stop.” Ivy giggles. “We still have 15 minutes until assembly” Her makeup had leaked a little when she cried.
