Marrabelle stopped in the hallway, still wringing her hands, and
blurted out, "Please don't hate me, but I really have to ask, do
you really not have any feelings for HG? I mean, the way you were
holding her hand-"
He looked down at her, almost unbelievably. “Marrabelle, I already
told you this yesterday! I was trying to get her out of her room to
get breakfast, she wouldn’t leave the room otherwise!”
Marrabelle said quickly, "I know, and I'm sorry, and I shouldn't
even be asking you, but it's been nagging at me ever since it
started, and I really just wanted to...I don't know, try to
understand? I can't! I really can't! I've tried.."
He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Why can’t you trust
me? After everything! After Lilith and Shabbi came along, I stayed
with you, I didn’t run off! After you’re brother-“ He stopped after
realizing what he said. “Marrabelle, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean-“
He huffed, running a hand through his hair. “But that doesn’t fight
what I’m saying. “After everything, we’ve been there for each
other, helped each other, and the moment someone comes along and
claims they knew me, you throw all that to the wind?” He sounded
hurt, leaning against the wall.
"I'm not trying to throw anything away," Marrabelle said, sounding
hurt. "I'm just...trying not to look too hard into it, but you're
not making any of it any easier." She paused. "If you saw me
hanging around someone else, and spending close time with them,
practically falling asleep in their arms, holding their hand and
smiling, wouldn't you be preety worried? I get it, she's hurting,
but..you have the rest of us to think about too!"
“I do think about you! It’s not like I spend every breathing moment
around her, is that how you see it?” He said, his voice rising just
slightly against his own will.
"So I just ignore this sinking feeling in my gut and go about my
day, huh? I don't have the right to be worried? All it would take
is a simple, 'No Marrabelle, I still love you, it's okay to be
worried,' and we could go about with our day but you're just making
it worse!" Marrabelle said, her voice rising.
“It’s hard to be patient when, as you said, this happened 24 hours
ago, and yesterday you’re already accusing me for having feelings
for another woman!”
Marrabelle ran her hands through her hair, before looking at the
ground. "I don't see why you're just calling me ridiculous and not
trying at all to see things from my perspective! I understand I'm
overstepping it a little, and I'm sorry, but this is hard."
