Duskwind looked longingly after Hawkpool as he watched the tip of her tail disappear into the bramble tunnel. He shook his head, and looked back to Fallentree. " Yeah, we ought to get a good idea of their numbers at least. Perhaps if there aren't that many of them, we could just flush them out," he said, scratching the ground lightly with one claw.

Sunkit nodded, wishing she got the chance to know these strong cats of the past. " How did Flamestar become leader?" she asked, not quite wanting story time to be over yet.

" Well, I know I would be scared if I saw a clan of warriors coming after me, " Duskwind said, with a mischievous glint in his eye. He noticed the Pineclan cats gathering nearby, getting ready to return to the mountains. He glanced at Hawkpool, but looked away before she could notice him.

Dawnpelt nodded, " Thank you, Fallentree. If any other cats ask you what you're doing, tell them I'm sending out extra border patrols. I'd rather not worry the rest of the clan, " she said.

Sunkit gasped, " Running away? So he left to become a rogue on purpose?", she asked in shock.

Almost on cue, Duskwind padded through the entrance to the camp, carrying two desert rabbits in his jaws. The sun was low in the sky, casting long shadows throughout the camp. The orange light reflected in his Duskwind's eyes, as he wordlessly carried his prey to the fresh-kill pile. " Huh? Who in Starclan are you??," Duskwind meowed, as he saw Dusty grab one of the rabbits. Dusty's fur bristled as he carried one of the rabbits into the elder's den, casting fearful looks at Duskwind. Duskwind looked around the camp, baffled, hoping someone would enlighten him.

Dawnpelt looked away, a mild look of concern on her face. " He'll come back, eventually. I don't want you to leave until just before dawn tomorrow, anyway. Rest tonight, " she said. " This mission is reconnaissance only - I don't want you getting into any fights if at all possible, " she said. " I want to know how many rogues have banded together with Sandfeather, and I want to know where the rogue cats have been living." If they live together in any sense at all, Dawnpelt thought to herself.

Sunkit's eyes widened, " Wow! He must have been a really strong warrior, " she said, imagining a lone cat fighting in her mind.

A cold wind blew into the cave, ruffling her black fur, as she stared at the mountain looming on the horizon. " Are loners like rogues?" Sunkit asked quietly. She still wasn't sure how to feel about the strange cat that had come to their camp that day.

" It's alright, he seems a bit...senile." Dawnpelt said, glancing at Dusty, who had finished his bird and was eyeing the fresh-kill pile again. " He doesn't appear to be a threat. But, he may know something useful about the rogue cats." she said, her tail swishing the ground. " Which brings me to my point - I would like you, Feathercloud, and Duskwind to go on a stealth mission into the twoleg place. We need know more about these rogues, " she said.

Andromeda stared at the book as Kat flipped through the pages. What I wouldn't give to know how to read better..., Andromeda silently scolded herself. " Hey, what's that?", she asked, as a Kat settled on a page with a drawing of some sort of mountain on it. The mountain was split, with two sharp peaks rising above the rest. Andromeda couldn't make out the text, but it appeared to be slightly smudged or faded.

Sunkit snuggled up to Ashpelt, looking at him with curiosity and interest. It was hard to imagine a time before her parents were alive. How long has Desertclan been here?, she wondered.

Dawnpelt flicked her tail in annoyance as she watched the black rogue cat eat. Perhaps I should try questioning him after he's full and content..., she thought. " If you think of anything else, I'd love to hear more, " she mewed, getting to her paws. Dusty glanced at her, nodding slightly, and resumed eating. Dawnpelt sighed and walked towards where Fallentree and Feathercloud were speaking. " So, picked up a stray?," she meowed.

Sunkit rubbed against Ashpelt's front legs, " We won't fall asleep, we're top excited! Please, just tell us this story," she said, giving her best doe eyes to Ashpelt.

Dawnpelt padded over to where Dusty was eating his thrush. He looked up warily as she approached him, " What? This is mine," he grumbled. Dawnpelt flicked an ear as she sat by him, " I'm not here to take your food - we don't do that in the clan," she said evenly. Dusty gave her a suspicious look before continuing to eat. Dawnpelt spoke up again, " I heard you met cats in the twoleg place. " she mewed. " Do you think you could tell me more about them?" she asked calmly. Dusty gave her an annoyed look. " They were dirty and rude," he said simply, taking more bites of his meal.

Dawnpelt smirked, " If Ashpelt tells you a story, you need to promise me you'll help him finish re-mossing the warrior's den. " Hmpf, very good..." Dusty nodded and headed towards the fresh-kill pile without another word. Hunting had become harder for him lately and he was hungrier than he wanted to admit. He grabbed a thrush from the pile and did his best to eat slowly. Can't let these desert cats think im weak..., he thought in between bites.

Dawnpelt brushed her tail along Ashpelt's side. " How did apprentice duty go? " she mewed, glancing at her kits as they filed into the nursery. " Seems your work got interrupted, " she said with amusement.
