The shadows overwhelmed her. They creeped in, gripping at her throat, and tearing at her clothes, hissing and seething. Suzume gasped for air, she struggled to shout for help. Only tears came out. She reached for something, anything, just a breath of air--

The solution was right there --

She just needed to get to it ---

Out of her reach. Out of her reach...

But she managed, she managed to save her air.

For now...

She glared at Suko. "I know she didn't kill herself. Megami wouldn't have done that! I- could it have been an accident? Who could have orchestrated this? Who doesn't have an alibi?" The words came out strangely empty, as though all the motivation was choked out of her.

She looked over at Hisoka. "I don't... think Megami owned a switchblade." Breathe, Miss Fujimori. She took deep breaths, struggling to steady herself. You're a scientist. "But she might have. I don't see why, but she might have. Maybe for..." She froze, a moment, remembering.

"Maybe for self-defense purposes... but about her injuring her heel, she might have, I know nothing of that, though."

This was frustrating...

"Hisoka, Majikaruman, what were you doing at the time?" (I'll edit this out if the alibis have been presented earlier avava) "Suko? What were you doing? Buraddo? Nakata? Koda?" She hesitated... "Chuku?"

Suzume shook her head vigorously. "I WOULD NEVER KILL HER. And... couldn't either." She cleared her throat. "I-" She sighed.

"I understand your reasoning to suspect me... namely my knowledge of poisons. But I swear, I loved her, and I still do. I understand that it... it makes sense that I might've known things... about her, I-"

She couldn't do this. The words just kept sticking in her throat. She couldn't just coolly pour them out.

She's gone.

Suzume freaking teleported into the elevator by the power of biromantic angst because we need to get the plot moving.

She was staring down at the floor... she thought she heard Hisoka say something... did she imagine it?

"I can't believe she's really..." No. She couldn't dwell on that. "I think I might know who could've done this. But I'm not positive. I know she didn't kill herself, that's for sure."

Why? Why couldn't she stop dwelling on it? This was ridiculous.

It's just one more person dead. And then another one of us. We're all going to die anyway. We might as well just lose the trial on purpose at this point.

Yet, at the same time, she felt like she owed this. She owed this to Megami.

She had to find out who did it.

But why bother? Why bother with vengeance?

Well, it's a matter of numbers really. One death versus everyone's death.

Yeah. Just one more death.

It didn't matter who it was.

"You change quickly. So different from when you saw Koun's body! Got logical real fast. Great job, Suzu. I bet you can uncover her murder real fast too!" The note slowly dropped to the floor. Suzume went silent. She slowly walked over to the pills and began inspecting them obsessively. "Oh... pills. What chemicals are these?"

So that's what's going on with them, isn't it? She looked at Suko out of the corner of her eyes. Denial.

"Let's see," she muttered. "Math? Atbash? Cryptographic? No, I swear there was another code for this... These letters, each one must mean something different from what was originally written. Maybe it's scrambled. We'll have to consider every possible option."

"Live..." Was this... was this Megami's suicide note? Or someone pretending Megami was killing herself?

She wouldn't just kill herself. Suzume knew that.

"Pills... do they want us to assume that's the murder weapon? Her face... what is with it..."

She stifled her tears and clenched the note tightly. I'll solve this. I swear it.

Suzume forced herself to look in Suko's direction. "Oh... a note." Her eyes widened. "W-Wait... that's..."
She didn't know what Megami's handwriting looked like. But...
But...

"I think either... Megami wrote this, or the killer wanted us to believe Megami wrote this," she said quietly, wiping her tears with her ripped lab coat. Oh... Megami, I...

Why did she become close to her? Why did she do that?

If she hadn't let herself care about these people... she wouldn't be in this position.

SINCE WHEN DID SHE CARE?

NO. IT DIDN'T MATTER.

"It doesn't matter." An ice-cold, blank look came upon her face and she wiped her glasses. "Suko. Hand me that note."

Suzume sniffled. What... what was she doing? It didn't matter how she felt about this. She was being stupid, foolish. It's just another death. It's just another body zipped up in a body bag. Just another figure disappearing.

But well...

When she came along, everything became so different.
Slowly, she made her way into the Nurse's Office, and she caressed Megami's face.

"You were different, Nutmeg," she whispered. "You were different. I'm not used to people being kind to me. I'm not used to people... caring about me. I thought you were fake like the rest of them. But you were real. You were real. And I love you more than... more than any words can say. And I'll miss you, for as long as I live. I don't know if I... ever was loved before I met you. And I... I'll always... carry you with me..."

She let out a choking sob. "You were different, Megami. Very different indeed..."

I don't think I'll ever get over this. Not that long ago... you were just a face. Like all the others. You were nothing, and now you are everything.

"You were nothing... and now you are everything."

Suzume heard the announcement, and she thought her heart would stop. A body has been discovered. ...who was it? What was going on? Where?!

Then her eyes widened. Wait... could it be? No, it couldn't be... but she had to check.

She dropped Niwa and ran down the hall to the Nurse's Office. Please, let the body be somewhere else, don't let it be-

...what were Hisoka, Majikaruman, and Suko doing outside the office? Why were...

Long faded deep blue hair. Every follicle limp as can be. Delicate pale skin growing paler. And those... those eyes...

"No. NO. NO!! This isn't real. This isn't real. This isn't real. I-I-I- I must be... I must be hallucinating. She's just... resting... she's okay, she's breathing. It's okay! It's fine! She's... she's okay... Someone else is dead! They're dead! She's not dead. She can't be dead. She's not. She's..."

Tears bubbled in her eyes and came down as if pouring from a fountain. "She's not..."

Suzume almost vomited. She stared down, at Niwa, on the floor. She was shocked into stillness at first. "I warned you," she whispered. Wait, WHAT AM I DOING?!

Then, suddenly, her body moved practically on its own, rushing over and grabbing Niwa and running to the Nurse's Office. "HANG IN THERE!! It's okay... you'll be okay! You're fine, you're fine..."

Suzume slowly turned her head up and looked over at Hisoka. "R...Really?" No... it can't be safe. It wasn't even herself she was worried about. Her? Safe? It wasn't about her.

It was about them... it was about them and all their faces, twisted deep in anguish. All those people, all those souls...

No. She couldn't think about that. She took a deep breath and wiped her tears away. "Thank you. You're right, she isn't here." Her voice was cold and crystalline once again, as she stood up and wiped her glasses with her lab coat.

Suzume paled. "It was - an accident - I didn't mean to - I just wanted - to-" I just wanted to protect her. "You weren't there. You didn't... see that bear. How he acted towards her. I couldn't take it. I didn't mean to get us all punished. I wasn't thinking." The words flooded out of her like blood. Babblebabblebabble. Shaking, she turned to Niwa, gripping the sides of her head.

"Kowai... Kowai, she's here? She's here? In the kitchen? Of course... of course she's there. I have to go talk to her. I have to know why! Hahaha..." She fell into peals of delirious laughter, the tears pooling out of her eyes, her head tilted t'wards the ground.

Suzume sighed and rolled her eyes. "She seems highly unstable, Niwa, but I doubt she'd stab you in front of all of us. When you think about it, if she wasn't careful, she'd be asking for an instant execution."

She walked over to Hisoka with slightly narrowed eyes. "You mean, Maji can test this without equipment? And honestly, I highly doubt he'd kill any of us here with that. Because... well, it's the same as with Chuku. He'd be the first suspect if someone died of poisoning." Yet her eyes were twitching. "...never mind. I'd rather not risk it."

She glanced appreciatively at Suko. "I can't see what reason he might have for that..." She hesitated. "But I appreciate your concern."

What if... he does have reason for it though? She felt herself growing pale...

Suzume stared at her food in wonderment. "Should I... try this?" She pondered. "I bet Monokuma's lying. It wouldn't be above him to do that. Still, he'd probably prefer if the students murdered each other, so that seems out-of-character for him to poison any of this. Unless it's non-deadly poison."

Cautiously, she touched pieces of her food with her finger. She sniffed them. She put the slightest amount on her tongue. If only she had some equipment...

"Maybe I should wait to eat until later." She glanced over at Megami.
