The biggest drawback to this is it makes life harder when someone is trying to "snipe" an auction

i.e. when there's a high value pokemon up (ditto, shiny mew, etc), and people are trying to get it in the last few seconds, it's always the person with the highest bid at the last second that wins

And sniping is a fun, if annoying part of the auction process.

For someone with slower internet this popup box could take more than 5 seconds to load, and when they are trying to win an auction, those last 10 seconds are essential for deciding what to bid, and clicking to get your bid through at the last moment with a slow internet's sending time

Mostly because this is a site all about collecting EVERYTHING
-There's rewards for finishing the main dexes, there's incentive to get everything.

Plus, how would this be determined? Only a chance if you're premium, or a mod? A chance between all users who are active? If it was a contest beforehand, you'd just get people making double accounts to get it or something

You've said the exact reason though - it's a side quest, and non-essential to your pokeheroes experience so far.

It isn't just going to be handed to you when so many others manage to finish it each time (5 times you get golden pokeballs, the last time you get retro magikarp)

and there's ways around it if you're not that active.

-You could collect and use rare candies, as silverstar said
-Do a hashtag contest/giveaway for people to feed your pokemon berries
-Be somewhat active and interact when you can
-Pay attention to x2 days, and make sure people interact with your pokemon on those days. (With the hashtag contest possibly)

And 50 levels in 12 hours is a tad overestimating, the highest I've seen by the time the pokemon is taken back is around level 200 - and you have a week to get higher than that
