the fox was suddenly catching the mice and rats and kept eating them the birds saw everything but they couldn't just tell them or the fox would catch them if they tried going any lower..
of course the fox knew if he stayed out in the morning the villagers did have a chance to kill him due to it only being one of him

Eyes lock on a rabbit that looks unaware and uninflected
Jumps on it and eats quickly before darting back into den senting bear
