Title: Chapter 1

Saffron woke up to the sun shining through her window. She got out of bed and opened the window, letting in the cool morning breeze. Her Pikachu jumped up onto the window sill.

"Today's the day, Pikachu. We finally get to start our Pokémon journey."

“Pikachu!” Pikachu said, clearly as excited as she was.

Saffron smiled. "You ready?"

“Pika pi!!” Pikachu exclaimed.

“Alright then. Let’s go!”

Saffron got dressed and ran out of her room, Pikachu right behind her. They climbed down the stairs and ran into the kitchen. Pikachu hopped up onto the island.

“Good morning, Mom!” Saffron said. “Pikachu!” Pikachu added.

“Good morning, dear. Good morning, Pikachu. Today’s the big day! Are you excited?” Mrs. Mayfair said as she petted Pikachu.

“We sure are! I can’t wait to get out there, catch lots of Pokémon and have lots of battles!”

“That’s great! But first, you need to eat breakfast. Then I need you to run an errand for me and take that package to Professor Elvin,” Mrs. Mayfair pointed to a brown package sitting on the kitchen counter.

“What is it?” Saffron asked.

“It’s the newest prototype of the Poké Ball your father and I have been working on.”

The Mayfair’s were a family of high-class Pokémon scientists. They worked in a variety of different fields, such as the study of Pokémon types and Pokémon evolution. Saffron had grown up with Pokémon all around her and she knew a lot about them. Her parents were the owners of the Mayfair Pokémon Science Centre franchise, having facilities all over the world. The headquarters for the organization was in Melrose Town.

Saffron and Pikachu ate breakfast together. After they were done, Saffron bade her mother goodbye and set off for Prof. Elvin’s lab at the heart of the town. When she arrived, there was a group of people lined up around the entrance.

“I wonder what’s going on,” Saffron said to Pikachu.

“Pika,” Pikachu said curiously.

Saffron made her way through the group of people. When she broke through, she found North in front of the entrance. North was Saffron’s rival. They had grown up together and North always tried to best Saffron. Everything was always a competition with him. He was the son of Prof. Elvin.

“That’s right, people of Melrose Town. I will become the greatest Pokémon trainer there ever was. With the new Pokémon my father gave me, I can’t lose.” He held up a shiny red and white Poké Ball. Everyone cheered. That was when he noticed Saffron.

“Hey, Saffron. Here to see Dad?” he said.

“Yes. I came to deliver this package to Prof. Elvin,” Saffron said.

“Yeah, whatever. Dad’s inside. See you around, loser,” he said as he left.

“He’s always a bundle of joy, isn’t he?” Saffron says.

“Pika.”

The two walk into Prof. Elvin’s laboratory. It was a lot smaller than the one her parents owned. But it was perfect for Prof. Elvin’s work.

“Hello, Saffron. Is that the new prototype?” Prof. Elvin said.

“Yes it is,” she says and sets it down on his work desk.

“Thank you! I have your Poké Balls and Poké-Pad all ready for you here.” He picked up a tray and held it out to her. In it were five Poké Balls and a Poké-Pad.

Poké Balls were tools used by trainers to capture Pokémon. There are many different varieties of Poké Balls that are good for catching different types of Pokémon. A Poké-Pad is an electronic device that contains information about every Pokémon. It can also be used as a map and to transfer Pokémon from the Pokémon Storage System and has many other functions.

“Thank you, Professor,” Saffron said. She put the Poké Balls in a pocket of her bag and the Poké-Pad in her pocket. “Pikachu and I are headed off now.”

“Best of luck to you on your journey!” Prof. Elvin called after Saffron. She waved and exited the lab.

Saffron took out her Poké-Pad. “Let’s see. From here, the closest city with a gym is Camille City. Let’s head over there!” she said to Pikachu. “Pika!”

They set off down Route One. No doubt North was already way ahead. It didn’t matter, though. Saffron wanted to take it slow and catch some Pokémon on her way. There may even be a battle waiting for her.

“What Pokémon shall we catch first?” Saffron looked around. There didn’t seem to be any Pokémon in sight. They were all hiding. Saffron went into the long grass where she knew Pokémon hid. A moment later, a Wurmple jumped out.

“This is our chance, Pikachu! Let’s catch it!” Saffron said.

With a cry, Pikachu jumped off of her shoulder and faced the Wurmple.

“Alright Pikachu, start with Thundershock!”

“Pikachuuuuu!” Pikachu fired a weak bolt of lightning at the Wurmple. The attack hit and Wurmple went down. Then it attacked with String Shot.

“Dodge it, Pikachu!”

Pikachu jumped out of the way just in time. Suddenly, there was a huge explosion further into the forest. Wurmple was startled and ran off.

“Oh no! We were so close!” Saffron said.

Pikachu hung her ears. “Pika.”

“It’s ok. You were great. We’ll get ‘em next time!” Saffron said encouragingly. Pikachu perked up.

“Let’s keep going. I’m sure we’ll find more Pokémon along the way.”

Pikachu jumped onto Saffron’s shoulder and they set off up the route. Saffron couldn’t help but wonder what that explosion had been. ‘I guess we’ll find out soon.’

As they moved further into the forest, they could hear Pokémon cries and shouts. Saffron ran around a bend and stopped. She could see North up ahead battling another trainer with a Venonat with his shiny Eevee. It looked like the battle had been going on for a while. Saffron stayed back and watched.

“Eevee, use Swift!” North commanded. Eevee opened its mouth and orange stars flew out of it. They made a direct hit.

“Finish with Quick Attack!” Eevee ran at a very fast speed toward Venonat and hit it. Venonat went down and didn't get back up. Eevee was panting hard and Saffron could see that it was poisoned.

“Humph. Not bad, I guess. Return!” North said, holding a Poké Ball out towards Eevee. A red beam shot out and connected with Eevee then retracted it back into the Poké Ball. North then turned and started up the path towards Camille City. The other trainer had just returned his Venonat to its Poké Ball. “You were great, Venonat. Now get a good rest,” he said.

“I hope Eevee’s okay. It must have been poisoned by that Venonat,” Saffron said.

“Pikachu,” Pikachu agreed.

They set off once again, going in the general direction North had taken. They headed through the grass. Suddenly, there was rustling and a Fletchling flew out of the grass.

“A Fletchling! Go, Pikachu! It’s not getting away this time!” Saffron said.

“Pika!” Pikachu jumped off of Saffron’s shoulder and faced Fletchling. The bird Pokémon prepared for battle as well.

“Start with Thundershock!”

“Pikachuuuuu!”

Fletchling dodged the attack and came in with Tackle. Pikachu was hit and went flying back.
“Quick Attack, Pikachu!”

Pikachu ran at full speed toward Fletchling. The bird Pokémon couldn’t dodge it and was hit hard. It slammed into a tree. Fletchling quickly regained is posture and used Growl. “Fletchling!” Pikachu’s attack was decreased. Fletchling then used Tackle again.

“Dodge, Pikachu, and use Electro Ball!”

Pikachu jumped out of the way as Fletchling flew by. Pikachu then jumped up in the air and started spinning around.

“Pika, pika!” A yellow ball of electricity formed at Pikachu’s tail. “Chu, pi!” Pikachu hurled the ball of electricity at Fletchling, who managed to dodge it using Quick Attack. It then flew straight for Pikachu.

“Pikachu, you use Quick Attack, too!” Pikachu ran straight for Fletchling. The two Pokémon collided and there was a big explosion from the impact. When the smoke cleared, Saffron could see that both Pokémon were panting. ‘That move should finish it. It’s risky considering Pikachu already took so much damage, but it’s our only chance!’

“Pikachu, use Volt Tackle!” Saffron commanded.

“Pika, pika, pika, pika, pika!” Pikachu started running toward Fletchling at full speed, its body covered in golden electricity. Pikachu then tackled Fletchling head on. There was a big explosion. When the smoke cleared, Saffron saw Pikachu was surrounded by sparks of yellow electricity, receiving recoil damage from the powerful move. Fletchling was knocked out. Saffron took out a Poké Ball.

“Go, Poké Ball!” She threw the Poké Ball at Fletchling. It hit the Tiny Robin Pokémon and captured it inside. The Poké Ball then wobbled and beeped. A moment later, with one final beep, it stilled. Joy filled Saffron.

“We did it Pikachu!” Saffron ran to the Poké Ball and picked it up. She then held it high in the air. “We caught our first Pokémon!”

“Pikachu!” Pikachu danced happily. Saffron took out an Oran berry from her bag and handed it to Pikachu. “You were great, Pikachu! You deserve it.” Pikachu took the berry and happily ate it. They set off again. It was sunset when they reached Camille City. They went to the Pokémon Centre.

“Hello, Nurse Joy,” Saffron said to the young woman with a Chansey behind the big counter in the center of the room.

“Good evening, young trainer,” Nurse Joy said.

“Can I register for the Avalon League here?” Saffron asked.

“Yes, of course,” Nurse Joy said with a smile. “May I see your Poké-Pad, please?”

Saffron handed over her Poké-Pad. Nurse Joy put it in a slot beside a computer and pushed a few buttons. Then there was a beeping sound and the Poké-Pad popped out of the slot along with a plastic card from the slot beside it.

“Here’s your Poké-Pad and your Trainer Card. You’ll be asked to show your Trainer Card when you challenge a gym as well as at the Avalon Conference along with your Poké-Pad. When you’ve collected the eight badges you need, you’ll need to sign in at the Conference in Willow Plateau. Best of luck to you, Saffron!” Nurse Joy handed back the Poké-Pad and the Trainer Card.

“Thank you, Nurse Joy! I have one more request though. Could you please take care of my Pokémon?” Saffron asked.

“Of course! That’s what we’re here for!” Nurse Joy said, setting down a tray.

Saffron placed the Poké Ball containing Fletchling into it. Pikachu hopped onto the tray as well.

“You don’t keep Pikachu in its Poké Ball?” Nurse Joy inquired.

“No. She hates to be inside of a Poké Ball. She has ever since she hatched from her egg as a Pichu,” Saffron answered.

“I see. Well, that’s not something you see every day. Anyway, I should get to work. I’ll have your Pokémon feeling all better in no time,” Nurse Joy said as she left.

Saffron went over to the phone and called home.

“Hello?” Her older brother answered.

“Hey, Jeremy! It’s me,” Saffron said.

“Hey, Lil’ sis! How are you?” Jeremy said.

“I’m fine! I’m at the Camille City Pokémon Center.”

“Already? It took me and Lisa a week each to get there.”

“Well, I didn’t really stop anywhere. Pikachu and I kept traveling until we got here.”

“Where is Pikachu?” Jeremy asked.

“Nurse Joy is healing her. I caught a Fletchling! Pikachu was amazing!” Saffron beamed.

“A Fletchling, huh? Not bad. But you’ll have to do better than that. Fletchling should’ve been easy to catch because of Pikachu’s type advantage, especially with that Volt Tackle,” Jeremy reasoned.

“I know. I’ll catch more Pokémon. But right now I want to go and challenge the gym leader here to a gym battle.”

“A gym battle already? Don’t you think you should train a bit first? Fletchling is a new Pokémon and it’ll need some time to get used to you. Besides, Ester is tough. Poison-type Pokémon shouldn’t be taken lightly. Having the ability to poison your Pokémon and the immunity to that effect makes them dangerous opponents. You need to be at the top of your game,” Jeremy cautioned.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. Maybe I’ll just go and meet Ester, see what she’s like. I’ll challenge her to a battle when I’m sure that I’m ready,” Saffron said.

“That’s using your head! I have to go now. Lisa and I are working on a new experiment. Good luck!” Jeremy said.

“Thanks, big brother! Say hi to everyone for me!”

“Will do!” He then hung up.

“Saffron? Your Pokémon are all better now,” Nurse Joy announced. Saffron made her way over to the counter.

“Thank you, Nurse Joy.” She retrieved Fletchling Poké Ball. Pikachu jumped onto her shoulder.
Saffron bade Nurse Joy goodbye and headed out of the Pokémon Center.

“Fletchling, come out!” Saffron said, throwing the Poké Ball high up in the air. It opened and a white light came out, materializing into Fletchling. The little bird trilled and flew onto Saffron’s shoulder.

Saffron reached over and stroked Fletchling’s belly. “Hello, Fletchling. I’m Saffron and I’ll be your trainer. Let’s be the best of friends, ok?”

“Fletchling,” the little bird trilled.

“Come on, you two. Let’s go and check out the gym.”

The three of them headed over to the gym. It was a big metal building covered with all sorts of plants. There was a Seviper carved in the door. Saffron, Pikachu, and Fletchling entered. Saffron made her way over to a woman behind a desk.

“Good evening. I’m Saffron and I’d like to challenge the gym leader, Ester.”

“Good evening, Saffron. May I see your Trainer Card, please?” the woman asked.

Saffron presented her Trainer Card. The woman placed it into a slot in the computer. She then typed something on the keyboard. She took out the card and gave it back to Saffron.

“Everything looks good. I’ve registered you as a challenger. She is in a match and it will be the final one for a short while. I’m sorry to inform you that Ester will be leaving the gym temporarily to deal with a situation that needs her attention. It will take a while. You are welcome to challenge her when she returns,” the woman said.

“I understand, thank you. Would it be okay if I went to watch the match?” Saffron requested.

“Of course.”

Saffron and her Pokémon made their way into the arena. It was a grassy field with trees and bushes surrounding it. Vines grew through the branches of the trees. The walls and roof enclosing the arena were dark purple in colour. The match was just beginning. Saffron found that the challenger was none other than North. It wasn’t a surprise, though, as she knew he had made it here before her.

She looked over at the gym leader. Ester was dressed in a dark purple body suit. She had long black hair with dark purple streaks and a fringe at the front. She looked tough and she knew it. Saffron was glad that she had to wait before challenging the gym leader. It would give her lots of time to train with her Pokémon and maybe catch some more, as well. The referee stepped up onto a dais.

“The battle between the gym leader, Ester, and the challenger, North, is about to begin. Each side may only use two Pokémon and the battle is over when both of one side’s Pokémon are unable to battle. Only the challenger may substitute Pokémon. Battle begin!”

“Eevee, front and center!” North said, throwing a Poké Ball. Eevee came out. “Eevee!”

“Seviper!” Ester said, throwing a Poké Ball. A snake-like Pokémon came out. It was black with hexagonal markings from head to tail, small yellow bumps where it touched the ground and purple, scar-like markings. It had red fangs protruding from its upper jaw and red eyes. Its tail was blade-shaped and partially red. It was scrunched up like an accordion.

“You have the first move,” Ester said.

“Eevee, Swift.” Eevee opened its mouth and orange stars flew out towards Seviper. The snake-like Pokémon dodges it with astounding speed.

“Seviper, Poison Tail!” Seviper’s tail took on a purple glow and it sped towards Eevee, slamming its tail into it. Eevee went flying and slammed into a tree. It fell to the ground.

“Get up!” North commanded. Eevee stood shakily to its feet. “Quick Attack!” Eevee quickly ran towards Seviper.
“Dodge, then Bite!” Ester commanded. Seviper easily dodges Eevee’s attack. As Eevee ran past Seviper, it lunged and bit down on Eevee’s tail. Eevee cries out in pain.

“Eevee, Swift!” Facing Seviper, Eevee opening its mouth and fired orange stars at Seviper at close range. Seviper was hit hard and flew back, effectively dislodged from Eevee. “Tackle!” Eevee took advantage of Seviper’s recovery and Tackled. The move hit.

“Sludge Bomb, Seviper!” Ester commanded. Seviper fired a brown ball of sludge from its mouth. It hit Eevee and exploded. Eevee cried out.

When the smoke from the explosion cleared, everyone saw that Eevee had been poisoned. The poison hurt Eevee and took away energy.

“Eevee, use Bite!” North commanded.

Eevee ran towards Seviper. The serpentine Pokémon dodges easily. The poison took away more of Eevee’s energy.

“Seviper finish this with Venoshock!” Seviper opened its mouth and shot a poisonous green liquid at Eevee. The little gray Pokémon was drenched in it. The damaged was doubled because Eevee was poisoned and with one final cry, fainted.

“Eevee is unable to battle. Seviper wins!” the referee announced.

North called Eevee back, “Is that all you’ve got?” He then angrily put away Eevee’s Poké Ball and took out another. He threw it. “Onix, front and center!”

A huge Pokémon resembling a chain of boulders came out. It had a spine on its head and small black eyes beneath it. It gave a loud roar.

“Begin!” the referee shouted.

“Onix, Bind!” North commanded. Onix moved just as fast as Seviper and soon had the snake-like Pokémon bound. Seviper took damage.

“Seviper, get out of there! Use Sludge Bomb!” Seviper fired a ball of brown sludge at Onix’s face. It hit but, with Onix being resistant to Poison-type moves, did little damage.

“Humph! Onix, Rock Throw!” Onix roared and rocks fell onto Seviper. It was a critical hit. Seviper cried out. Onix let it go and it fainted.

“Seviper is unable to battle. Onix is the winner,” the referee announces.

Ester called Seviper back into its Poké Ball. “You battled well. Rest now.”

Ester returned Seviper’s Poké Ball to her belt and took out another. “Croagunk, let’s go!”

The ball opened and the white light materialized into a dark blue, frog-like Pokémon. Its yellow eyes were surrounded by black markings, expandable orange pouches were on its cheeks and it has flat white teeth. It has a black marking encircling its upper arms and chest with white bands around its chest. Its three fingers and toes were black with the exception of the center fingers which were orange.

“Begin!” the referee shouted.

“Onix, Bind!” North commanded.

“We’re not falling for that again! Jump up high, Croagunk.” Ester said. Groagunk jumped high into the air, effectively dodging Onix’s Bind.

“Ha, I was hoping you’d do that,” North smirked.

“What?!?” Ester exclaimed.

“Rock Tomb!” Onix became outlined in a white energy. It raises its head and multiple gray rocks also outlined in white energy form a ring around its head. The glow then fades and the rocks fall on Croagunk, slamming it to ground, hard, while lowering speed. Croagunk recovers.

“Astonish, Croagunk!” Groagunk raises its arms and makes a frightening face. Onix takes damage and flinches.

“Good, Croagunk, now use Feint Attack!” Croagunk jumps into the air. Onix looks up but Croagunk is nowhere to be found. Croagunk then reappears behind Onix and jabs it hard. Onix roars in pain. Croagunk lands on the ground.

“Onix, use Tackle.” Onix shoots forward with lightning-fast speed. It slams hard into Croagunk, who cries out in pain. The frog-like Pokémon is slammed into a tree.

“Keep using Tackle, Onix!” North commands. Onix shoots towards Croagunk again. Several of the Tackles hit. By the end, Croagunk has taken a lot of damage. It was panting hard.

“Alright, Onix, let's finish this! Bind!” Onix slithers towards Croagunk.

“Jump out of the way!” Ester commands. But Croagunk is too tired. Onix binds it.

“Rock Throw!” Raising its head, Onix roars and rocks fall onto Croagunk, who cries out in pain. Croagunk ends up barely standing.

“Tackle!” Onix quickly tackles Groagunk, slamming it into a tree. Croagunk faints.

“That’s it! Croagunk is unable to battle! Onix is the winner, therefore, the victory goes to the challenger, North,” the referee calls out.

North and Ester return their Pokémon to their Poké Balls.

“Nice work, Croagunk. You’ve earned a long rest,” Ester said. She then faced North.

“You battle with too much force. You may critically endanger your Pokémon if you continue battling this way,” Ester says with an edge in her tone. “Nonetheless, you have defeated me, therefore, you have earned the Barb Badge. Take it.” She held out a small box with a velvet pillow in it. On the pillow was a barb-shaped badge. North reached out and took it.

“Thanks. I’ll see you around,” he said. He then left the gym.

Saffron was amazed after watching the battle. Ester was very strong, especially Seviper. It was going to be hard to deal with that speed. Saffron thought about what Ester had said to North.
‘It’s true,’ she thought. ‘He does battle with too much force. He was always very forceful. I hope Eevee’s okay. If I know North, he’ll only want the best. He’ll be especially tough on Eevee after that loss.’

“Hello, can I help you?” Saffron was snapped out of her thoughts by Ester.

“Hi, my name is Saffron. I’ve come here for a gym battle,” Saffron said.

“I’m sorry but I won’t be taking any more challengers for a while. There is a crisis in the forest by the city I need to deal with first,” Ester said.

“I know, the secretary explained. But I don’t think I’m ready to challenge you yet. You’re very strong and I want to do some more training with my Pokémon before I come back,” Saffron said.

“Thank you for your kind words,” Ester smiled. “You’re very welcome to come back anytime you’re ready.”

The two said goodbye and Saffron headed back to the Pokémon Center with her Pokémon. They rented a room for the night and slept soundly, anticipating the day to come.

A friend is one of the best things you can have and one of the best things you can be.
