Long ago, when the world was still young and beautiful, three races stood out from the rest of the life on Earth. They were very powerful species, some could say god-like, and they hated each other. Each race wanted to rule over Earth, and they were willing to fight if they had to.
There were the Likas, the nature spirits, the animal-like creatures that controlled many things in the natural world. Water, plants, the ground itself was under their control, and they were given offerings by the other so-called "lesser" animals in exchange for long summers and plenty of food.
Then there were the Kerani, the fierce warriors of Earth. With all of their claws and fangs they lived in the mountains and caves of the surface of their home planet. They controlled destructive things, such as fire and storms, but they were not cruel. The lesser animals gave them offerings, too, in exchange for protection against evil and disasters.
Finally, there were the Ancients, supposedly the oldest creatures in existence. They were a broad species, so much so that they tended to be divided among themselves. Half of them were considered Demionae, and the other half were considered Angaeli. They were creatures of wind and space and creation, usually not even on Earth at all, but high up in the clouds where the others could not reach them. Again, the lesser creatures made offerings to them in exchange for good luck and good things, and they were respected along with the others of the Three.
However, tensions mounted so high between the Three, that fighting began to break out. Bloodshed like the world had never seen before in its, albeit young, lifetime came down upon the surface of the Earth. In fear, the lesser animals made their offerings and hid from the war, but nothing could stop it.
Eventually, something had to be done. So the lesser animals combined their energy and created a brand new species to act as a moderator between the Three. The plan was effective. The lesser animals offered this new species in exchange for peace, an offering to all of the Three at once. The new creatures were not only to act as a moderator, but to provide a focus point for all of the Three.
It ceased their fighting, and the god-like races agreed to give the Earth to the species, as long as each of them would get equal say in their future. So they retreated to their respectful homes, the Likas the forests and oceans, the Kerani the mountains and deep underground caverns, and the Ancients their mysterious home outside of Earth. But before they did so, they decided on a name for their species.
Humans.
For thousands of years they watched humans progress, keeping their agreement of peace between themselves. The humans never knew of their existence, and the Three never had any problems again.
Well, that's what the Earth Mother thought, as she rested in the core of the planet named after her. After all, she had told the lesser animals what to do during the war and it had supposedly worked. Her children, the Three, shouldn't have had anymore problems.
Yet, something when horribly wrong in the plan.
You see, the Earth Mother did not expect traitors within the Three. But there they were, hiding in plain sight. Soon enough, the Traitors from the different powerful creatures teamed up, seeking. Well, no one's quite sure.
As for the humans, most of the general population didn't know about the Three. The highest, most secretive part of the government, however? They knew. After all, the humans had to be moderators, correct? So every fifty years they'd choose some new people to act as the moderators, to meet with the Three and keep the peace. They were called the Mods, and they did not know of the Traitors, as those were kept secret by the Three.
The Mods were recently killed.
The government scrambled to find new Mods, and they've decided to pick you.
Up for the challenge? We'll see. Because with gods that live for hundreds of thousands of years, things can get pretty complicated. And messy.
