~There Was A Time
When I Was Alone
Nowhere To Go...
And No Place To Call Home~
The human had died several weeks ago... And, once Sans had returned with her soul, the Underground could finally be left behind. But we found the cost that came with the soul was more than we'd wished...after she had befriended us all, we found empty space in our souls at her departure. Sans suffered the most, the loss of his lover was more than he wanted to handle...and he refused to leave the Underground. Some of the monsters went above, most of us did not. Life has changed, we'd like to say for the better. But, it's a difficult thing to decide, what really is better. Monsters certainly get along better, our bond to our own kind has strengthened with the humans sacrifice. Love took a different meaning, and Hope increased for almost every monster. Reunited, Queen Toriel and King Asgore have began to create a more peaceful world for us. The Royal Guard has become a reinforcement for kindness and charity, and monsters found to hold hatred and aggressiveness are tended to with utmost kindness to change them. This human girl left an impact on us all that we could never have expected, and, we are grateful for that. We are grateful for a second chance.

Papyrus carried a bag of food back towards home, his arms bundled underneath the warm paper bag. Grillby never ceased to create some of the best food, even if Papyrus held his own spaghetti to a higher standard. He was more interested in what would make Sans happy, he had been invested in his brother for the last few weeks. Sans' Hope had dropped below what he'd ever seen. Even Alphys was stumped on how he was surviving with it. Papyrus encouraged him to sleep and to eat, hoping his HP may strengthen. So far, it had not worked.
The younger skeleton walked inside, squinting in the near black darkness. Only the faint glow of his brother's necklace offered any light, and barely reached beyond the couch.
"Sans, really, you can't lay here in the dark all day," Papyrus set the bag on the coffee table, using his magic to flick the light-switch on. He looked at his brother, his shoulders sagging. Sans looked at him with red tears rolling down his cheeks, his magic eye lit. "Another nightmare?"
Sans nodded, his gaze shifting away. His face flushed in what seemed to be embarrassment. Papyrus sighed and began unpacking the bag, wishing he could do more for Sans.
"Here, I have fries and ketchup for you. Don't argue, just eat it," Papyrus moved them closer to Sans, kneeling on the floor beside the couch. Sans sighed and sat up, his shaking hand reaching for the food.
"You don't have to baby me..." Sans whispered, sitting there with the ketchup in a hand.
"Obviously I do. Honestly Sans, what ever would you do without me?" Papyrus shook his head, looking up at his brother. He picked up a napkin, wiping away Sans' tears. "Now don't cry, please."
Sans' smile broadened a little, and he nodded, his eyes returning to their normal white color.
"Eat, and then go get some sleep, alright?" Papyrus stood up, setting a hand on his brother's shoulder. "I'll see you in the morning."
Sans nodded, half-heartedly digging into his fries.

The sound of thunder in the night woke Papyrus. He rubbed at his eyes, shifting onto his back with a sigh. The room was still dark, the alarm clock beside him reading 3:27 AM. For a moment he just lay there, watching the flashes illuminate the room occasionally.
He sat up as he heard cries from the other room, quickly growing suspicious. "Sans?" He called, moving the end of his bed and standing. The cries had grown silent and only the sound of the blizzard outside was heard.
Papyrus opened his door, walking towards his brothers room. He set his hand on the doorknob, slightly surprised when the door opened. It wasn't even shut fully, and Sans always kept it shut and locked. He frowned, trying to see into the dark room. "Sans? May I come in?"
He began to worry as no one answered. Sans wasn't a heavy sleeper, even if he slept often. He entered the room, reaching for the light. The bulb sparked, but it remained dark.
"Broken," he mumbled, looking for the light of Sans' necklace. He couldn't see its glow, meaning it was likely concealed by blankets. The flash of lightning disturbed the darkness, revealing a shape laying in the center of the room, a dark line jutting up from it.
"SANS?"

Undyne ran towards Snowdin, her breath coming in frosted huffs. The blizzard made it difficult to navigate, but she could now see the buildings dark shapes in the distance. It was very early in the morning when Papyrus had called her, his voice panicked and sobs wracking every word. She'd ran the entire way, wearing her pajamas and her hair down. It was urgent.
She burst through the front door. "PAPYRUS?!"
"Upstairs!" She heard him cry. She ran up the steps, bursting into the room. A lamp was set up on the floor, and Papyrus knelt beside it, his brother in his arms. Blood stained Papyrus's hands and shirt, and most of Sans' body. Undyne held her gasp, dropping beside them. The bone still remained lodged in Sans' chest.
"Good, you didn't remove it. Did you call Alphys?" Undyne tore strips from her shirt, applying pressure around the wound.
"Y-yes, she should be here soon," Papyrus looked dazed, his eyes hazy and filled with tears. Undyne looked at him, then down at what she was doing.
"Good. He hasn't begun to dust yet, there's still time," Undyne murmured, shifting Sans off of Papyrus and flat onto the floor. "Grab that pillow."
Papyrus obeyed, handing it to her. She propped Sans' head up with it, shaking her head. She removed the blood soaked strips of her shirt, taking the remainder of it off and pressing it against the wound.
"Get me towels," she ordered, watching as Papyrus ran from the room. She heard him speak to someone outside, before Alphys entered, holding a small medical kit in her arms.
"U-Undyne..." Her gaze lingered a moment before turning her attention to Sans, kneeling down beside her girlfriend. Alphys still wore her own nightgown, quickly digging through her kit.
"He's still bleeding, it's less though," Undyne murmured.
"Remove the bone, quickly...keep it straight as possible," Alphys took charge, pulling a large gauze pad from the kit.
Undyne moved and grabbed onto the bone, bracing a knee on the floor and pulling straight upwards. Blood gushed out before Alphys pressed the pad down firmly onto Sans. She taped it across his chest, moving and beginning to prepare a needle of something. Undyne set the bone aside, blood staining her hands.
"Here," Papyrus returned, thrusting out a stack of towels. Mettaton lingered behind him, sadness in his eyes. Undyne took a few of the towels, kneeling down and beginning to clean Sans off.
"Papyrus, get him a blanket. We can't move him yet," Alphys leaned over, pulling Sans' soul from his chest. The blue soul was fragmented, liquid dripping from it. Undyne felt sick, looking away.
"He shouldn't even be alive..." Undyne whispered.
"Heh..." Alphys stuck the needle into his soul, attacking it to a bag and holding that above his soul. She attacked it to a hook on his desk, looking back down at Sans. Undyne let out a relieved breath as his HP stabilized.
Papyrus knelt beside Undyne, setting a hand against his brothers face. "Why would he do this..."
Alphys looked at him, then back down, sitting back on her heels. "Depression can make you do scary things..." She sighed. "He likely missed Frisk, and he didn't want to anymore."
Papyrus wiped at his eyes, smearing blood across his face. "Selfish prick..."
Mettaton knelt beside him, setting a hand on his shoulder to comfort him. "The important thing is he's alive, and we'll all make sure he doesn't feel so lonely again."
Undyne nodded, looking at Papyrus. "Someone will have to be with him...always."
Papyrus nodded, taking his brothers hand. "I will...I won't leave him."
Alphys stood up, stretching. "Is there somewhere we can rest, Papyrus?"
He looked up in surprise, nodding quickly. "There's the couch, and my bed, I won't be using it."
She nodded, thinking a moment before leaving the room. Undyne stood as well, setting a hand over Papyrus' head. "You did good, Paps. You saved him."
"Heh...if the thunder hadn't woken me, I wouldn't have..." He murmured, looking up at her. Undyne smiled, turning and walking out of the room.
"Still looking out for him....eh Frisk?"

Alphys woke early, detaching herself from Undyne's tight embrace and going to check on Papyrus and Sans. Since he hadn't woken her, she hoped her sloppy IV had worked. She cracked open the door, peering inside. Mettaton and Papyrus were asleep on the floor, while Sans had sat up and watched them both, a fondness in his eyes. He looked over as the door squeaked.
"Dr. Alphys," he greeted, looking down. "I'd come over there, but."
She nodded understandingly, walking over to him. "You're really lucky that Papyrus found you..."
"Yeah, I realize that..." Sans sighed, looking up at her. "It's hard to fight it, y'know?"
"Better than anyone," Alphys nodded.
Sans looked away a moment, before back up at her. "Will you open that drawer, in my desk there?" He pointed.
She did, peering into it. A photograph sat inside, with a glowing Save Star on a chain. She picked them both up, sitting beside Sans and handing them over.
Sans put the necklace back on, looking at the photograph. Frisk's smile was the focus of the picture, her eyes covered by soft buttercup petals. They fell around her, twirling in a beautiful dance. The sunlight lit her hair, highlighting the brown locks. She was wearing Sans' jacket, the white hood snug around her face.
"She's beautiful," Alphys whispered.
"She always was," Sans agreed, turning the photograph over. "She made me write this, since she couldn't see to write it herself..."
Alphys read the small print, a little confused. "What is it?"
"A lullaby, she said. A human lullaby...she sang it to me, and when she passed, I sang it to her," Sans' smile broadened, a small chuckle escaping. "Cheesy, huh..."
Alphys wrapped her arms around him carefully. "No, Sans. It's beautiful."
He hugged her back, the weight of his head on her shoulder. "I miss her, Al..."
"I know, Sans. I'm sure she misses you too. You'll see her again...but now isn't the time," Alphys told him, rubbing his back.
"Thanks..." He sat back, grinning at her. "I'll be okay now...Papyrus needs me."
She smiled, setting a hand on his leg. "We all need you Sans, just as much as you need us."
"Yeah...I won't forget that." He looked out the window, the clear light shining in. "She wouldn't want me to."
