not sure why, but recently I’ve been
toying around with the idea of Connor having a crush.
Takes place before ”Hoenn’s Mystery” when Mel is seventeen and Connor is fourteen.
AGES;
Mel: Sixteen (16)
Xavier: Sixteen (16)
Connor: Fourteen (14)
Madam ??: Twelve (12)

STILL NO WAY, NO WAY!
When Professor Sycamore had called them down to the lab and told them he had a job for them, Connor hadn’t thought much of it. Just the usual “oh boy, another job!” scenario.
He was half right.
“Come on, Con! We’re gonna be late!” Mel shouted, banging her fists against his bedroom door.
Connor stifled a laugh. “I will be out in a moment!” He called back, slipping into his hoodie and grabbing his backpack off the floor. He unlocked the door and trudged out, shooting Mel a grin that she returned without hesitation.
“Finally,” The girl commented as they exited the house. The crisp winter air that filled Lumiose City went largely unnoticed. “You took your time, huh?”
“Of course.” Was his simple, smiling response. “Somebody has to do it.”
They fell silent, watching Riu and Pom tussle in the snowy grass. Connor grinned and sped up, tossing a grin over his shoulder and sticking his tongue out at Mel as he rounded the corner, and..—
“WATCH OUT!” The shriek split the peaceful atmosphere with a bang as Connor went down into the snow with a soft thud, yelping in surprise as his hands made contact with the icy road.
It took him a moment to register the blonde hair tickling his nose, and that was when he realized his face was shoved into somebody’s neck.
And they smelled really, really good.
The person was off of him in a second, scrambling away and rubbing their nose. “Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry!”
It was a boy with short, fluffy blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes that rivaled Mel’s. He was relatively tanned, and had a backpack sling over his shoulder. And he was wearing a huge, puffy jacket.
Clearly an out-of-region-er.
“Hey, are you okay?” The blonde boy asked, reaching out to rest his hand on Connor’s shoulder.
The brunette blinked and nodded. “Yes, thank you.” He smiled, standing and brushing the Snow off his pants and hoodie.
The other boy grinned and stood too. Connor couldn’t help but notice that the other was quite a bit taller than him. Like, six or seven inches at least. And he was really, really cute.
“Connor!” Mel was shouting as she sprinted around the corner, closely followed by Riu and Pom.
“Xavier!” From around a different corner a new voice chimed in as a girl joined them, staring at the blonde boy. “You rushed off! Do not do that!” She said, tossing her black hair over her shoulder with a patronizing look.
The blonde— Xavier— rolled his eyes and smiled at Connor. “Pleasure to meet you,” He said. “I hope to see you around some time, handsome.” He grinned, lifting Connor’s hand to his lips before releasing it and dashing off.
The girl sighed and followed.
Distantly, Connor was aware that Mel was cackling in the background, literally supporting herself via Riu, who was patting her hair. Pom grinned, spotting the scarlet spreading across Connor’s cheeks and heating up his ears.
So he did what anyone else would do.
He shrieked and buried his face in his hands.
————
“Professor! We’re here!” Mel shouted, slamming the door against the wall. She winced and mumbled an apology to the startled lab assistant near the door.
“Mel! Connor!” Professor Sycamore appeared with that huge smile and sparkling eyes. “So good to see you again! Come here, give me a hug!”
Neither teen protested as the professor threw his arms around them and dragged them into a friendly hug. He’d always been like a father anyway. Especially to Connor.
“You called for a job?” Mel asked, after Sycamore released them from the hug and offered them cookies. “What’s up? You okay?”
Professor Sycamore beamed. “I’m just fine!” He insisted. “But last night I was working and had a wonderful thought! Mel! You never went on a journey, did you?”
“.. No..” Mel was flushed, ears bright red. Riu patted her shoulder sympathetically. At sixteen, the only journeying she had done was from town to town to visit people and get food, not to train or battle gyms.
Sycamore turned on Connor next. “And Connor! You never did went either, did you?”
“Uh-uh.” Connor shook his head. At fourteen, he’d journeyed through three forests, all in Johto. Or it may have been one. He didn’t remember. And he didn’t count it as a journey either.
The Professor was practically glowing. “Perfect! You two are experienced trainers despite this! I need someone to escort a young lady across Kalos! There’s a boy with her, but her parents wanted more than one person to escort her.”
“.. You want us to be bodyguards?” Connor asked with a frown.
Sycamore paused and then nodded. “Yeah! You two are some of the best trainers I’ve met. Her parents are practically royalty, they have so much money too! It’s a paying job!”
“.. Then why did you ask us to make sure we had at least three spaces open?” Mel asked somewhat cautiously.
“Because you two will be receiving starter Pokémon as well! You’ll be going on the journey with them!” Sycamore grinned, clapping his hands together.
Both kids’ jaws dropped.
“It’ll be a good experience for you!” Sycamore insisted, spreading his arms. “What do you say, hm?”
Connor and Mel exchanged a look that involved their usual silent conversation.
”They’re doing it again,” Pom whispered to Riu, who nodded fervently beside her.
Finally, the two broke eye contact and nodded to the Professor.
“Yeah. We’re in.” Mel grinned, tucking her hands into her pockets. Connor nodded with a smile.
Sycamore beamed and ushered them into the elevator.
————
“Are you serious?” Connor barked immediately after exiting the elevator.
Because the two kids in the room were the two kids he’d literally run into earlier.
“Hey, it’s hotshot!” The blonde boy winked from where he sat at a table. The girl beside him smacked the back of his head with her palm.
Sycamore raised his eyebrows. “You’ve already met?”
Mel on the other hand was glowering at the blonde boy. “Kinda.” She scowled.
Sighing, the Professor clapped his hands together, quickly gaining the attention of the room. “Xavier, Madam, meet Connor and Amelia. Connor, Mel, meet Xavier and Madam.”
All four kids exchanged a somewhat passive look, though Connor’s eyes lingered on Xavier for a bit longer.
“Do you want to pick your Pokémon or not?”
Immediately all four kids were on him.
Sycamore set the pokeballs on his desk, spreading them somewhat apart. With a dramatic flourish he pressed the buttons and released them. Froakie, Fennekin, Chespin, and Helioptile. “They already have names, so don’t worry about picking a nickname.”
“Wait,” Madam lifted her voice and everyone turned toward her. “Those two already have Pokémon. Why do they need new ones?” She asked with a frown, gesturing toward Riu and Pom.
Riu glowered at her. Pom simply hissed. Madam took a large step away from them.
“Because you’re all starting a journey together!” Sycamore explained with a huge smile. “It’ll be more fun for everyone with new Pokémon! You’ll all be beginners! Oh, right. Mel! Connor! Your old team is off limits for the first part of your journey! You need to learn how to adapt!”
“Wait,” Now it was Mel’s turn to have all eyes on her. “What about Riu?”
“And Pom?” Connor interjected.
Xavier rolled his eyes. “Just return them. Duh.”
“I can’t! Duh.” Mel shot right back, whipping her head around to glare at the blonde.
Sycamore cleared his throat. “You can have them out of their pokeballs as long as they aren’t doing any battling. Battling other Pokémon, I mean. Your old teams can battle each other if they’d like too.”
Pom stuck out her tongue in Xavier’s general direction.
“Fine.” Mel agreed, lifting one hand to fist bump the Lucario by her side. “Lets do this.”
————
There wasn’t too much fighting, to Connor’s surprise. Everyone seemed to already have a Pokémon picked out in their mind.
Which was how Connor ended up with Fenne, the Fennekin. Mel had snatched Ces (the Chespin) off the table first, and Xavier had gone straight for Oaki, the Froakie. Madam had selected Helio (the Helioptile) too.
So, no fighting at first.
Sycamore had shoved them all out of the lab and handed each of them a map of Kalos before suggesting they go to a café a talk. He slammed the door right after.
It was going to be a long day.
Day One.
Connor was already losing his mind.
Apparently Xavier had been hired to be a bodyguard as well by Madam’s parents. He had two Pokémon in his party, not counting his new Froakie. A Simisage and a Bisharp.
Madam only had her new Helioptile. And apparently her parents thought she would be a target. Hence why Connor, Xavier and Mel were there.
Riu and Pom were not enjoying themselves.
And neither was Mel, apparently.
They were seated at a café in Lumiose, Lysandre’s Café. Madam had said the red was a beautiful color. Connor resisted the urge to snort at that comment.
“So,” Madam rested her hands in her lap and looked around the table. A look of disgust flickered through her eyes as she looked at her companions.
Probably because Xavier was on his Pokédex, Mel had her elbows propped on the table, and Connor was nodding off. The four Pokémon (Fenne, Oaki, Ces and Helio) were on the floor with a few dishes of pokepuffs for them to snack on if they wished. Riu and Pom were seated cross-legged on the floor beside their respective trainers.
“Ahem!” Madam cleared her throat, starting her three companions. “As I was saying,—“
Connor barely avoided snorting.
“— I would like to get to know my bodyguards.”
Next to him him, Xavier had a familiar uncomfortable look flashing across his features.
“Tell me your full names, please. Starting with my left.” Madam nodded to Connor, who nearly shrank back into his seat.
“Okay.. I’m Connor.—“
“Full name, please. First, middle and last.”
Connor made a face and then quickly shook himself out. “Sorry. I’m Connor Jay Marino.”
“Next.”
That was Mel. “I’m Aubrey Amelia Vitale.”
Madam leaned forward curiously. “Aubrey Amelia. And yet you go by Amelia?”
Mel shifted uncomfortably. “Yeah. Just my preference.”
“I’ll be calling you Aubrey.”
Mel actually gagged as soon as Madam’s eyes were on Xavier. Connor reached over to pat her back sympathetically. Riu was right beside her too, pressing his muzzle into her arm comfortingly.
“And you?”
“Xavier Ash West.” Xavier turned his head to meet Madam’s dark eyes. “Your turn, madam.”
“None of your business.” The girl replied smoothly. “You’re my bodyguards. You have no reason to know my full name. Or anything about me, for that matter.”
Connor scowled behind his glass of water.
This was going to be a long trip.
————
Making their way down route 2, Connor decided to admit to himself that this wasn’t as bad as it could have been.
Sure, Madam was stuck up and annoying, but Xavier was really nice.
And Pom seemed to like Fenne, so that was always a plus.
Somewhere behind him, Connor could hear Mel talking quietly to Riu and Ces. Probably mostly Riu, though.
“I’m getting rather hungry,” Madam said suddenly, slamming the brakes on their walk. “Let us take a break and have lunch.”
Xavier and Connor exchanged a shrug.
————
Madam stood and brushed herself off. “I saw a flower a bit back; I am going to go get it. Stay here and guard our food.” She instructed before vanishing back down the pathway.
The three exchanged a shrug, resting comfortably on their backs.
“She’s driving me crazy.” Mel conplained after a few minutes. “Seriously. I’m about to rip my eyes out!”
Connor laughed and rested his head on his arms. “Uh-huh. But she is annoying.” He agreed.
Xavier rolled onto his stomach and grinned at Connor. “Yeah, well, I can handle it. Kalos is pretty. People made it sound awful.”
“Rumors,” Mel mused. “Everyone always says Kalos is the worst. I think Kanto is stupid. Everyone says it’s soooo great. Then why are you here?” She snorted.
Connor frowned faintly. “But Mel, isn’t—“
“Don’t,” Mel interrupted, a scowl spreading across her face. “Please.”
Connor accepted it with a yawn.
“Sorry.” Mel apologized after a few minutes. “I’m just so tired of hearing about her. Everyone says she’s the favorite.”
Rolling onto his stomach, Connor looked in Mel’s direction. Xavier remained quiet.
“It’s like.. It’s like they meet her and they forget I exist. Okay?”
Xavier frowned. “But I thought the two of you were good friends?”
Mel shrugged. “We were. But we like different things now.” She answered.
The three fell silent. And then a scream split the air, and then silence surrounded them again.
Connor was on his feet in a split second. “What was that?!”
Xavier was turning white. “That sounded like Madam!” He gasped.
Forgetting the food, the three of them made a wild dash back the way they’d come.
And Connor ran face-first into somebody.
A Flare grunt?
He backpedaled quickly, stepping back toward Xavier and Mel.
“What the— Oh, her guards!” The grunt gasped, bringing her hand up to her mouth. Her other hand rose and pointed at them. “Get them! Don’t let them escape!”
They were surrounded. Completely surrounded.
“I’m breaking the promise!” Xavier yelled, and then two bright flashes announced the arrival of Pawn and Jade.
“Me too!” Mel called, and another flash signaled Aki was out too. Riu growled and held up one paw.
Connor didn’t hesitate in releasing his Pokémon. Simon landed on his shoulder and Ao hit the ground in front of him with a bark.
And then all hell broke loose.
