❄️lucian arbred's pov🕊️

Miyako was here now... And Setsuna, and Solaro too...

Lucian stared at Akora's lifeless body for a moment, wishing he could dare to believe she was just injured. But the utter stiffness, not even the slightest twitch, not even the softest rise and fall of her breath... She was gone. And he knew it.

Poor Solaro... She had known Akora the most, the longest. This must have been utterly devastating to see. Lucian knew what it was like... When he lost Kathy, it was like... A huge part of him was gone. Just utterly, completely disintegrated.

She looked so peaceful, but he knew it wasn't what she would have wanted. To go so soon, in such a brutal way. They had cleaned her up the best they could, but every time Lucian looked at her, in that coffin, laid down in one of those dresses she would have loved to wear... He could still hear her screaming. He could still see her bloodied head, the shock on her face, he could hear the gunshot...

And he hadn't been there to protect her, to save her. And that beautiful brain, with the faintest of hopes for the future, dreams of becoming a doctor, of being able to help so many people, to learn so much... Obliterated.

He was wearing a tidy black suit, black, like how his world had turned to black, as they said their farewells before she was lowered into the ground. Gone far too soon. His father... Hadn't said a word. He'd just stood there... Silently. Lucian could only guess what he might have been thinking.

And she was gone, just like that. And life just had to go on. No matter what happened, no matter how many people died, you couldn't do anything about it. Life would just go on.

Lucian had to do everything he could... To prevent that from happening again. But some people, you just couldn't save.

"...Solaro, I'm so sorry for your loss."

It was all he could say. Those cliché bouts of words that people would always drawl out, in an attempt to comfort you. She's in a better place now. She's proud of you. This pain won't last forever.

But the words caught on his tongue, and he couldn't say any more of them. This was cruel. This whole situation was cruel. Everyone... Was doomed to lose those that mattered most. Who could do this to someone?

It was just how life worked... Lucian knew that. He could feel this ringing in his ears, a ringing that wouldn't go away.

Sawyer was walking over to Setsuna and Miyako, reaching out a hand to them both. "Hey, friends! Need... Help getting up?" They were tilting their head.

Lucian could hear, but the words were all blurring together. His head throbbed, his heart throbbed. He felt so sick. He felt like... He had been the one who had killed Akora. By not being there to save her, from whoever did this.

My fault, my fault, my fault.

Death... Followed you everywhere. Everywhere you went.

It was just a part of life.

Cadence Laurier's POV

"I wholeheartedly agree."

Cadence smiled slightly. Now they could get away from that lizard-tongued maniac.

"I suppose dinner is off the table?"

She paused. "Does it not fit into your schedule anymore? If so, that's alright, I suppose."

But of course, Cadence had the feeling that there might be something he wasn't telling her. Something Michon had been intending to get to... That he didn't want her to know about. She wasn't all too sure where she was getting this feeling from, but for some reason, it sounded right.

And now he was scurrying off after the little janitor. As curious as she was to see where this went, she knew that she had better get started with her urgent work.

"Well. I think it's best that I should go do my work now. Perhaps I'll see you later, Michon."

She headed off to her office, curious what he might have wanted with that janitor... But she must prioritize results over her own childish curiosities.

Eloi Torres's POV

"Eloi Torres. That's a nice name. I'm Niwa Atsushi... another detective, I guess. You like old superhero stuff?"

"O-Oh! Than... Thank you. Your name is nice... Too." Then his face flushed with embarrassment, and he pulled his hat down overtop of it. "S-Sorta, I guess, uh... I-- saw some of that... Ancient stuff and... I thought it was... Kinda cool, it's- umm- dumb, really. I shouldn't have brought it up."

He could already hear the echoing laughter inside his head as he buried the comic books in his bag.

"You still like that stuff?"

"What a NERD! People stopped making that YEARS ago!"

"The robots already do that kind of thing. It's not that impressive!"

"Get your head out of the clouds, idiot."

"What are you, eight years old?"

"Umm... What are-- what are you into?" Eloi asked with a forced smile. I should just agree with everything he says. It should... Make things easier. I think... Does he think it's stupid too? I just... Thought they were cool.

Laurence Walton's POV

Laurence was thrown back against the wall, about as much as he was taken aback at the fact that not only was this girl a rambling moron, but also a delinquent as well. He let out a small indignant gasp as he felt at his jaw and attempted to get to his feet.

"Of all the uncouth--" He cut himself off and shook his head. He must not let this... Lunatic make a fool out of him. "What's your problem? Have you no civility?" He dusted himself off. "It seems almost that you didn't evolve with the rest of our society. Have you some sort of 'sad backstory', like your parents don't give you enough attention, so you feel the need to provoke everyone you meet?" he scoffed.

What am I even doing? I should just get to work. But this girl could be a seriously dangerous individual. She needs to be contained.

Cadence Laurier's POV

"Stay."

She was a little surprised at Michon for thanking her for a moment, before merely brushing it off and saying, "Ah, I see. Thank you for informing me of the nature of the situation."

"He might not be my senior for much longer. After all, there's been talk of a promotion for me. The ceremony tonight might just be the start of my increased responsibility."

How comforting.

"Laurier, would you like to accompany me to dinner? The orientation will begin at 7... we still have an hour to catch a meal."

Cadence considered this for a moment, unsure of what the nature of his invitation was. However, it might prove to be a useful endeavor, and she could think of no reason to refuse.

"Alright. That sounds... Agreeable."

"Ah, that marks the end of that. Hey, Yu-Yu! Wanna hit some fast food with me? These bores are probably going to some expensive ass authentic restaurant, but I figured you'd understand the importance of the fried maybe-chicken to a human's diet."

Oh, yes. Mawer being unbearably irritating. What else was new?

…she prattled off a lot more dialogue that was so irrelevant and so infuriating that Dorky literally didn’t write it here because all it did was make Cadence want to pummel the other head detective’s face.

“Michon. I think we should just get to our work for now.” Then, she lowered her voice. ”...and get far away from… that maniac.”

For both their sakes, seriously. With her prattling on and on, how was anybody supposed to get anything done?

Cleaning supplies. Some kiddo here was asking about cleaning supplies. Why did they have so many janitors at this building anyway? Ah, she supposed that cleanliness was significant to organization, and organization was one of the key parts of working here. So maybe it was relevant, to a point.

God. No more about fatty foods this, fatty foods that. Pretty head. Nah, the only way her head would look pretty is if it was NO LONGER ATTACHED. That'd be a pretty sight.

She needed to get to work. And she wasn’t going to let insane Medusa lady distract her.

Eloi Torres’s POV

”Y-You... you don't need to apologise... or qualify your statement or whatever else you're trying to do."

“Oh, I… thank you. Sorry. I just…” He scratched the back of his head, attempting to find the words.

"It's honestly... fine. There's no real need to worry, y'know?"

“Yeah. I– I guess you’re right! I just… really don’t want to mess this up, you know? There are a lot of people counting on us… and, um, okay. That sounded dumb. And overdramatic. And like some sort of- ch-cheesy reference to a superhero show or something. With great power comes– something. Uh, never mind, I don’t know what I’m saying. H-Have we been introduced? I’m Eloi Torres. A d-detective here. Somehown By some, by some… um… miracle. Yeah. And… You are?”

Suzume Fujimori’s POV

Suzume groaned. Oh, no. Someone else here with the same job did not take it nearly as seriously.

She got up from her chair at the sound of somebody spinning their own around, and rubbed her eyes. She really had overslept. One hour of sleep was plenty, especially since all the rest needed to be dedicated to RESEARCH.

“Our job here is to analyze physical evidence of crime scenes in order to get a clearer picture of the crimes that took place. You don’t even know what your obligations at this workplace are? I do hope you’re joking.”

Maybe it was a joke. Suzume did not consider herself attuned to what one might refer to as “social norms”.

“But I guess if you want to get yourself fired, that’s… your business, I suppose.” She shrugged and handed Cecilia Horton some material to analyze. “Good luck with that.”

She proceeded to go back to her own work, feeling no need to explain further to somebody who SHOULD be feasibly qualified to do the work of a Forensic Analyst.

But it was perfectly fine with her if she had to do it alone. After all, she was in it for the science.

Laurence Walton’s POV

Laurence Walton raised his eyebrows in puzzlement as he felt the other intern hide behind him. Aaaand a very annoying crackling laugh.

"An intern? What is this, Kindergarten? You trying to hide behind mommy's skirt? Scared of big bad Andreja?"

Laurence narrowed his eyes into slits. So she was one of those particularly irritating people who were just obnoxious and undignified for no reason. She didn’t even belong in this institution.

"Is that your name? An...Andreja?"

“Does it matter what her name is?” he asked the glasses kid in an annoyed mutter. “We should just get out of here.”

He surprised himself when he said ‘we’. It wasn’t like the kid had even mattered. Then again, this ‘Andreja’ was clearly a loon.

Then, all of a sudden, some unknown figure busted in like it was their business.

"I know you're 11 years and a few positions my inferior, but this seems below you, Buivis."

Well. Thankfully, someone else had more than one brain cell.

"Oh, Head Detective Jemu! I wasn't aware that you were interested in the lower class. Was it getting boring up there at the top? I bet it was. Not very many people for you to yell at over there. I can't imagine how sad it must've been for you."

…Jesus. Everything about this woman was designed to be irritating.

"So what brings you over here? You want to toy with some baby interns? Hell, I won't stop you. Go right ahead."

BABY interns?

So, what was her deal, exactly? Intimidating people with her complete and utter stupidity so that they would be so afraid of winding up that UTTERLY devoid of reasoning that they would somehow have better job performances?

"You're... a head detective? It's nice to meet you...sir..."

Laurence cleared his throat. “Yes. It is an honor to meet you.” He wasn't about to waste his breath on the crazy abomination that was Andreja. “What brings you here?”

"Well, I like to be involved with the place. Besides, interns are here to learn. Who better to teach than the ones leading?" That was honestly a good point.

"Nice to meet you. As stated, i'm Head Detective Buraddo Jemu. Be as formal or informal as you want with titles and yada-yada. Do you have any questions about the place or operations? I know orientation should tell you most of it but I'm not really a fan of how... indirect things tend to be."

He’d have to keep that in mind.

He figured it might be a good idea to tag along, but he’d figure things out well enough on his own. It didn’t really matter in the end.

But… oh, great. She was laughing. Louder and louder.

Did she exist solely to attempt to get a rise out of others? My, what a touching sentiment.

“Pardon me, mighty Andreja. Don't you have better things to do than laughing at a high school student for no logical reason? I don't see how that gets work done around here. And on that note, I should probably be going myself.”

Cali Mabey’s POV

Okay, maybe that wasn’t a good idea. He really should just get to his paperwork…

Cali headed off to look through some of the case files information. He… didn’t really trust his reasoning when it came to this stuff, but, oh well! It didn’t hurt to try, right?

Hmm… there were supposed to be interns at this place. Cali flipped through the pages. Yes, they might benefit from some help from some of the fellow detectives. They flipped another page.

But they had to attend to the work, too… maybe on his break he’d try and help some of the interns out, if it was alright, of course…

It got so lonely and stuffy up in the office sometimes!! Break time was always the best time. Because break time meant talking to people!! Socializing!! Woo!! Yeah, maybe Cali wasn’t cut out for this lonely sort of work, but…

He was helping people by doing it, right? That was what mattered!

Sawyer Laurens’s POV

Sawyer zipped into a wall at the speed of light while screaming something about being on a quest to find the ultimate pudding. This is not a reference, I swear. They are totally fine.

❄️lucian arbred's pov🕊️

"...Lucian, I-"

Was... Akari going to say something? Did it... Matter what? Someone new was dead. And Lucian didn't even want to go over and see, but...

He just gave Akari a sad smile, and slowly headed in the direction of...

...oh. Akora. Lucian's heart sunk. He had barely known her, and yet... He had, a little bit. He'd respected her. She was skilled, she was gentle, caring, helpful. Not that... Anyone would have deserved this...

And then Sawyer was... Over there with that... Look on their face. That utter... Puzzlement...

📚SAWYER LAURENS'S POV

.
..
...?!

"The hell is going on with you, huh?! The hell is this?! What the-"

Sawyer stared in wide-eyed bewilderment at their assailant. "A-Akari? Wh... Wh..."

I don't... I don't understand... Is he... Angry?

...

What was he asking? What was he asking about? Whoever... Or whatever... That was on the floor?

"What the f**k happened here...?"

(Uh oh no one is covering the cinnamon roll's ears)

"I don't... I don't know... Sleeping? Is it... Sleeping?"

Sawyer wracked their brain. The words weren't coming to them. The thoughts weren't coming to them. Something was... Something was...

...

A blurry, convoluted memory.

They were... Half-asleep, probably...

..

...

"She... Is she a veterinarian, Akari?" they asked quietly.

I don't... I don't understand... What's... Going on? How do I know that?

❄️lucian arbred's pov🕊️

"A-Akari! hey! What are--"

Was... He hearing that wrong? Lucian stopped. He could have sworn he thought he saw, he thought he heard...

Sleeping. Sawyer thought that Akora was sleeping. And for some reason, they thought they recalled her being a vet.

...

Lucian grimaced. He... He had to tell Sawyer, she wasn't sleeping. But did they even remember what dying was?

What was that like? To forget every death that ever happened? To forget everything you might have ever done?

"Puhuhu~ how delightfully despairful! Mere hours before the prom, the first body is discovered! What a tragedy! How terrible for you all!"

Lucian looked down at the floor. He couldn't even find any words for that. He knew that stupid bear didn't think it was a tragedy. And he actually called himself a Headmaster. A Headmaster was supposed to protect the students, ensure their safety. And all he did... Was drive them to kill each other.

I just wanted... I just wanted to help everyone. But I couldn't save Akora. Who else am I going to fail to save? What's the point anymore? What's the point?

"Well done! The killer has truly outdone themself. This murder is practically unsolveable! Clean cut, a nice alibi, and a thousand people to frame! I applaud them, truly! What an excellent performance on their part."

Lucian blinked. "...but... surely there should be..." He wanted to vomit. He just wanted to vomit. Why? WHY? "...some evidence, right? Sh-shouldn't we... Find Kubo, and-- everyone else, and... conduct an investigation?"

Not that he wanted to.

This was just...

So... So cruel.

Lucian didn't want to go to prom anymore. He just wanted to stop anyone else from meeting the same fate Akora did. And Mei! And Futatabi, and Horatia, and Kaoru, and the time before that and the time before that and the time before that and the time before that-

Death follows you everywhere. Death follows you everywhere. Death follows you everywhere. Death follows you everywhere. Death follows you everywhere. Death follows you everywhere. Death follows you everywhere. Death follows you-

📚SAWYER LAURENS'S POV🍭

Murder?... Like a... Mystery? In a... Game?

Flashing lights. Loud noise. Shouting. Shuffling.

Electricity. It won't stop, it won't stop.

Wake up. Wake up!!

Why is it everywhere I don't understand--

"Murder?" Sawyer mumbled. Akora was... Murdered...? Is that... Akora...?

...

A doll. A mannequin. A replica. That was all it was.

.

..

...

Just part of the dream.

"Oh! Okay. Where do we find the evidence? Let's start looking for clues!" they exclaimed.

Lucian... Lucian, yes. Friend...? The friend(?) looked sad. Why was the friend sad?

I don't understand.

Hand pressed against the cover of a warm, bound book.

I don't understand.

So many nonsensical words.

Can I go home now?

He'll be fine! Probably. :)

❄️lucian arbred's pov🕊️

A horrific, dreadful nausea twisted at Lucian, giving him a truly gruesome feeling. One of pure and utter dread. Guilt. And throbbing agony.

A body had been discovered. In the cafeteria. Lucian felt a tightening in his throat and gasped for air, only to find it there only because he desperately fought back tears, choking back sobs. He felt like he was going to VOMIT. He wasn't hungry, not anymore.

He hadn't been that hungry in the first place. But someone else was dead. And that guilt, that guilt that... Maybe he could have done something more. Something better. He tearfully turned to Akari and tried not to burst into hyperventilating.

He could only say one thing.

"...oh...," he rasped. "I guess... It's... happened again...I failed... Again. Someone... Else is dead... Why... Why... why...?"

Why couldn't it have been him instead?? He didn't even want to dare step into the cafeteria. But... They'd... Have to... Right?

"...guess... We should... Go."

Lucian just felt limp right now. Were people just going to keep dying? How many more lives was this twisted game going to claim?

🦋Darcy Harper's POV💌

...oh. He had to report to the cafeteria. Someone... New was dead. So much for believing in escaping together, woo!! Another class trial! Clap clap. Another...

...trial...

For murder...

Where somebody...

Would be guilty

Of something.

God. Why couldn't this all just stop? Who the hell was doing all this?

Darcy looked around for stairs, an elevator, anything... Where was the way back up to the upper floor?

Did he even want to be back up there? To see another dead body?

📚SAWYER LAURENS'S POV🍭

A dead body?...

...

The audio sounded...

Strangely familiar.

Huh. Teddy bear. Funny little teddy bear. Fuzzy bunny goof.

Heh.

...

Sawyer found themself walking. They didn't really know where they were going, but...

Then there was something. Or someone. Sprawled out on the floor.

And they were... Confused.

They seemed to be lying on the floor dor a while... Must be...

.
..
...

Asleep?

They tilted their head and stared in confusion.

...

Something...

Was faintly familiar.

❄️lucian arbred's pov🕊️

Lucian sighed softly to himself and slightly shook his head. He'd have to figure out a way to help with what... Ever it was Sawyer had going on. It was so strange. It seemed like there was something off with their memory, but... It seemed to be causing them to act off. Very, VERY off. What could have possibly happened to the Ultimate Loremaster to make them act that way? Maybe... It was normal for them?

He had just finished making the pasta, while contemplating this dilemma, when...

"Ding dong ding~ puhuhuhu! It's time for lunch time, kiddos! Gotta keep in tip top shape if you want to escape~ and enjoy your MURDEROUSLY delightful prom tonight! Better hurry up~ I think you'll find something very interesting there..."

Well... He was already in the cafeteria's general area, but just hearing the bear's voice again made Lucian wince on the inside. But something sent chills down his spine. Escape?... Was Monokuma suggesting the idea of escape again?

The last time it had been a trap. Obviously, it was a trap, he would never actually offer them the opportunity to. But the idea of escape made Lucian... Have a mixed pang in his chest. It was one of hope, but also of worry. Would it really be possible?

...murderously delightful. Oh, yikes. No doubt, the bear was probably drumming up some twisted motives again. The thought of this hurt Lucian as he... Remembered Kaoru, and the tragedy with Setsuna and Mei over Futatabi's death. And Horatia, of course, too... Though he wasn't quite sure how he should feel about the suspicious and unstable individual. Even after she was dead and gone now...

Something very interesting... What could the bear be talking about? Was it... Something useful?

Probably not for escape.

Lucian turned to Akari. "...sounds like prom might be a... Bit of a bust." It didn't sound like a good idea to go when the bear specifically mentioned it being murderous in nature... But, still, they wouldn't go along with it, right? Nobody would actually... Kill after what happened last time... Would they? Who would even want to?

The thought of someone else dying made Lucian wince. He almost wished it could be him instead, that he could just take his own life in the place of someone else's, and that would be that, but... That wouldn't do anyone any good... right?

The idea of prom dwelled on Lucian's mind again. No, there was still no question of him asking someone. Kubo probably had every intention to go with anybody but him, or not go at all.

Because seriously.

In all honesty.

There was NO way that he felt the same way.

And... That was okay. Of course that was okay.

Because how Lucian felt... Didn't matter. It never did, and that was okay.

Lucian carefully served pasta onto a plate and handed it to Akari, and then proceeded to fetch a plate for Sawyer and bring it over.

It was what everyone else wanted that mattered.

📚SAWYER LAURENS'S POV🍭

...?

. . .

Teddy bear. Teddy bear. Why was the teddy bear there?

Something about... Prom. Fun place.

Event thingy...?

...

.
..

...

I--

Murder.

Murder?

.
..

..

...?

What did that... Word mean?

A name came from Sawyer's lips.

"Erica...?"

It was... A familiar one. Though they couldn't remember why.

...

Murder...

What was murder?

Why did it sound familiar??

"hey... Sawyer. I got you some pasta."

Oh... That voice.

..

...

Lucian?

Pasta.

Sawyer stared at the plate in front of them mindlessly. What were...

They supposed to...

Do with this?

...

.

..

...

🦋Darcy Harper's POV💌

...oh, great. Just great. Darcy would definitely need to find his way back up now. Except... Where could he go? Were there any stairs or anything?

Although... He wasn't so sure he wanted to go to prom anymore. But... He needed to. Right?

What did Monokuma mean? About... There being something useful there?

Or... He could just die down here.

...

Not that it'd make a difference anyway.

They were probably all going to-

Ah, jeez, no. He couldn't think like that. Not keeping on hoping to escape, not keeping on trying would be exactly what WOULD doom them all. There had to be a way out.

He just... Had to find it.

Somehow.

If he even wanted to...

Cadence Laurier's POV

Cadence raised an eyebrow, and did her best to force herself not to beat Mawer into the floor, deciding to instead cross her arms to restrain her hands. "Oh, Mawer. I was just on my way to do my duties. And then I came across Junior here calling his superior 'too serious'."

Which was hardly a problem. The idea almost made her roll her eyes again. The other detective clearly had a stick up her-- whatever, as usual. "If my presence is not required any longer, then I will be off."

Laurence Walton's POV

Oh, wow. She was making him regret it. How expected.

"Aww, what do you know. Yes I'm aware of how glasses work. Who even are you? Another smart guy? Some big shot detective, getting too big for his britches?"

He visibly stiffened, puffing his chest out like some sort of large bird. "I'm just saying, a little ridiculous to condescend someone based off something like that, don't you think? My name is Laurence Walton, one of the interns training at this fine institute. And who might you be?"

He half-snorted at her snarky comment. Big shot detective, pssh. Oh, he definitely knew what he was doing though. He'd show her he belonged here.

Eloi Torres's POV

"Okay? Yeah, I didn't fall or anything. Thanks though. I can be kinda clumsy sometimes."

Eloi perked up at that. "Yeah, I... get what you mean. Some of the people here are so stiff a-and- sophisticated!! Well, I mean- I don't mean that as anything against them! But... they just... totally know what they're doing. And it's like- wow! Um, sorry. Got off-topic, um... yeah. You're... welcome."

Congratulations, Eloi. You're fudging things up as usual. Hmm, fudge. A brick of thst would be nice right now. How did they make fudge again? Wait, did he ever know how to?

Poor guy seemed like a wreck as well, the way he adjusted himself and laughed like that... was he okay?

"Are you okay? You seem kinda nervous... not that I can really say anything... I'm kinda scared myself. It's just my first year as a detective. You know how it is..."

As the other slightly met his eyes, Eloi felt a little antsy about it, and he too started to avoid eye contact. He could barely make out what he was saying, but...

"Well, um... s-sorry. I'm kinda--" He pawed and pinched at and fiddled with the fabric of his clothes nervously. "I'm kinda... always nervous... you know? E-Everything's so... nerve-wracking." He let out a deep exhale. "How does everyone else do it? I really don't get it... I'm- umm... I'm... I'm alright. I-I think."

Sawyer Laurens's POV

A fluffy eager bundle of joy had entered the building. Sawyer didn't get why all the boring work stuff sounded so bad, who wouldn't want to be like androids?! Androids were COOL!! They couldn't wait to solve even more cases!! Who knew what fascinating details would be available?

They skulked about, noticing there were multiple conversations they weren't currently a part of. They wondered if they should eavesdrop or join in. Still, hmmmmmmmmmmm, eavesdropping wasn't considered socially acceptable... hmmmmmm. Hmhmhm. What a fun noise hm was. Sawyer would seriously have to try learning the ocarina.

While they puzzled over the dilemma of obtaining various instruments, they realized they should probably get to work in order to please the robotic overlords. But there were SO MANY INTERESTING CONVERSATIONS GOING ON!! And that left them in a state of massive indecision.

Cali Mabey's POV

What in the...? Had he just heard his name coming from someone's ringtone? Cali spotted a few people... two of them looked more youthful, probably interns... speaking amongst themselves, about something. Oh dear. He should probably just get to his work.

He didn't want to interrupt, or to eavesdrop... but they looked possibly troubled. And he couldn't not help someone in need!! He decided to listen in and see what he could gauge about the conversation.

Suzume Fujimori's POV

The young woman was already hard at work, analyzing evidence of previous cases. How deeply fascinating. Hair, dust, dirt, footprints, fingerprints, chemicals... oh, all the different marks that could be left on a crime scene. So truly, so deeply fascinating. She took pride in this work that she did so thoroughly.

If only she was the only one working on this. Sadly, there were other Forensic Analysts. Suzume would be perfectly content working on it completely alone... still, it couldn't hurt to receive their feedback at the same time. She supposed.

But this... this was enough for her. It was all so interesting on its own. Who needed people, to make your life complete?

Cadence Laurier's POV

Cadence Laurier was not alarmed at the idea of the ways of the agency. She was used to them by now, and this was the sort of work she EXCELLED in. That very morning she had woken up at 4AM exactly, the time she always woke up at. In that time she had attended to every necessary matter in terms of her appearance, and extensively looked through and filled out various paperwork. And now she found herself once again within these same hallowed halls that she had grown so used to.

She eyed the little Junior Detective Niwa as he scurried off and rolled her eyes. Those young detectives. Always think they're above their pay grade. Someone should really teach him his place.

All the same… oh, what the hell was she thinking? Michon was right, he was a waste of time. Maybe he'd make something of himself someday, but in the meantime, he was nothing but a stray dog. A mongrel.

"Always those children, huh?" she tsked.

Oh. Now there was someone else acting out.

"Is there anything wrong with a Head Detective being… serious?" She clicked her tongue. "Michon is just doing his job. Can you say the same?"

Eloi Torres's POV

Eloi fidgeted nervously and adjusted his clothing. He was a wreck, as usual. Just make it through today, just make it through today… everything will be okay.

They said some kind of saying about stuff getting easier with time, but the poor lad really wasn't feeling that. People made him nervous. Work made him nervous. Life made him nervous. Everything made him nervous.

Especially that speech that was given. Well… he'd get through this. Hopefully. Despite being clumsy, stupid, awkward, and hopelessly unskilled. The big question was how his roleplayer hadn't chosen him to be a janitor, although he'd probably mess that up too.

He saw that one of his fellow detectives had been given a hard time by their superiors. He… couldn't help but feel bad. Was he okay? Eloi didn't know if it was a good idea or not, but… he felt the need to approach Niwa.

Awkwardly, he sidled up to him. "H-Hi. Niwa, right? Are… are… you okay? I just, um, thought I should ask, I'm… sorry that happened…" He trailed off. Wait. Had he been supposed to overhear that or?! "I- I mean, I thought I heard, well-" God. Talking was hard.

"Sorry. Never mind. Ummm… y-you okay?"

Laurence Walton's POV

Hm. Most curious. Work, work, and more work. Was that supposed to intimidate him? Laurence was a serious person. He had always been serious. And he would remain serious until his eventual death.
The other interns looked shaken. What, had they been planning on dilly-dallying? Did they think this was some sort of party? A vacation, perhaps? Was he the only one taking this seriously?

He noticed that someone else who was presumably another intern was seemingly getting harassed, or at the very least, somewhat bothered by somebody. He raised his eyebrows. Should I maybe do something about that? It wasn't like he had any reason to care.

But they were mocking… his glasses. Glasses. Of all things.

"Pardon me. You do know he wouldn't be capable of seeing without those, don't you? Bold of you to condescend him."

It wasn't like he cared. But it was literally so irrational he had to comment on it.

Name: Cadence Laurier

Gender: Female (She/Her, They/Them)

Age: 29 Years Old

Birthday: January 1st

Role at the Agency: Head Detective #3, if not possible, Detective is just fine!

Personality: Cadence is a very smug and arrogant individual with extreme overconfidence in herself and her abilities. She believes she can tackle about any problem that comes into her awareness, and believes she is absolutely capable of solving any and all cases that pop up. She is very sadistic and results-oriented, a very "the end DOES justify the means" sort of individual. She will do whatever it takes to achieve goals, absolutely relentless, never yielding to consider how someone might feel about what she does for even a moment. Although she is exceptionally talented and takes pride in it, and hates to ever admit she is wrong about anything, choosing to cover it up whenever she can, on the inside, she will immediately start to doubt her abilities. She does actually feel guilt and turmoil on the inside for never taking the feelings of others into account in her decision-making, but she keeps that inside, as that isn't important. Cadence is pragmatic, efficient, and logical, very factual, and tends to only follow tangents that she believes lead to a potential answer. She struggles greatly in interpersonal relationships, due to never letting anyone see her emotionally vulnerable, and preferring to ignore her feelings altogether. Cadence also gains all of her self-worth from what she does, and thus, if she were to find herself failing more than once, that could be utterly devastating. But wait, back on her being something of a sadist. She has a deeply held sense of justice and enjoys to see criminals put away for their crimes, she actually LIKES it when someone is begging and pleading that they're innocent with her. In other words, yeah, she's almost completely awful. She's a jerk.

Personality Type: ENTJ (Te-Ni-Se-Fi) 3w2 so/sx 385 LIE SLOEI VLFE (1V-1, 2L-1, 3F-1, 4E-1 yep, all the confident subtypes, pfft) Choleric-Sanguine

Description:
[]Height: 5'5", but she feels a lot taller in energy.
[]Weight: 124 lbs
[]Skin Tone: Pale. Incredibly pale.
[]Hair Style: I- I have no words, how do I describe that-
[]Hair Colour: Blonde-
[]Eye Colour: Pale emerald green, she has cat-like eyes.
[]Clothes: Tends to dress like somebody right out of the Victorian era, or otherwise formally. Almost always wears colors of black, red, and gray.
[]Accessories: Black gloves (so as not to disturb crime scenes), she alternates between various earrings, bows, and flowers.
[]Other: I was going to try not giving her the red glasses but it looked wrong for her not to have them.

History: Despite the world being almost entirely run by mechanical entities, Cadence's parents always had high expectations of her. She was made to spend practically every day of her life working on something. Working, working, researching, researching. She was given no choice in the matter, and was told that she had to make something of herself. That she had to be great, not just great, but the greatest. They were always constantly testing her, she was expected to always bring back top-notch results, or not to come back home at all. And so Cadence took to perfecting herself, with a deeply felt fear within her heart that never emerged. She was taught to never be vulnerable, to never find herself loved and appreciated if she didn't perfect herself to everyone's standards. With her parents' growing praise at her always managing to push herself to the limit, and past it, she developed into something of a very prideful person. Other people she met in passing also always tended to have high praise for her and her accomplishments. Given her strong sense of justice, it would only make sense for her to find her way into the Clockwork Detective Agency, where she would climb her way up the ranks. Life at the top is lonely, but Cadence doesn't mind. ...right?

Sexuality: I don't actually know what suits her, maybe depends on what happens in the roleplay-

Voice Claim: Sorta like Nina from Crush Crush but with a different accent.

Name: Eloi Torres

Gender: Male (He/Him)

Age: 22 years old

Birthday: March 31st

Role at the Agency: Detective

Personality: A very sweet, shy, and caring person who doubts himself a lot and does not think much of himself. He is very deeply insecure and does not trust his own abilities very much. In his speech, he will stammer and doubt himself a lot. Eloi wants to understand himself but isn't quite sure how to, and he prefers to try to help and accommodate others. He is a very warm and peaceful person, who will go out of his way to make others comfortable, rarely showing concern for himself and his own needs. He is great at empathizing with other people, at putting himself in their place and forming connections based off of this. But he is very doubtful in himself in all his skills, and he sees himself as inferior to everyone else. Despite showing extreme, doormat-level patience when it comes to other people, he never extends the same to himself. He will often bring up certain points that occur to him, but immediately dismiss his reasoning as wrong, because he couldn't possibly ever be right about anything. He doesn't even understand how he came to be a detective, thinking that he never deserved to be enrolled. But he is a lot smarter than he gives himself credit for. He tends to overidealize people a lot of the time, seeing only the best parts of them and not the worse ones. He also commonly disconnects from reality by accident. Eloi has a very, very deep fear of abandonment, and greatly values his relationships, so much so to the point he'll do anything not to have people leave him.

Personality Type: INFP (Fi-Ne-Si-Te) 9w1 sx/so 964 SEI RLUAI FELV (1F-0, 2E-4, 3L-2, 4V-4) Melancholic-Sanguine

Description:
[]Height: 5'0", and he's very insecure about it
[]Weight: 95 lbs
[]Skin Tone: Almond
[]Hair Style: Goes about halfway down his neck in the back, it's very poorly cut by him with scissors at home. He typically gets his long bangs in his face a lot, because he's very shy and hates making eye contact, and feels like people are always staring at him no matter what. He's also very insecure about his face and wants to cover it up as much as possible, but he thought wearing a mask or scarf or something might not be professional. Poor Eloi.
[]Hair Colour: Caramel
[]Eye Colour: Light Blue
[]Clothes: Typically wears many, many layers of clothing. He loves button-up shirts and sweaters especially. Tends to wear slightly loose and baggy pants, but not too loose, because he doesn't want to look ridiculous.
[]Accessories: He likes wearing hats.
[]Other: Almost always flustered and sweating nervously.

History: Eloi Torres had very neglectful parents who did not care much for him growing up. Whenever he had problems, they never had time for him, and he was always very lonely. He was a very shy person even when he was little, and his family made no effort to help him socialize. Eloi was always very lonely. Very, very lonely, to the point that the very idea of being alone shatters him to his core. His parents never had any kind words for him, it was always some kind of frustration at him not being able to do anything right. He often felt like his needs didn't matter at all. Eloi only wound up becoming a detective because one of the few friends he made suggested it, and he didn't want to say no. The poor lad. Hopefully, he actually develops some confidence.

Sexuality: Bisexual!

Age: 17 Years Old

Birthday: November 3rd

Role at the Agency: Intern

Personality: A blunt, dry, stern person. He is very logical and precise, and thinks before he speaks. He is very grounded in reality, and considers “flights of fancy” to be ridiculous. He is very cordial in manner, but also at the same time very inconsiderate and condescending. Laurence is very skeptical of other people, thinking that everyone is a suspect until absolutely proven otherwise. He has an exceptional ability for remembering extensive details, and for noticing things other people wouldn’t quite notice. He struggles a bit with his feelings and doesn’t like to think about them much, preferring to think of things logically, but at the same time, he wants to understand them. He feels annoyed and overwhelmed when he is around people who are too emotional.

Personality Type: ISTJ (Si-Te-Fi-Ne) 5w6 sp/so 514 LII RLOEI LVEF Melancholic [Dominant] IT(S)

Description:
[]Height: 5’10”

[]Hair Style: Strangely semi-long, though not reaching his shoulders. Is very well-groomed and the bangs are always parted in a way that looks sophisticated.
[]Hair Colour: Deep Blue
[]Eye Colour: Light Purple

[]Accessories: Wears top hats, fedoras, or nothing. The last thing he wants is to look ridiculous.
[]Other: Nothing comes to mind!

History: Laurence was raised to be a very formal and independent person whose family was almost always working on something or other. He felt like he couldn’t really depend on anyone but himself for things. Which was fine, mostly. He grew up very lonely, mostly isolating himself from human interactions and finding his comfort in knowledge and various research. He wound up being selected to be an intern at Clockwork Detective Agency in his time as a student, and seems to already act like he knows what he’s doing. This kid acts way older than his age, to the point that it shocks some people to learn that he is merely a teenager.

Name: Cali Mabey

Gender: Male (He/Him, They/Them)

Age: 21 Years Old

Birthday: June 8th

Role at the Agency: Detective

Personality: A kindhearted, loving, and caring individual, if a bit timid. He’s very sweet and will go out of his way to help anyone who needs it! He’s energetic, enthusiastic, optimistic, and childlike in energy. He has a compulsive tendency to help others too much, almost never thinking of himself. He wants the world to be a very peaceful, happy, harmonic place where everyone gets along, and does everything in his power to try to make that happen. Cali can often naively believe that people can be good to an extreme extent, to the point that he might not realize the truth behind certain cases. But he tries his best to remember the facts and what he should be doing, and how much everyone is counting on him. Cali can be quite frightened of negativity, and not like to think about gloomier and darker things. He also struggles a lot when it comes to logical reasoning, preferring to ask others for their advice. He can also be overly passive at times, letting people step all over him, while secretly being malcontent. Cali is very needy and desperately wants love and affection from others, but he tries to let good intentions win out over his need for recognition. He does think that he is worthy of so much love, but tends to suppress this tendency, trying to cool down any excessive demands he may feel the need to make. It’s more important to focus on other people and what they want, most of all.

He became unable to be happy without receiving such a thing, and he constantly believed all he was good for was being able to give to others. Name: Sawyer Laurens

Gender: Non-Binary (Goes by they/them pronouns)

Age: 22 years old

Birthday: May 4th

Role at the Agency: Detective

Personality: An insanely curious, optimistic, hyperactive, and imaginative individual who is absurdly creative. They have a huge amount of sporadic and seemingly random ideas and theories that make next-to-no sense, but make sense to them somehow. They are very excitable and greatly enjoy receiving new cases and attempting to solve things. They are a silly goofy goofster, someone extremely friendly and cheerful. They never seem to get upset by… anything, really. It’s almost kind of creepy. They’re scarily optimistic to the point that they tend to alienate others, never taking the time to seriously reflect upon their own feelings or to care about them. Sawyer considers themself to be friends with everybody they come into contact with. They are very knowledgeable in many respects, and yet ironically come across with a lot of childlike innocence. Sawyer is probably seemingly the most irrational person you’ll ever meet, but to them, it all makes sense somehow. They tend to act like they don’t care about what other people think, but that’s a lie. Truly, they quite deeply care about what other people think about them, and they want to be viewed as somebody everyone can approve of and rely on. Their silly nature where they act so carefree about everything may all just be part of the deep and twisted lie to themself, that nothing really matters, that everything will always be okay, and life is just a fun little game. Ironically, they seem to encourage others around them to be themselves, and to openly express their emotions, despite having genuine difficulty truly connecting with their own. They do find such a thing to be important, and yet it is difficult for them. Although this might not be outwardly apparent, as although they always act so confident and cheerful in how they express themself, this could not be further from the truth. Sawyer does not understand in the least who they really are, merely what they might be. They are willing to do anything for the sake of interesting ideas, unless they happen to realize that might have negative effects on everybody overall.

Personality Type: ENTP (Ne-Ti-Fe-Si) 7w8 sx/so 729 ILE SCUAI LVEF (1L-2, 2V-2, 3E-3, 4F-2) Sanguine [Dominant]

Most professional-looking detective ever whoa

[]Height: 5’3”
[]Weight: 122 lbs
[]Skin Tone: Peach
[]Hair Style: Uhh… kinda medium-medium long. Typically, it’s about shoulder-length with part of it tied into pigtails. Although it is sometimes portrayed tied up in other fashions, such as braids. All I can really describe it as is PURE AND UTTER CHAOS AND INCONSISTENCY.
[]Hair Colour: Uhh… dark brown, lighter brown, and light blue. Nobody knows what their natural color is even supposed to be. Spoiler alert: It’s probably brown. Although they have blonde eyebrows (this doesn’t get portrayed in most Picrews because my aesthetic sense is incapable of making it look good)
[]Eye Colour: Dark blue!
[]Clothes: uhhhh… they wear many variants of clothing in many different colors. There are no limits to their preferences.
[]Accessories: Pins, hairclips, necklaces, chokers, bracelets, hair ties, bands, rings, fingerless gloves.. .there… there are no limits. Also, typically beanies.
[]Other: [Buzz Lightyear meme] Freckles. Freckles everywhere.

History: Had a mostly normal childhood with two very loving parents. Their parents offered them a lot of freedom, but at the same time, they shielded Sawyer from a great many things growing up which contributed to their oblivion on various matters. Sawyer always had a very deep interest in almost EVERYTHING that there was to life, and they wound up becoming very engaged in the idea of learning all that they could in this regard. They became very obsessive over researching various topics, very deeply curious and passionate about so very many things. They became astute at obtaining and extensively analyzing and recalling vast amounts of information, excellent at theorizing and at figuring various things out in many different regards, and their parents were always very supportive of it. One of the many things that greatly intrigued Sawyer was the idea of mysteries and mystery stories, and eventually they decided that they wanted to be one of the people solving them!! Because it sounded interesting! And fun! So they wound up striving to get an education that would let them become one. Oh boy. Aaand… now they’re part of this organization. Probably sounds like a good idea. This history is not vague at all.

❄️lucian arbred's pov🕊️

Akari seemed noticeably freaked out as Sawyer entered, and muttered something Lucian couldn't quite catch. The poor guy... He hoped he was alright.

"Uh... Hey... Everything... Alright, Sawyer?"

...yep. Akari was definitely freaking out. Mission failed. We'll get 'em next time. Lucian couldn't say he wasn't freaked out too, so that made two of them. Why did Sawyer have that look on their face?...

Sawyer blinked. They stared at the knife. They kept chopping. Chopping. Then they just stared at the vegetables with that same perplexed expression... Like they'd forgotten what they were supposed to do.

They put the knife down, and proceeded to excessively adjust their glasses. It was... Odd. You'd think they'd just adjust them once, maybe they were lopsided a little, but they kept doing it. Like they weren't even sure what their glasses were supposed to be.

"...glass," they whispered, and Lucian wasn't exactly sure he'd heard that right. Sawyer was always something of a weirdo. But not a skulking, quiet weirdo... It just... It didn't seem like them. But then they turned to look at Akari and smiled.

📚SAWYER LAURENS'S POV

...alright? Oh. Yes. Initiate standard procedure.

"I'm doing fine, Akari! Just fine!" They told him eagerly. "Is the pasta going to be done soon?"

The other figure... What was his name... Lucian?? exchanged a look with Akari for some reason, and tossed the vegetables into the... pot. That was... What it was... I think. "soon... we haven't gotten all the components together yet."

Sawyer squinted. What did... That mean? Not all the components?

Like a puzzle you couldn't quite make sense of. Something was missing. Something you had to remember. But you couldn't remember, you couldn't forget. And yet... You couldn't remember...

But...

.

Sawyer stared at the shiny blade. It looked...

...

So familiar.

...

Just like that day.

What day?

❄️lucian arbred's pov🕊️

Sawyer was suddenly chopping the vegetables like mad. In mere seconds, they'd send more flying into the pot. And more. And more.

There was this... Strangely glassy look in their eyes. It was so odd. It looked like they were doing whatever they were doing completely unconsciously.

"wow! Sawyer... Um... Thank you, that's enough, now."

Chop chop chop chop.

"...Sawyer?"

Chop chop chop chop.

"Sawyer!"

Lucian didn't want to react in such an extreme way, but he immediately tried shaking them gently by the shoulders. Why weren't they responding?!

In a sudden motion, Sawyer dropped the knife to the floor. They glanced around, looking quite confused again.

"...Sawyer, are... You really alright? Y-You... Look like you zoned out there."

"The... Twilight Zone?" they asked curiously. "Another new episode?"

Lucian sighed. This was hopeless. They misinterpreted everything that was said. And... What was with that?! They were definitely not okay.

Does Darcy deal with this... All the time?

Feeling a certain sense of helplessness, Lucian decided to just go get Sawyer to sit at the table. After all, they might accidentally hurt someone with the--

He blinked. Wait. Were those bandages on their hands?? Come to think of it, there seemed to be bloodstaind underneath. It... Looked like they already hurt themself.

"um... Sawyer, why don't you go sit over there? We'll... Let you know when it's done?"

Sawyer merely stared at Lucian, and then slowly, awkwardly walked towards a chair, and then faceplanted onto the table. Well. Yeah, that certainly seemed like sitting.

...this was so strange. And not in a good way. If only he could think of something that might help...

🦋Darcy Harper's POV

"I hope there's at least SOMETHING useful down here," he muttered to himself, as he looked around. What kind of rooms did this floor even have? And just how many floors DID this school have? Were they just guaranteeing the students couldn't DIG their way out?

Name: Suzume Fujimori

Gender: Female (She/her)

Age: 21 years old

Birthday: February 28th

Role at the Agency: Forensic Analyst

Personality: A cold, rational, and aloof individual who rarely does extreme shows of emotion. She is very intelligent (not so much so socially in which case she is very oblivious) in a great many matters, methodical, and thorough in what she does. She has a great passion for science, which is her deepest felt joy in life, but with most other things, there is really nothing to get stirred up about.

Suzume is rather reserved, and does not get irritated easily. She is cool-headed most of the time, and she does not easily get attached to people, possibly due in part to her trust issues. She considers the world to be a very dangerous place, and she doesn't think particularly well of anyone within it, nor does she want to get close to them. Or… so she tells herself.

Suzume doesn't really go out of her way to accommodate others, but she doesn't really go out of her way to be cruel either. She tries to remain polite and civil in conversation, but may say the wrong thing and realize too late. Deep down, part of her does want to connect with other people, but she's not so sure she wants to let her guard down.

After all, there's plenty of fulfillment in the work she does, isn't there? Why would she ever have the need for anything more?

Suzume can come across as a little creepy at times when it comes to her experiments, as she is willing to do anything in the name of discoveries. She might speak of something particularly mortifying with little show of any sort of mortification. This is probably not out of cruelty, she is just incredibly curious, and unbothered by seeing the darker side of the world.

She can be incredibly assertive at times and quite relentless at pursuing what she wants. She tends to trust her own reasoning, and rarely likes to admit that she is wrong. She can be a little arrogant in this regard, liking to think of herself as incredibly intelligent and competent.

Suzume struggles greatly when it comes to matters regarding emotional sensitivity, and is often puzzled at what the right thing is to do in such situations. She dislikes dealing with her feelings, and tends to push them away if she can whenever necessary.

[]Eye Colour: Amber, I guess, considering it's either yellow or orange in how I portray it and I always forget which one it is
[]Clothes: Tends to wear button-up shirts and stiff-looking formal wear. Is never seen without a lab coat. Is often seen with peculiar fluid stains on said lab coats given that she might be doing an experiment of some sort and not notice the spillage.
[]Accessories: Just a hairclip.
[]Other: Has a face, shoulders, and torso spotted with freckles and moles. Also, is almost never seen without bags under her eyes, as she often gets so wrapped up in her research she forgets to eat or sleep.

History: Well… probably similar to that of the Dangan Roleplay. She lived a semi-decent life with her biological parents until they both died in a car crash. After she was orphaned, she was adopted and raised by her two dads. Suzume developed a massive interest in how the world around her worked in its many manifestations, and sought to understand it. She became obsessed with researching all the various types of science that existed, she had to know everything about how everything in the universe around her worked and why. She often found herself ridiculed by others for her "nerdy" interests, and never really found real friends to call her own. She developed severe trust issues as a result of this, and took to living her life mostly desolate and alone. Despite this world she lived in having no need for a human to work so hard, science was still always her deeply felt passion, possibly her only one. Upon hearing that the Clockwork Detective Agency would work to solve numerous crimes with various staff members, and that they were in need of a Forensic Analyst, Suzume found herself perfectly qualified for the job, and of course signed up for it. Let's see what she's in for…

🦋Darcy Harper’s POV💌

Darcy, in his dramatic fall, thought he heard something that sounded like Miyako screaming out in irritation. She probably wanted his head now. Compared to barely even noticing his existence, this was actually a big step forward! Although, right now, he had bigger concerns.

Darcy attempted to remember something he thought he once heard once, regarding safety when it comes to falling from a high place, and somehow managed to bend his knees and feet into position, just as the sickening sensation hit.

With a sickening crunch, he fell to the floor, rubbing his head despite that fortunately not having gotten injured. He was pretty sure he’d at least twisted his ankle, badly, if not having broken at least one of his limbs. They winced, and attempted to assess their surroundings.

…for some reason, he found himself thinking of something stupid in that moment. How in the world would he get to prom in time now? That was the least of his concern, and he scolded himself for thinking of something so stupid. It was probably a trap orchestrated by the bear anyway.

It was probably far more worrying that he was in this unfamiliar place down here, completely alone, and what’s worse, injured. He attempted to stand up, finding that his legs were somehow even shakier than usual, and one of them refused to do any more than limping. Oh, great.

Well, at the very least, maybe he’d find something useful down here. What was even going to be going on in this floor? He set to exploring the various nooks and crannies, trying his best to ignore the pain in his limbs. God, that hurt.

📚SAWYER LAURENS’S POV🍭

...Sawyer awoke, their eyes slowly fluttering open. Why were they asleep on the… what was this called again? They tilted their head. There was a human face in front of them.

When they tilted their head to the side, the human face did so also. Sawyer tapped the air, but the air felt solid. The figure did the same. They felt deeply puzzled, and confused. Why was this person(?) copying them?

Sawyer found themself adjusting… the object on their face… what was it? It felt strangely familiar in their fingers. They thought they recognized the weight. It was all so confusing. Why had they been here?...

The figure’s hair in the mirror was strangely ruffled. The eyes were blinking tiredly, and the mouth opened and closed. Sawyer was deeply perplexed, to say the least.

Bandages. And… this strange redness… what was it? Why did they have sauce on their hands? Had they been cooking? …cooking?

They strained to remember.

.
..

Getting ready, right? Ready for… what?

.
..

Thinking was difficult. Everything was so… confusing.

.
..

Bandages. How had they known those were bandages?

.
..

Getting ready…

.
..

For… prom? Was that what it was called? Something very fun. Right? And… who were they going with, again?

.
..

Darcy. Where was Darcy? Why weren’t they here?

.
..

They should… go look… right? Yes. Search. Begin the operation!
.
..

Operation… doctors…

.
..

Never mind. Best not to think about that. Sawyer stumbled out of… wherever they were… they were… getting ready there, right?... what was that place called… why was there that strange human in there… that copied them?...

“Helloooo?” The word came out unexpectedly, as they roamed the halls. Who had said that? Why was… nothing… lining up? Did I say that? Could I… have…

.
..

Two… people? In the kitchen. They thought they… recognized one of them… the other… looked faintly familiar. There was… a smell… Sawyer thought they recognized that smell…

“Mom?” they half-whispered. “Mom, is that you?”

❄lucian arbred’s pov🕊

Lucian almost jumped. He heard an unexpected voice inside the kitchen. The person had walked so softly, and so quietly, it was so strange… given that the person was…

Sawyer. He hadn’t seen them in a little while. And what they were saying… seemed even stranger. They’d lost their memory recently, right? Lucian tried to keep cooking, but…

”Mom? Mom, is that you?” What? What were they… something about the situation must have reminded Sawyer of something. Something regarding their childhood, maybe. Maybe… it was the fact Lucian was cooking something. Maybe their mother had done the same, that would seem about right.

”hello, Sawyer… you doing alright? It’s me, Lucian… do you remember?” He spoke especially softly and gently to the Ultimate Loremaster. They seemed so… confused.

“Lucian?” they asked. Lucian was relieved to hear they weren’t speaking so quietly anymore. It had seemed unlike them. But there was this deeply perplexed expression on their face. “I… don’t know. Alright?...”

…did… they not remember what that was anymore? Okay. Stay calm, Lucian, just take this one step at a time. They’ll be okay.

If only that wasn’t a lie.

”I was just… making some pasta. For Akari. You… remember them. Right?”

Lucian watched as Sawyer turned to Akari. Something flickered in their eyes, some faint recognition.

“Oh, right! I met you… a little earlier, right? How… long ago? Akari!” They smiled as they said the words. “Great to see you, friend! Did you say… pasta?”

They were… certainly very confused. At least they remembered “meeting Akari for the first time” a little earlier. But it had certainly happened a lot sooner than that. Lucian decided not to push the issue. Although, he was… a little worried Sawyer didn’t remember them. They hadn’t spoken as much since… what happened to Kaoru, but… still…

They also seemed to… show some faint recognition regarding pasta. They had wondered if their mother was in the kitchen. Sawyer certainly must have at least forgotten… the situation… if they were wondering if their mom was in here.

Poor Sawyer… I hope that their mom is okay right now. Who even knows what’s going on in the outside world right now? Surely… someone would have realized something was wrong… after receiving no word from us for days, he thought. Not… my family, but surely… at least some of the people here. Unless… could the mastermind have been forging letters from all of us saying everything is alright? Is that too much of a stretch to imagine? They went to a lot of trouble to orchestrate this.

”...would you care to join us?” he asked. It… couldn’t hurt to ask, right?

Sawyer stared at the cooking food in front of them. They stared, and stared, in an eerie silence. "Okay!~" they chirped, and then took to trying to cut vegetables with the handle of the knife.

"...it... um... goes the other way." Lucian gently tried to adjust it.

"Ohhhh. Gotcha."

There was this strange look in Sawyer's eyes as they did it. As though there was... something... threatening to emerge. Something vaguely familiar.

He just hoped Akari wasn't too disturbed at having witnessed this as he tried to just get back to cooking. What was with... that look in Sawyer's eyes?

❄️lucian arbred's pov🕊️

Lucian wanted to believe in Akari. He wanted to believe in everyone here. He just… he had to hold onto that. He had to hold onto the idea that… there was hope for everyone.

There was a way out of here. They just hadn't found it yet. The… people that died wouldn't die in vain. Right?

just how naïve am I? Stupid Lucian, stupid. You know that's not how it works.

"S-sorry, I just... Y'know-..."

No… Akari, I know… I know. I know it's stupid. I know it's foolish. But I can't just give up on everyone here, I-

"...it's alright. really."

"Lucian it's..." Lucian saw Akari's hand heading to rest behind his neck, and he had a brief worry that the Ultimate Engineer might be injured there. But he didn't want to be intrusive, and…

"Not that I don't think I can, it's just..."

He… did believe in himself. That was… That was good, but, Lucian still had a feeling about what was coming next. And he wasn't wrong.

"I don't want to."

"...Akari, I…"

Oh… he… didn't want to. Lucian couldn't say he blamed him. Who wanted to try to escape from this place?

Lucian was just chasing a vague hope of the future. A future that could be better. A time and place where everyone could heal, and be friends… and things would be okay. maybe he was thinking of the roleplayers' fanfics.

"...I'm sorry. I… can't say I blame you. I'll be here if you need me, okay?"

Even if I probably can't hope more to help than just a little.

"...Yeah. Maybe..."

The look in his eyes just… crushed him. Lucian knew that look all too well. He just… tried to offer Akari another smile, but it was hard.

"Pasta is fine, I guess."

Lucian nodded affirmatively. "...okay."

He then pulled out the sticks-that-somehow-soften-and-turn-into-noodles, as well as sauce, cheese, and various assortments of vegetables, as well as numerous cooking utensils such as knives and spoons and a cutting board and stuff and I'm falling asleep writing this part

"...Need any help?"

"I think I should be alright… But… if you want to," Lucian offered.

He didn't particularly need help, but he didn't want to risk making Akari feel worthless, or guilty, or anything of that sort. If he wanted to help, he wasn't going to stop him. Plus, Akari might interpret Lucian saying he really didn't need any help as a rejection.

. . .

After Kathy was… gone, he usually wound up doing things by himself. They used to do almost everything together. She was the only person he could trust, the only person who he could truly enjoy the company of. Back then…

Back in a world where he rarely knew of people who were truly kind, she was a treasure of the sea. And he… he missed her. He missed her so much. She did nothing to deserve what happened.

Lucian was so sick of violence and death. He just couldn't bring himself to become a medical practitioner for that reason, even though he had an interest in medicine. Kathy had always wanted to become a doctor, though.

…yet… she never got the chance. And that left even more of a bitter taste in his mouth about the whole idea. So… being a therapist… was alright.

You still saw so much suffering, in the sad eyes and tired faces… but… it was still better. Lucian wanted to help people, he just… he couldn't stand to see things like that again.

He always wanted to believe people could be better. And once he saw that they really could be, he didn't want to go back to the alternative.

Lucian Arbred knew how cruel the world could be. And yet, in a way, he ironically held something of a childlike, most innocent hope. That he could help others with his life, that it wasn't all a waste.

That was all he was important for. All he was supposed to mean. He…

He considered himself everyone's friend, in a way, but really, he was more so just everyone's therapist. Everyone's helper.

Because the idea of friends would mean he meant something. And Lucian didn't want to mean something. If he meant something when he passed on… people would be hurt. They would mourn.

He didn't want them to cry for him. And yet, so ironically, he wanted to make a difference. To make everyone's lives a little better, every day.

It hurt to care about others. It hurt to worry about them. And yet he did it anyway, because… he… couldn't be like that. He had to do better than them, everyone could be better than… that.

Yet he held no hatred in his heart for them, at least… mostly. After all, it was more a pitiful thing. When one is trapped inside of a life of great difficulty, of so much pain, suffering, and violence.

Then, the peace was shattered. Horatia's bisected corpse greeted them all inside a coffin. Those dead, dead eyes. And Kaoru, who he had believed in, and called a friend… she just hung there. So limp. So… fragile.

Futatabi and Mei, gone too, just like that. And Lucian was once again trapped in a hopeless situation he never wanted to be in again. It would be better to die, than to see others suffer, and to be unable to do anything to help.

Welcome back to the real world, Luke. Did you miss it?

🦋Darcy Harper's POV

"what the..." Darcy clapped his hands to his mouth. He hadn't been expecting to spot anything. Also, ow, he was getting a lot of splinters. But...

An entire floor underneath the school. It was... Well, not exactly unsurprising, but... What was down there? He wondered if he should dare look.

...

He looked over at Miyako and Shi, who were just caught up in their own world together. Kubo and Idris had run off. Who the hell knew where everybody else was?

Would he... Go alone?

...

He could bring Sawyer with him. They'd immediately be enthusiastic about this sort of thing. But probably unlikely to take it seriously. Still... It couldn't hurt, right?

Honestly. Big rule in those dumb poor-quality horror movies. Don't even think about it, Darcy Harper.

Creeeeak.

Darcy.

CREEEAK.

Okay, I guess we're doing this.

Taking a deep breath, Darcy steadied himself and...

-- fell right through the floor, forgetting there were no stairs or anything, and screaming like a five-year-old.

🦋Darcy Harper's POV💌

"Feeling like I'm always just barely there
Only a shadow, and it's never fair..."

There they were. Off in their own little world together, chattering on and on about some fairy tale ending. Floating off into their own paradise, while Darcy just watched. Completely... Irrelevant. Just off to the side. It felt all too sickeningly familiar. They gritted their teeth, and his fingers curled into fists.

"Fine," he muttered angrily to himself, not loudly enough to hear (not that those two would bother) fighting to keep the tears from his face. "I'll just look myself."

Darcy started peeking under the floorboards. Maybe there was something useful there? Was it too much to hope for?

Maybe it really was a dumb idea.

🦋Darcy Harper's POV💌

"I'll have you know that that is hardwood flooring and it is very expensive! I could buy and sell a child with that! If I peeled it up from the ground, I could actively become a dealer in the black market and seller of illegally imported cars. This is. A. Travesty."

Well... That was dramatic.

"Sorry sorry!~ Alright. I'll murder you later. For now, what do we want to do, besides mothers? More dinosaur nuggies? Or do we stop torturing Darcy and actually go do something productive? It's up to you, honestly."

"How about we go write self-insert fanfics? Red string of fate, get all romantic~!"

It was almost like he wasn't even there. Only Miyako's momentary mention of him reassured him he was still there. Darcy felt more like... A statue, than a person. Just...

Standing there... As those two lovebirds joked around, without a care in the world. In the middle of a Killing Game.

His idea was unheard. As he should have expected.

What else could he expect, really? But to be ignored.

And forgotten.

...

It made him want to vomit.

🦋Darcy Harper's POV💌

"AHHH!"

Darcy let out a sigh of relief as Miyako heeded the warning, and got out of the destructive creature's wake. Even more relieving, rather than it being some horrendous Goldilocksikuma, it was just Shi.

"Ah, sh*t! Sorry, Mi-mi, lost control."

She sure was fast. No wonder she had that talent. Still... She could have hurt somebody.

You better be sorry. Honestly, Shi-Shi, you're the worst."

Somehow, Darcy wasn't so sure she meant it. There was something... Affectionate about the sort of tease to Miyako's voice, that gripped at Darcy's heart, thorns of envy creeping in and poking him in the worst of places. There was this pang of emptiness, of lacking.

"We were going to search the school. For possible exits. Figure out how to leave this place... or if escape is even possible."

"Yeah." Darcy nodded. "We're uh... Definitely not sure it can be done, but, it couldn't hurt to try, I guess."

"Oh! Good luck, I can try to help but I've been around a lot of this place and haven't seen much. Then again, I also saw it all blurry for the most part so I could've missed something."

Well... That was unfortunate. "Good to know." He tried his best to keep the disappointment out of his tone.

"Oy, was that me? Damn, this place must've been cheap."

Darcy raised his eyebrows. "I know it sounds cliché, but... What if there is something hidden under some of these floorboards?" The thought randomly occurred to him, as Shi brought attention to it.

🦋Darcy Harper's POV💌

Miyako was whispering something to herself that Darcy couldn't quite make out. She still seemed noticeably distraught. Jeez. Was Buffkuma REALLY that mortifying?

"Do you know where Shi went?"

Shi? Oh, that girl that Miyako liked for some reason that Darcy scarcely knew. He was about to utter a response but only managed to open his mouth and point in warning at the golden ball hurtling towards them, not realizing that he had just answered the question right then.

Could this day get ANY weirder?

🦋Darcy Harper's POV💌

"Puhuhuhu~ if you insist."

Darcy clasped his hands together and closed his eyes. THANK YOU, God, for sparing us from that... Thing.

When he opened them, Miyako was still crying, a sight and sound that left him feeling distraught and feeling quite bad for the girl breaking down in front of him.

"I-Is it gone? Is it over? Are we safe?"

"It's gone... I think. But I wouldn't be surprised if that's not the last we'll see of... That thing." He wrinkled his nose as he said it.

When Miyako clung to him like that, he was quite taken aback. Had... She been that frightened? The thought deeply bothered him. Poor Miyako...

"Please... I beg of you... if it ever shows its face again... kill me. Put me out of my misery."

His eyes widened. "I-- I'm not going to just--" He sighed. "It's not going to come back, okay? That doesn't seem like the bear to use the same horrendous thing twice."

"Please. I would simply die."

He found himself hugging her, almost instinctively. "I-It's okay. I don't think it's coming back. Please... Don't say things like that. It's not going to come to that. Okay?"

At least... He hoped not. Seeing Miyako like this... Felt so strange, so unfamiliar. So this was the sort of thing she was afraid of.

Seeing her scared like this... It made her feel more human to him than ever before.

"It's okay," he insisted. "It won't come back."
