Does a premium account (I know you said you dont have one) affect how long it takes for a chain until you find a shiny?

Yes, it affects. Without premium, the max. chance for get a shiny is around 1-2% and with premium is around 2-3%. Maybe the difference doesn't looks a lot, but you can hatch a lot of less eggs and get a shiny with premium.
