"Stupid Winged Creature." Alaire scowled, hurt. "Thank you," AC said to Miyasaki. "Running from-? No, I'm not running! It's just a shitty name. Like worse than air conditioning. It was ugly, so I left it behind." She crossed her arms, watching Alaire curiously. For a moment, she had wanted to explain everything to Seraphina. But that was... stupid. [Read more] |

She knew him better than she knew herself, could see the worry between his eyebrows, the stiffness in his shoulder. Alaire was in tune with every subtle shift of his emotions. They fit, perfectly, achingly. Sometimes, she hated it. Other times, it was all she could do not to pull him close and hold him in her arms. If she could save him, would he want that? He always complained about he was so, so tired. Maybe it would end if they reached the top. But neither of them had ever even seen the final floor. Alaire sighed melodramatically, putting her thoughts in order. "Believe me, chit." She said, turning back to the blue haired gremlin. "I've tried. No matter how hard I yank, the stick isn't budging." Alaire smiled flirtatiously towards no one in particular. "Seraphina is new, and doesn't have our knowledge. As for Chizu... I may know them, but not by that name. I know, well, a lot of people I shouldn't." She had long confessed to herself she enjoyed being at the center of interesting things. Alaire was like the sun, pulling everything into her orbit, and bathing it in warmth and light. Miyasaki used to call her that, back when he remembered. She missed the early days. AC blinked twice, the rapid motion shocking her. "Listen here, angel bitch. You are the last person to comment on someone's appearance. I'm a whole head taller than you, and it isn't even funny. My name is AC, two letters, nice and simple. Don't wear it out. And please just shut up, because if I hear you speak again, it will be all too soon." She looked back up at Seraphina, a softer smile on her face. "It's not- I mean, I wasn't born with the name. But it fits better, y'know?" Oh sure, that was smooth. Better. What a stupid choice of words. She forced herself to take her hands out her pockets, unclenching her fists from around her knives. Seraphina was so... happy. AC wanted to know why, to ask her why she smiled, to ask her what she was running from. We can run away together... she thought, before squashing the thought. Oh god, had she been quiet too long? Was it awkward yet? "Um, yeah." She nodded, punctuating the statement with a nod. Er, Mr. Regressor, Miyasaki. You said this was like a game. What's next?" [Read more] |

Alaire reached up, her hand cupping his cheek. "You look like absolute shit, and I've told you a thousand times that black isn't your color. Dark grey is far more subtle, anyway. But no matter. You're here. Although I confess that I didn't imagine to see you with others this soon." She was torn between wanting to kill him and kiss him, so nothing else was new. "Thoughts for this time? Try for the top? Build a civilization? Piss off the main characters and get our asses hand to us?" Her lips twitched as she remembered the situations Miyasaki's obsession with Artemis and Emma had gotten them into. Strung up by her ankles for pterodactyls to eat, literally thrown to a certain god of wolves, throat slit more times than she could count... her powers were useless on them once they started making kissy faces at each other. She glanced at the other people he was surrounded by. The brunette looked perceptive enough, yet Alaire could tell she had a temper. She was currently spluttering at something the even shorter other one had singsonged at her. The blue-haired girl was an imp, destined to cause trouble. The third was blood-stained, and looked disgusted with herself. Aw. She'd grow out of it quickly. Or she'd die. Openly squinting at them, she tried to place their faces. The brown-haired girl made it far, she knew that... no, all three of them did. Mudslinger was the word that came to mind. The brunette...? Yes. It was a start. She'd follow that train of thought when she had time. A mudslinger, an imp, and a witch. How lovely. AC's mouth dropped open furiously. "Excuse me?" Her knives were in her hands instantaneously. "What the actual hell is that supposed to mean?" She saw it useless to point out that there were no closets in this room. None for miles probably. She wanted to punch that stupid smile. The girl was short, which meant she was probably light, which meant AC could dropkick her. That sounded amazing right about now. AC physically turned away from her, hiding the blue-headed gremlin from her line of sight. They knew him. Or at least the older one did. She watched her, Alaire, as she approached Miyasaki. They were... close. She could tell, watching her effortlessly invade his personal space, contentment under her facade. Alaire was the first person AC had really seen who was at ease around him. And she was seriously hot. Off-limits obviously, but one could only wonder. The other girl was... AC swallowed, her mouth suddenly dry. She was beautiful in that effortless way girls were, simultaneously intimidating and attractive. Faded purple hair, an oversized hoodie, a scar on her cheek AC had the strangest urge to run a hand over... And she held a blade. But AC could tell that she seemed unsure, which made her all the more endearing and approachable. AC found herself drawn to the stranger, no, Seraphina, and involuntarily took a step forward. "Hi. I'm AC." The words felt foreign in her mouth, even though it was her own name. Alaire pulled back from Miyasaki, turning to her. AC could feel her assessing stare, and tried to pull herself up to her full height. In her pockets, her palms gripped the knives nervously. "AC? Like air-conditioning?" She asked, wrinkling her nose. "No, like Actinium," she muttered darkly. Her lame chemistry joke was met with the ghost of a smile on Alaire's face. "How curious." Alaire said nothing more. AC met Seraphina's green eyes, and any scornful words she had about dumb and dumber behind her died in her throat. She tried to shut down her mind as it betrayed her. Oh god, she was toast. AC crushed hard, and AC crushed stupid. Not once had she ever been right, not once had her heart led her true. No matter how hard she tried to label it as a stupid fricking neurochemical reaction, she couldn't help but wonder at Seraphina's strong arms and soft hair and- She looked away with an awkward nod, trying not to weird her out. She needed to get a grip before she became tongue-tied. She was smart, and as long as she stayed smart, they would all be oblivious, because AC was a master of hiding said idiotic crushes. Only a few seconds had passed, (though it felt like so much longer). AC swallowed again, staring at the ground. [Read more] |

"As for who I am..." she sighed, giving at Seraphina her undivided attention for the first time. "I'm Alaire. I am... well, a veteran of this tower. I've lived hundreds of lifetimes here. After a while, you learn what to expect. Now come. We're going to join a-" she paused. "-a friend of mine so we don't die. I've known him literally forever." She turned, wading through the mess towards Miyasaki. "Oh, and little moth? So long as you stay with me, I won't let you die. That's a promise I will carry out to the best of my unearthly abilities." "Will you two shut up?" AC groaned, covering her ears, annoyed. "There will be no stupid meat shields and no idiocy." "You, angel bitch, will kindly shut the hell up. Your voice is at an absolutely maddening pitch. So... squeaky. And you," she pointed at the guy, "Your main characters in ink and blue are over there." She pointed to the other side of the cavern, nearly a quarter mile away. She didn't know how she knew who he was talking about, but that was them. She was sure of it. A young man with long, blue hair fought next to a shorter girl with shoulder length hair the color of bubble gum. Even from here, she could see their chemistry. AC turned back to her companions after staring unabashedly at them for a moment. The man was staring off into space again, trying to ignore the yammering of their companion. Until AC saw movement. "Ohmygod. Mr. Regressor? The purple people are coming towards us." And sure enough, the elegant one was soaring through the mess, parting the waves of creatures like the red sea. She had a hard-to-read expression on her face... it looked like a smile, it seemed like a smile, but it did not feel like a smile. [Read more] |

Alaire wasn't even sure if she was going to push on this time. She could set up her lab in her usual spot and research. The idea was alluring. AC she brushed her hands off, trying to rid them of matted fur and blood, the wolf red and goblin green mixing together. "What do they look like, oh mysterious stranger?" More people the emo kid knew. She hated his reticence. [Read more] |

But Seraphina needed to be at the forefront of his mind. "Your inherent ability is quite useful, little moth. Deflect and reflect..." she laughed, watching goblin after goblin after wolf after goblin fall around them. "Mine... well, I have to rely on wits-" she lifted a wolf, tossing it into three others, "-alone in combat." [Read more] |

The moth was bloodthirsty. What an interesting development. In contrast to the rest of the humans, she had no fear, slashing and stabbing without abandon and throwing her whole self into the fray. She might be a useful ally. AC kept one eye on the emo kid, shifting imperceptibly to avoid him in battle. So when he straightened up, she saw it, following his gaze to a pair of purple haired women killing... killing like him. One seemed more restrained than the other, artistry compared to mania. Who were they? Regressors, whatever a regressor was? She had a feeling she'd find out. It could be worse. She could have not met the emo kid and been brutally slaughtered by him within the first five minutes. AC had certainly been in his radius... That was yesterday's problem. She was fine. [Read more] |

[Level Up!] AC shrugged. Well she had already killed one thing, and killing things seemed to help her stats...? She stabbed another goblin that lunged. Her aim was slightly off, and instead of catching it in the chest like her brain had planned it, the strike was a glancing blow to the ribs. AC scowled, kicking it, and stuck a knife in its head. Two-handed combat was actually really hard. She had to manage two limbs instead of just her dominant hand, both of which had stabby blades of death attached to the ends of them. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw movement. What was the emo kid doing (aside from killing humans)? She was staying out of his range... He was interacting with the shop. She pulled up the translucent screen, watching it as she defeated a third goblin. Her balance went from ten gold to fifteen as the creature died. So it was like... a video game? Kill mobs and defeat hordes for gold and experience? There were so many skills to lean and gear to buy... she had no idea where to start. If this was video game based, it was best to draw from her own experiences. AC had always been the control spot... never attacking on the front lines, but not quite a sissy healer. Ranged attacks and AoE attacks were her forte, with maybe a minor healing spell on most of her characters as a backup. It was the role she knew best. But she needed teammates. Crap. Goblins were easy targets, and before she knew it, AC had a decent pile of five or six corpses around her. It was best to think of them as mindless spawns of the tower. If she tried to contemplate the possibility of a goblin nation right now, she would have to face the fact that she was killing creatures that just wanted to live. Evil attacks, and good defends... she thought, a line from one of her favorite books. Thems were the rules. She didn't make them, only followed them. [Read more] |

A man with an axe ran at them, and she sliced off his arm. He fell to his knees, howling, and a stab put him out of his misery. [You have unlocked the [PLAYER STORE]!] [Congratulations, you are the second person to unlock the store!] [Regressor's perk! You have obtained 140,000 coins] "The people," another stab into the horde, "are the real problem." She swung into action with another flurry of slices. Alaire was swift and efficient, her effortless fighting a blur. "They come in waves trying to smell weakness. And you can't progress without killing... something." AC swallowed, the press of people transforming to panic. Hands in her pockets, she clutched her twin knives, hesitating on using them. Blood and gore surrounded her and she felt... strangely calm. Sure, the stench made her stomach turn, but her mind was clear. And the regressor was killing people, so it seemed necessary. Could she... do this? AC didn't have time to ask as a goblin ran at her. She reached out instinctively to stop it, knife in hand. It impaled itself on her knife. She was horrified as she watched it die. No. She was supposed to be horrified, and the emotion was on the edge of her subconscious. But in actuality, AC was strangely detached, curious at the creature's dark green blood. She had caused that. [You have unlocked the [PLAYER STORE]!] [Congratulations, you are the twenty-third person to unlock the store!] [Your balance is: 0 gold.] [Read more] |

She closed the window as quickly as she pulled it up, seeing exactly what she expected it to see. Her gold quantity wouldn't load until she dispatched her first enemy. Seeing her companion successfully navigate her own window, Alaire nodded once. "Call upon it when you need to see it. It's always there. Lurking out of sight insidiously, of course." She smiled a not-so-reassuring smile, her focus back on the ridiculous winged creature. Thankfully no one could see her god-awful name. Could she set the name? Did AC even care? A barcode was decent enough. Her cloak was already loaded into her inventory it seemed. [Read more] |

[The Key of Hermes(?)] [Must be combined with a lock to provide any effect. Obviously.] She snorted. The subtext of the key changed every incarnation, yet the sarcasm remained the same. "Hm? Oh, I think that's a life-force draining blade. Check the subtext. Hold it up and concentrate on it, and you'll see. That's your random starting weapon." AC held the die in her hand, holding it up to the light from the angel-thing. Dozens of numbers lined the shape. Shrugging, she rolled it in her palm. Immediately, she found herself shrouded in something green and shimmering. [Green Cloak(?)] [Contains a pair of poisonous knives that return to the pockets] AC pulled the hood off her head. Reaching a hand in to the pockets, she felt her palms grip a pair of sturdy knives, just as the mysterious description said she would. [Read more] |

"I swear. You don't owe me any life debt, nothing. Please go with him." Again, it shook its head. "Stupid..." she grumbled. Despite the complications, Dee's flippant demeanor took over as she agreed, "But hey, for all intensive purposes, Roo, you're in charge of this bug now. You can be the bug whisperer, feed it, and do whatever it is bugs need. Just don't expect it to fetch your slippers or anything." With a shrug, she handed over the accidental responsibility, seemingly indifferent but secretly pleased to have someone else deal with the quirky scarab that had unwillingly become a part of their group. She tossed the blade to her other hand, making room in her preciously hard-won little bubble of space. "Like me, or love me, or trust me, or not, you'll see I'm... right." And that was the most important part. But Alaire knew she was enchanting enough to make the other three true to nearly anyone. AC froze, her head snapping up to look at the angel thing. She'd try again later. The catty angel-girl and the emo sorcerer also appeared to stop what they were doing. Scowling, she brushed a fleck of blood from the exploded head off of her shoulder. Turning back to the man in black... well, really he couldn't be much older than her. On second glance, if you ignored his eyes, he appeared to be barely twenty. "Care to share your infinite wisdom, regressor?" He'd used the word. It was a complete stab in the dark, but AC knew what words to say to get a rise out of people. She kept files on everyone she knew, tucked in the recesses of her brain, containing exactly what words to say to reduce them to nothing. She never said those words... but she just knew them. They occurred to her as naturally as breathing, devastatingly simple to figure out and capture. And if AC never said them, she was always in control. "Am I talking to you? Well that depends. Did you hear me? Do you think the words relate to your current plight?" Alaire seemed honestly curious. Disassociation after thousands of years wasn't uncommon. She wondered if it was a precursor to the terrifyingly real memory loss her compatriot seemed to be experiencing. She lifted her blade a little higher, marveling at the winged one's white light refracting of the surface. Small miracles were always present in the godforsaken tower. The big miracles... well, she had never managed to escape in her hundreds of lifetimes after she was summoned here. Perhaps big miracles didn't exist. [Read more] |
