The knot turned into a pile of dust, then Muriel said some unintelligible words, then the world looked like it was spinning, going in and out of reality in weird ways. Then it stopped. Goldilocks started growing until she became Grandma. She put her clothes on that Luke and Meg got for her. Muriel floats off.

They continue walking. Luke asked, “So Grandma. How did you become a chicken?” Grandma said, “Well your father and I were wanting something from a jinn. We were desperate to fix Warren. He lives in a cottage up a hill. A jinn can ask three questions. If you answer all three, he gives you a wish. If you lie, he gets to kill you. If you don’t answer, they get to do something to you but not kill you. The jinn asked me what I wouldn’t answer. I refused, so I was turned into a chicken.” Luke said, “It must’ve been strange being a chicken.” Grandma said, “It was. My mind slipped and I always acted like a chicken. Until the monsters came in through the window. Then my mind clears a bit and I found you two.”

“It was confusing being a chicken.” Grandma said. They arrive in a gorge but keep walking. They pass lots of flowers. “Don’t smell the flowers. You’ll want to eat them and spend the rest of your life doing so.” Luke walks away from the flowers.

They come to a cliff with logs, about five feet above each other and three feet apart. “NERO! LET DOWN THE ROPE LADDER!” Grandma said. A gruff voice said, “No. If you really need me, you must prove it. Send one up the logs and then I will lower the ropes.” Grandma said, “I’ll do it. You kids don’t go get into trouble.”
