When I was a kid, I was a geek. For my tenth birthday, I got a beta version of a game called Pokèmon Misery Grey. Yes, Misery. But then again, it was a beta, and it was probably mis-translated, so the title didn't worry me much. Anyway, I put the cartridge in the slot, scanned the manual for the forty-fifth time, and hit the 'on' button at long last.

My Game Boy booted up, and there was a little animation of a boy and a cool dragon thing. From what I had read in the manual, the creatures in the game were Pokèmon. The menu popped up, and I looked at my choices;
> New Game
> Continue Game
Time: 23:39

The 'Continue Game' option confused me. This was a beta game. I was a beta tester. I was supposed to be the first person to play this, right? I selected 'Continue Game', figuring the creators must have played it to check for major glitches or something.

I wish I hadn't.

The game didn't have any glitches right away. At least, none I noticed. But then again, I had only been playing for a few minutes. So far so good. I recorded that in my journal, which I would re-write and send to GameFreak when they wanted reports on how it was going.

Anyway, I got a feel for the game pretty soon, thanks to the manual. I logged onto the PC to access my Pokèmon, because there was only one Pokèmon, a Slowpoke named Loveless, that was level five. The other Pokémon in the boxes were all level infinity. Yeah, you heard me. Level. Infinity. One thing's for sure, whoever played this beta before me was good at the game. Or, this could be a glitch. I decided to record it, just in case it was a glitch, and not some unlocked feature, and continued on my way.

I had battled with Loveless, and she was a poor fighter. I ran away from a level one Rattata with five hp left. Loveless was useless, and she couldn't learn any of the moves I had on the TMs in my bag. I decided to give up on Loveless, because she wouldn't level up, either. I saved the game, and then released her. But then a box popped up.

Loveless doesn't want to go!

I had two choices;
> Try Again
> Leave Alone

I selected 'Try Again', but another box popped up, and there was the soung of a crying Pokèmon.

TRANSLATION: Master! Please, I don't want to go. I love you, Master.

There were two choices;
> Force Her Out
> Leave Alone

Of course, I selected the first option. I figured this was nothing special, and that it popped up for all the Pokèmon that were in the process of getting deleted. There was a loud screech that nearly made my ears bleed, and the screen blacked out. Then, I saw...nothing much, really. The screen showed fog rolling around, and it took a few minutes for a flashlight to click on. The fog cleared, and showed my character holding a little flashlight in a creepy, grey room. It climbed up the stairs, and sinister music began to play. There was a giggle, like a little girl, and my character stopped. The battle sequence began, but the creepy music continued. My opponent?

A slowpoke named Loveless.

A box popped up. "Hello, trainer, miss me?" There was another giggle, but now it was terrifying. Quickly, I wrote all this down in my journal. I had two choices that popped up in the box;

> "Loveless? Is that you?"
> "Go away."

I selected 'Go away.'

There was more laugher, and another box, contaning Loveless's reply. "I see you still don't care about poor Loveless. Do you know what I've been through, Master? We both knew I had no chance by myself, Master. I died in the wild. But I still loved you. So I searched for you. And now I've found you. So we can be together," she stopped to giggle, "...forever."

My responses popped up;
> "I'm sorry, Loveless."
> "Leave me alone."

I chose the first option, and Loveless giggled again. "It's okay, Master. I am forgiving. Now, I want you to tell me something. If you tell me it, we can be together. And I'll even make your death painless, if you wish."

My responses popped up;
>"I love you, Loveless."
> Try to run

Death? Okay, this started to scare me. I selected run, stopping only to scribble down some notes.

"Silly master, you cannot run."

My options;
>"I love you, Loveless. "
> "Why are you doing this?"

I selected the second option.

"Master, I am unloved. Everyone hates Slowpokes. Even my pokèdex entry says I'm a dopey pokèmon. You were all I had to live for. And when you turned away, it broke my heart. But I love you so much that I'll put that aside, if you agree to stay with me."

> "Yes, I'll stay with you."
> Exit to main menu

I selected the second choice, and gasped as I saw what it said under 'Time';
17:00 Time's running out, Master. *giggle*

Quickly, I turned my GameBoy off and hid it away. It was three days before I played on it again. It immediately showed Loveless.

"Master, your faithful servant has waited. Waited for three days. Please, stay with me."

> Yes
> No

I picked 'No'. Why on earth would I say yes? I was a ten year old, after all. This clearly angered Loveless, though.
"Master, I am patient, but my patience is waining. Please say yes, or else I might have to force you."

> Yes
> No

I chose the second, and my GameBoy blacked out. Then, my trainer's sprite was tied to a chair. Loveless was holding a knife. "Master?"

The game chose my answer for me. "Yes?"

"Why won't you love me?" The screen blacked out, and there was a scream coming from my GameBoy. I tore the game out of my Game Boy, and stamped on it. And then it was over. My nightmare was just a dream. Or so I thought...

A month or so after the incident, GameFreak sent a survey. I filled out the survey honestly. The last question was probably the hardest to answer, 'Did you enjoy playing Pokèmon Misery Grey?' I glanced at my Gameboy. It was sitting on my desk, where I was taking the survey. I looked at the trash can that held the remains of my cartridge. My answer?

'No.'

Then, my Game Boy turned on, and there was a giggle coming out of the speakers.. "Master, didn't you enjoy our game?"
