"That name does not belong on your filthy tongue, caitiff. Your words are nothing in comparison to the damage you have wrought."

Adele was shocked, to say the least. (an impressive feat— few people were able to make her feel anything)
This…buffoon? She acted like uttering a name was some great offense, while a lightchaser quite literally bit her weapon. And the “damage” Seraphina had caused? RuoXi—the name she now knew— was leveling half the city. It was embarrassing, really, that an Ame on a rampage—at the fullest level of their power— was so easily contained by a stray Vie.

Avery was beginning to respect LeQi as intelligent, but her possessiveness was clouding her judgement.

But she did pose a good question— why did this oddly familiar woman know the name of a noblewoman's Ame?

***

Seraphina but her lip. She so carelessly messed up— a random Vie shouldn't know the name of RuoXi. And the daughter of a nobleman shouldn't have forgotten the weakness of an opposing house. No matter who she was, Sera or Maddie, this was a reprehensible mistake for both.

She took a deep breath. This didn't have to mean her cover was blown, not if she played her cards right. Suddenly, her heart ached. Cards—- cards and Ace and Maddie and safety.

Seraphina shook herself out of the spiral. Such thoughts only led back to that night.

“Of course, miss. Might there be a way I could make it up to you? Help heal your Ame?” Sera but her lip as soon as the words left her mouth. There was no way LeQi Liu would let her near RuoXi.

This was stupid, anyway. Seraphina hadn't done anything but contain a rouge. RuoXi was the one who caused the harm.

Nonetheless, she was trying to calm the situation.
“Truly, miss, I'll do anything to make it up to you. I was only trying to protect the city, not harm them. I would hate for us to have to become enemies.”

They already were, once before, but she doubted LeQi recognized her.

Name: Mikayla Browns

Gender: female

Age: 17

Birthday: May 12

Personality:Mika is bubby, extroverted, and optimistic. She's relatively intelligent, though she won't be winning any awards anytime soon. She thinks with her heart over her head, generous and empathetic to the last. Mika is the type of person to refuse to kill a cockroach, opting to carefully carry it outside. Don't mistake her soft heart for weakness, though, because she'll fight for what she thinks is right.

Personality Type: ENFP

Description: [x]

History:
Growing up in a rural village, Mika was always outdoorsy, loving animals but especially horses and barn cats. Ironically, she was a tomboy growing up, with only a few neighbors' sons for company. As she grew, she became more feminine, feeling far more comfortable with things labeled as "girly".

Though she was homeschooled through elementary and high school, she moved to a metropolis for university. Her major is undeclared so far, but she plans to study as a veterinarian.

She was placed in the correctionam art class for starting a disruptive verbal argument with a fellow student who made fun of a boy with a mental disability.

Sexuality:...UHHH straight

Adele sat uncomfortably in the carriage. She was the first to arrive, alongside Seraphina, yet everyone was too busy to notice them. She wondered if she should introduce herself, since she wasn’t actually a lightchaser.

She cleared her throat to begin. “Hello,” — several of the members startled at the foreign voice. They really did have the observancy of blind pigeons, didn’t they? — “I’m Adelaine Avery. I assisted in the fight today, and hoped that I could get a position as a lightchaser, since–” Avery gestured vaguely in the direction of RuoXi, “the rampage today has destroyed my living quarters and place of work.”

Seraphina startled from her brief nap. “Oh, right, of course— um, everyone, this is Avery, and she assisted me in arriving at the carriage, given my… state,” Sera left out the part about how hurt she felt when the group she was with simply dashed off as she recovered from her paralysis. Lumiere had healed her, but she was still in no state to be leaping from rooftops. “And, uh, I believe she was with RuoDie when RuoXi was trapped in my cage?” She turned to LeQi, holding the Ame—why on earth were they coming back to HQ with the lightchasers? And why did LeQi give her such a bad feeling? — “Apologies if I caused any injury to your Ame.”

Adele was relieved that Sera interjected— when interacting with people, she struggled to use Pathos, her inability to show emotion shining through.

Adele leaped from rooftop to rooftop, blue hair whipping her face.

“... a carriage for your retreat…//// leftmost entrance, grand clocktower…” crackled on Seraphina’s radio. Adele spared not a glance back, her power enough to keep the Lightchaser afloat and trailing behind. Though it would save energy to carry the woman, she hated physical contact. Her hands had the strangest habit of phasing—

“Um, Avery, did you hear that? We’re to meet at the spot where the alley intersects the street by the clock tower!” Seraphina called to her escort.

“Of course,” Adele replied. Being an Ames, her senses were naturally heightened— a detail the red-haired woman must have forgotten.
…It was an odd thing, thought Adelaine, that this Seraphina looked like a perfect opposite of Avery. While Avery was thin and lanky, Sera was short and curvy. Adele’s eyes were the near perfect color of Sera’s hair, and vice versa.
It was a nice contrast, perhaps. An interesting coincidence.

***
In minutes, the girls had arrived at the carriage—the first people there.
Sera was oddly out of breath—she had been more anxious during the journey than she expected. Jumping across rooftops in zero gravity was not something she was used to. Still, she had regained enough strength to lower herself in a seat of the unassuming vehicle—far more spacious than it looked.

Sitting across from her recent acquaintance, she took a moment to survey the surroundings outside the window. The city was partially reduced to rubble— though the damage was not as bad as it could have been.
partially thanks to me, she flattered herself. Though she wished she could have done more; if she could have just held on— but she had seen that strange, terrifying hallucination. RuoDie had said the woman beside her was Avery, presumably the one that sat in the carriage alongside Sera right now. But that wasn’t what Sera saw— the girl who reached through the cage, promptly disappearing— taunting, terrifying, and forever intangible— looked nearly nothing like the child beside Sera. Though one similarity they shared were those unsettling blood eyes…

Her teammates were all moving on, swift and able-bodied as they were. Though the paralysis was mostly wearing off, Seraphina was still definitely not nimble enough to follow them. She groaned as she rose to her feet, Lumiere’s healing earlier being the only reason she could stand.

There was a twinge of annoyance, offense, in her gut at the fact that she had just pretty singlehandedly halted major destruction, but her teammates had just bounded away, leaving her somewhat hopelessly immobile.

*

Avery had been observing the team’s actions, deducing nothing particularly interesting. Unfortunately, they were moving quickly back to their base, and her clunky drops onto rooftops weren’t suited to covert following. If Adele floated down to street level and attempted to follow from there, she wouldn’t have an easy visual and would be exposed.

Quite the conundrum.

Though for whatever reason, the vaguely familiar red-haired girl seemed to struggle with keeping pace— the perfect opportunity. Avery had established her allegiance during the fight, and assisting a struggling Lightchaser back to base would be the perfect excuse to follow them and apply for a job.

Adele floated over to the rooftop on which the woman stood.
“Greetings,” She called, calm and polite, “I’m a friend of the lightchasers. Might you need assistance getting back to your base?”

*
Seraphina startled at the voice—she hadn’t heard anyone approach. “Oh, yes, I would appreciate that,” she said, turning to the voice. “A friend of the lightchasers, you said? And what might I call you?” Sera asked, surveying the girl up and down. Her golden-blonde hair fell just past her narrow shoulders, framing an intimidating red glare. Despite her youth, the girl was surprisingly tall.

“Adelaine, and you?” answered the strangely familiar girl.
Seraphina offered a semblance of a friendly smile. “Seraphina, but you can call me Sera. I truly appreciate the help.”
She couldn’t hide her shock when she began to float, somehow trailing behind Avery as the girl bounded from rooftop to rooftop.

But for Sera, the most curious thing was how in the midday light, Adelaine’s hair seemed to betray flecks of blue.

Seraphina woke up in the alleyway, unaware that she had even passed out. Except the alleyway was no longer an alleyway, but instead a rooftop, and she was surrounded by He Lei and RuoDie. Suspiciously, the banging in her head had subsided, and the crashing of buildings had ceased, even though her cage had disappeared.

It took her a few moments to notice Lumiere and piece things together, her mind slowly de-fogging. Sera immediately sat up—-”You used your power on me!?” she exclaimed to the Lightchasers captain. Lumiere almost never touched anyone with her ability, though Sera wasn’t exactly sure why. The calm and logical captain surely had a good reason, meaning Seraphina possibly endangered him by forcing him to heal her. Not to mention the fact that dispelling the cage and releasing the Ame could have been catastrophic for the city.

She stammered. “What— I’m so so sorry guys; I put all of you at risk— I should have held the cage longer; I could have held the cage longer but—” her spiraling was interrupted by a thought. She could have held the cage longer, but then she saw her.

She had hallucinated Ace before, of course, but never like that. Never as a teenager, never with her golden eyes gone. What was different this time? Creating the cage shouldn’t have been difficult enough to cause a vision of that scale, even with the rampaging Ame inside, not when she used to be able to—

“RuoDie, who were you talking to, on that rooftop? When the Ame was in my cage?”
There was no way she hallucinated that part, right?

***

Avery took a deep breath. Even from a kilometer away, she felt the shape of the Ame change— it must have gone into weapon form. This meant that its corresponding Vie had finally come and tamed it, and the gravity could be released.

The civilians had long since been evacuated, likely the work of the remaining Lightchasers. Adele had been simply moving the rubble into nice, neat piles, clearing the streets.

She heard the routine clanking of the police approaching—late and useless, as always. Unfortunately, that was probably the Lightchasers’ cue to leave; the vigilantes probably weren’t on lovely terms with the police. But if they left, it would be difficult to find them again, and her job prospects would be demolished. Adele gently placed the final chunk of concrete into the pile, then traversed the rooftops, remaining out of sight.

Finally, she stumbled upon an impromptu meeting of the organization— a white haired boy with an air of confidence, the woman from earlier, a blonde, mischievous looking child—who seemed 13, at maximum, but his posture and stance suggested otherwise— and an oddly familiar, plain-looking woman with short red hair who was laying on the ground.

Adele decided to remain in the background, observing, until she could follow them to their base and formally apply for a position.

Adele felt a brief moment of relief at the woman's smile. As long as she didn't hate Avery, there was still a chance to join their organization. Though the job she had been given was trivial, she supposed it was best to prove her loyalty.

As the Lightchasers leader bounded away with someone who was presumably her Ame, Avery turned to look at the person in the clear cage.

An odd feeling flickered in her stomach— something that resembled understanding; empathy.

This cage was familiar— not the clear glass prism, but the state the Rouge was in. The whispers in the back of your mind, overlapping and interlocking, weaving into a prison of your own making. The endless running from something that you would never escape; a futile battle against the perfect stranger that knew you too well.

Something in Avery's gaze softened, a near imperceptible change, as the Ame thrashed and fought. She knew from the Lighchaser's attempt that words had no effect. Calming the person down without a Vie was impossible. Her hand drifted through the cage, briefly touching the Rouge, and attempt at conveying a thousand words she didn't know how to say. A thousand moments from a girl that knew the feeling of dying alive.

And then the moment was over, the brief contact with her emotions was gone. Avery swiftly departed, off to fulfill the task she had been given.

*****

Sweat beaded on Seraphina's forehead, mixing with steady tears that flowered down her face. Caging the Ame was taking a toll.

But she was almost sure she could hold on until the other Lightchasers came, confident that she could finally be enough. Until she saw the personification of sin.

Seraphina had never been a good runner— born a weak Vie, it was never her strong suit. Somehow, she had fooled herself that she was fast enough, strong enough to outrun her guilt. It wasn't her fault. She did what she had to. She was a savior goddamnit, not a murderer.

But then the golden-eyed girl appeared, the beautiful gems on her face ruined, replaced by an ugly red. The Golden Eyed Girl, or rather, what the golden eyed girl would have become, stood by Sera's illusion, floating on nothing, ghost that she was. The Golden Eyed Girl reached through the cage, taunting Sera. And then she was gone. Again. As always.

A bloodcurdling shriek echoed through the remnants of Chinatown as the cage disappeared, as the illusionist in the alleyway was no longer mature and loving Seraphina, but the immature and terrified girl before.
The girl who ran.
The girl who killed.
The girl who buried her past under a new name and a new life.
The girl who just wasn't fast enough.

Avery's eye twitched in mild frustration. She just knew this woman had to be a Vie.

‘Oh it's not the Ame’s fault, don't hurt it!!’ was a familiar line.
How in the fvck does it matter whose fault it is??? The person is an immediate threat.

But no matter how emotional and illogical this woman was, she was a leader of the Lightchasers, and angering her was quite counterproductive.

Seeing that the Ame was unaffected by the limit in their motion, she released the gravity altogether. Adele floated down to the cage, where the woman was reaching through it. Interesting. Furthermore, there was no hesitation, no testing, as if she knew it was an illusion. This further confirmed Adele’s theory that the mirage was the power of a Lightchaser.

“Rest assured Madam, I bear you no ill will and only seek to aid you and this” She glanced at the cage, “... suffering individual, whose, um, affliction, has destroyed my home and place of work. It is of utmost importance that your team does not waste any time in bringing the Vie over. I may assist in transportation, if you like,” Avery stated, in her best attempt at a peace offering.

***

Seraphina’s jaw clenched at the Ame’s strength. It had the power of a terrified animal running from a predator, a past. It was a scene she’d seen before. Sera pitied the Vie that would have to calm the rouge down. She was quite familiar with the toll it took.

The Ame bashed against the cage once more, and Sera let out and anguished scream.

She tilted her head slightly, her ear pressing down on the talk button on the radio that she strategically placed earlier.
“Lumiere, RuDie, please hurry!” She choked through a sob. “I'm barely holding on!”

Earlier, Avery wasn't able to make out the Lightchasers’ conversation, being so high above them, but judging by the way they surrounded this woman, she must be the leader. And if Adele wanted any chance at securing room and board, or at least payment, at this organization, it would not do to anger their commander.
Additionally, with so many powerful Vies, one of them must be able to summon my memories Said a voice in the back of her head.

All in all, her current objective was to join this vigilante group, and preferably keep their leader satisfied, no matter how irrational her decision.

Adele released half the pressure on the rouge, effectively making them feel twice as heavy as usual but not harming of dragging them down. Of course, the ideal course of action was to knock the Ame unconscious or kill them, but what the commander says, goes. Using her remaining power, she launched herself in the woman's direction, appearing behind her.

“I don't understand why you insist on protecting this harbinger of Chaos, but I've released the majority of the pressure on them. They can move, but will find it difficult to jump or make sudden attacks,” She said, by means of truce. “I'm Avery, by the way. Or Adele. Or Robin. Whichever you prefer.” She stated, in a clearly extroverted display of camaraderie (she hoped. People weren't really her strong suit.)

bingo.

The shadow figure was paused on one of Seraphina’s buildings. She wasn't sure what to do— ideally, she should wait for the other Lightchasers, but no officers seemed to be in sight. And even if they arrived, they wouldn't be able to reach the rooftops— only a single person could interact with an illusion at a time.

Maddie…I'm scared…
Seraphina grimaced as the pawing at her leg grew stronger.
Maddie……where am I? Maddie called a child's voice.

Burning tears began to spill from her eyes.
Focus, Sera. The other Lightchasers can't reach the building, but bringing it to the ground is a liability. Think, Sera, think!!

In an instant, the illusory buildings disappeared and a cage formed around the rouge Ame. Clear as glass and indestructible—with a single spade imprinted on each side of the cube.

The voices quieted. Perhaps the hallucination of the golden-eyed girl still lurked around the alleyway, but Seraphina didn't dare check.

********

Avery knew from the second the illusions appeared that they were simply mirages. She had thrown a simple pebble at the building and had witnessed it bounce off, but she sensed the pebble still in motion, direction unchanged. She couldn't spot the Vie in control of the massive image, but whoever it was had to be a Lightchaser.

The odd thing was, the shadow figure had jumped on a building and it didn't shatter, like every previous example. Perhaps there were multiple agents at work.

And more Lightchasers helping meant more Lightchasers watching, ergo, a higher chance of acceptance into said vigilante organization.

Being so wrapped up in her thoughts, Adele almost didn't notice the mirages disappear in wisps of colored fog, replaced instead by a glass cage, encasing the rouge.

Ignoring the sudden pang at seeing the marking of a single spade, Avery seized the opportunity.

She threw herself onto a large, visible rooftop, and in a dramatic display of power, amplified the force of gravity on the figure —(taking notice of the fact that she could not apply force to the cage— another illusion, perhaps?)--- by 50%, effectively amplifing the Acceleration due to Gravity from a normal 9.8 to a 14.7; pinning the figure to its spot without knocking it unconscious.
