Around him, his party members gasped as they saw the carnage below.
People were clashing furiously, trying to gain the upper hand while the dragon tried to escape the binding.
The dragon.
He called it the embodiment of evil.
If that dragon had never existed… Well, he was sure another baddie would have stepped up to take its place.
He yelled a war cry and jumped off the cliff into the midst of the battle.
It was a symphony of swords, an orchestra of screams.
He couldn’t see anything through the thick haze of blood, but swung his axe furiously anyway.
Something got caught on his axe, and he brushed it away, not caring whether it was friend or foe. If this failed, they’d all die anyway.
He ducked under a spear and caught the owner in the chest with the end of his axe, knocking him back into a fireball. He laughed, and was caught off guard as a hammer swung out of nowhere knocking his helmet off and causing him to land facedown in the mud.
He was dazed for a second, then stood back up and looked at the bind.
It was breaking.
Crumbling to pieces like rust on what had once been a keen blade.
He cursed, then put the axe down.
There was no point fighting now.
This world would be destroyed.
The dragon roared as it freed itself from the last of its chains.
It swept down and burnt a scorch mark into the Earth. Its shriek was almost like the Earth itself screaming at the monstrosity.
Then he saw the blue light.
Could they possibly re-bind the dragon?
He watched with his breath caught in his throat as the light pushed the dragon back, forming a visible cage.
Other blue light was emerging from all over the world, striking the dragon and driving it deeper into the cage.
He whooped, certain it had succeeded.
Nobody could have anticipated what happened next.
The dragon simply shook the bindings off like they were nothing, then screamed, madder than ever.
It unleashed a wave of force that drove deep into the Earth, shaking its core like a piñata caught in a storm of blows.
He could feel it blowing him away.
His soul.
His body.
His mind.
Everything.
Then he remembered.
‘What am I doing, just giving up like this?’
He looked around at his party members, then straight in front of him.
There was a blue forcefield surrounding them, protecting them from the wave of force.
He turned, and saw the elder with his hands outstretched.
He almost smiled, but saw the strain in his eyes and saw that the shield was already crumbling. He noticed a blue light glowing around him, and he glanced in wonder as he and his party were transported elsewhere, where the dragon would not be able to reach them.
The elder smiled.
They wouldn’t be harmed there.
After all, he doubted even the dragon could have anticipated that he’d send the other to another world.
The dragon roared in anger and doubled its force.
Tears streamed down the elder’s face, but he smiled as he dropped the forcefield and closed his eyes.
